Halfdan 'Kvitsrk (Whit-shirt) Ragnarsson was vry influntial in Northumbria and brifly th Viking King in York. H thn trid to prss his claim on th Kingdom of Dublin whr h was slain in

18 as Ivar travld back to Irland, whr h did two yars latr. Halfdan Ragnarsson, calld Halfdan Kvitsrk (Whit-shirt) and by lgnd Ivar th Bonlss s brothr, bgan lading th Host. Indd, th rcord shows that two kings, Bagsac and Halfdn (Halfdan), ld th Hathn Army to Rading in Wssx whr thy dfatd th Wst-Saxon King in 871. Th Vikings attackd and wr dfatd at Ashdown. Thousands of mn wr slain and King Bagsac fll. Now in full command, King Halfdan pushd his army on th offnsiv and again confrontd th English at Basing only 1 days aftr th Viking loss at Ashdown, dfating th English. Halfdan rorganizd his armis and marchd to Mardn two months aftr. Again, th Norsmn wr victorious and mor than that, thy rcivd many rinforcmnts from ovrsas. For th English, this was a trribl blow, for not only had thy lost many mn and lands, but thir King Æthlrd of Wssx as wll. With King Æthlrd s dath, his youngr brothr ascndd to th thron of Wssx and now finally w s King Alfrd, latr calld th Grat, com full forc into history. His first battl as king at Wilton ndd in dfat, but h was abl to mak pac with th Vikings. Most likly it involvd paying thm tribut in what would b known as Dangld. This may hav bn th first sign of a nw stratgy involving bribry to gain pac and tim to rbuild and rorganiz th English forcs. For now at last, it workd. Halfdan s army turnd its lust for plundr towards th Mrcians and th Northumbrians for th following 6 yars, laving Wssx to itslf. Th kingdoms of Northumbria and Mrcia wr ovrrun and an English Thgn (rtainr), Colwulf II, was placd undr Nors control in Mrcia. Prhaps Halfdan was contnt with th conqust, or was ndd furthr north? In any cas, h took a part of th army and subdud th rst of Northumbria and dividd land among his mn and followrs. Ivar was dad, but his lgacy was not, so Halfdan saild to Irland and fought with th nativs and othr Vikings to achiv Ivar s claims in Irland. As Halfdan movd north in 875, thr othr Viking kings mrgd as ladrs of th Grat Hathn Army. Th main king mntiond in th Anglo-Saxon Chronicls is Guthrum, who most likly arrivd in 871 with th rinforcmnts to join Halfdan in East Anglia. Th following yar, Guthrum invadd Wssx, continually bating Alfrd s armis in a string of battls. Guthrum and his host rod with thir cavalry to conqur Extr, forcing Alfrd to mak a pac traty which rsultd in th Vikings laving Wssx to wintr in Gloucstr. By 878, Guthrum had stablishd himslf in East Anglia and ld a surpris attack against Alfrd, narly capturing him. Th King fld into th marshs of Somrst, barly scaping th assault. Dfatd and without an Army, th King Ivar th Bonlss Ragnarsson Son of Ragnar and th völva (shaman) Aslaug. As a rsult of a curs, h was supposdly born bonlss but still h bcam a mighty Viking ladr, cunning, and tactically adpt. In battl, h was carrid by his warriors on a shild and usd his bow on his nmis. H latr turnd his attntion wst and was th co-rulr of th Kingdom of Dublin, until his dath in 87. Ubb Ragnarsson Possibly a bastard son of Ragnar, Ubb is likly on of th ladrs of th Grat Hathn Army and was rumord to go brsrk in battl. Guthrum On of th ladrs of th Grat Hathn Army and latr th King of Danlaw. This was a larg part of middl and northastrn England that was run undr th laws of th Dans, which includd Essx, Middl Anglia, Lindsy, Dira, Cumbria, and mor. H is th principal signatory to th traty of Wdmor whr h and King Alfrd th Grat stablishd pac and bordrs for th Danlaw. H was vntually christnd by Alfrd and took th nam Æthlstan. 17

