You will rcall that h has bn to Nob and to Gath, and his bhavior and choics wr lss than xmplary. In I Sam. 22, w will s th rsult of David s dishonsty with th prists in Nob. Howvr, prior to this, David has gon from bing frightnd, dirctionlss and out of fllowship, to bing a ladr, wis and in fllowship. In th book of Samul, this is mrly implid; howvr, David has clarly spiritually rboundd in Psalm 56, which clansing has ld to his writing svral psalms and lading a small army. If on rads I Sam. 21 and 22 carfully, it will mak David sm schizophrnic. In chaptr 21, h is on th run, h is afraid, h maks stupid choics, h lis, h producs phony bhavior, and h is worrid about on prson and on prson only: himslf. In chaptr 22, on th othr hand, w hav David as a ladr. Mn hav flockd to him; his family has com to him. David is not worrid for his own safty now, but for th safty of othrs. David now xuds confidnc and ladrship and faith. Th ky, of cours, is Psalm 56, whr David turns towa God. Satan s stratgy for th blivr is for th blivr to focus on himslf, on othr popl or on th circumstancs of lif. David had bn focusd on himslf and on his problms. In Psalm 56, this focus turnd towa God. Psalm 57 marks th 3 in a sris of psalms which dmonstrat David s spiritual focus, strngth and growth. H wrot at last a half dozn psalms during this priod of tim. I should mntion that David spnt a lot of tim in cavs; in fact, this will b his modus oprandi for th nxt svral yars. Thrfor, although I hav placd this psalm at th bginning of I Sam. 22, it could hav occur at anytim btwn I