19 prsuadd local lords in Somrstshir, Wiltshir, and parts of Hampshir to support him with mn. With this forc, th King fought Guthrum at th Battl of Ethandun. Guthrum s Viking Army was routd with Alfrd s army in pursuit. Th Vikings built a dirt and wood fortrss to dfnd thmslvs. Th English surroundd thm and bsigd th woundd, tird, hungry and thirsty Vikings for 1 days, until thy finally surrndrd. Guthrum and Alfrd ngotiatd a pac traty calld Th Traty of Wdmor. Guthrum swor that h would lav Wssx and th English took hostags to sal th dal. This tim, th Norsmn hld tru to thir words and rtratd to Chippnham. Mor than that, Guthrum was baptizd at Wdmor, with King Alfrd as sponsor and godfathr. H took th Christian nam Æthlstan. Guthrum s host rtratd into East Anglia and dividd lands among thmslvs. Th Traty of Wdmor is prsrvd to this day. Th dat is uncrtain, but th traty is prsumd to hav takn plac in 878 whn Guthrum was baptisd by King Alfrd in Wdmor. This was a turning point for Wssx, as th traty dfind th bordrs btwn th Danlaw and th Kingdom of Wssx. Much of th traty dtails compnsation pay in cas of manslaughtr btwn th sids, forbad Wssx mn from joining th Viking Army and vic vrsa, and outlind pacful trad practics btwn th kingdoms. Th Vikings thn turnd thir attntion to Franc, raiding its coasts for th following fiv yars. Whn thy rturnd, Alfrd was wll prpard for thir dcit, dfating th Norsmn in dcisiv land and sa battls. Th Aftrmath Th Norsmn continud thir raids and attacks against England for th nxt 150 yars, vntually ruling all of England from 101/1016 until 10. Th Viking ag finally ndd in 1066 whn th Norwgian King Harald Hardrada was dfatd by th Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson at Stamford Bridg. King Harold was thn dfatd and killd wks latr by William th Conquror, Duk of Normandy (himslf a dirct dscndant of th Viking King Rollo, foundr of Normandy). William would invad England, dfat th English at Hastings in 1066, and bcom th first Norman King of England. Who wr th Vikings? Vikings was a nam givn to safaring Norsmn (Northmn) that invadd England from th Scandinavian lands now known as Norway, Swdn, and Dnmark. In Old Nors, viking mant frbooting or looting voyag and on would go on a viking. Th Vikings did not hav a sns of nationality, rathr thir allgianc was to thir kind (rlativs and frinds) and to th lord thy srvd (oftn titld King). Why did thy invad England? It is hard to say, but som Lagrtha Mmbr of th Norwgian King Siward s court, sh was placd in a brothl as humiliation whn th King was killd. Whn Ragnar Lodbrok cam to avng th dath of King Siward, Lagrtha is said to hav hlpd in turning th tid of battl, fighting as a shildmaidn. Sh caught Ragnar s y bcaus of hr bravry and battl skills and sh bcam his wif soon aftr. Rollo Rollo th Walkr (Hrólfr th Walkr), was namd as such bcaus h was so big that no hors could carry him. H was ithr a Norwgian or Danish Viking that vntually invadd what would latr b calld Normandy (Northmn) in Franc. H bcam th rulr of Normandy and is th ancstor of William th Conquror, latr King of England. Alfrd th Grat King of Wssx and fathr of England. H is most likly th sol rason why th Vikings did not conqur th whol of England at this tim. King Alfrd fought whn h had to and ngotiatd pac whn h could, vntually driving th Vikings back and forcing thm to sign th Traty of Wdmor. King Alfrd th Grat was th first to call himslf 'King of th Anglo-Saxons. 18

20 crtainly travlld ovrsas to gathr richs in ordr to mount claims to land or titl back hom. King Harald Hardrada is on such xampl. Many rcords in th Nors Sagas dscrib battls btwn rturning Viking armis and th locals, so thy may not hav always bn a wlcom sight for th rulrs back hom. Surprisingly, archological findings support th hypothsis that most Vikings did not rturn hom and actually stayd and sttld abroad. Th Anglo-Saxon Chronicls documnt whr th Viking raids volvd from sasonal vnts to a yar-round prsnc as th Grat Hathn Army vntually stayd in England. This indicats that th Norsmn s motivs volvd from sking silvr and slavs to sttling th land. This also mad thm mor difficult to dfat, as thy now would b fighting for thir hom and familis, instad of risking thir livs for richs. Brsrkrs In th Sagas, thr ar svral rfrncs to a spcial brd of mn. Ths mn wr blivd to draw powrs from th skin of th animal thy wor and had th ability to go into battl-rag, at which point nithr iron nor fir could harm thm. This battl frnzy was calld brsrkrgang and th warriors wr th brsrkrs. Th nam likly coms from bar-srk, which mans bar-shirt, rfrring to th barhid thy allgdly wor. Today som bliv that thy blongd to a spcial cult of warriors dvoting thir lif and srvic to thir god Odin. Although not ntirly unlikly, th vidnc in favor of this viw is far from conclusiv. Storis dscrib that th brsrkrs would work thmslvs into a battl-rag, killing all that cam into thir path, mn and basts alik. Aftr th battl, thy would bcom wak and fbl. Hypothss about this frnzy involv havy drinking, slf-hypnosis, and consumption of th hallucinognic mushroom Rd Fly Agaric. Th migration of th Norsmn to England gratly influncd its cultur, languag, and popl. Evn today w can asily s signs of th Viking influnc in nams of locations, words in th English languag, and in th DNA of England s population.
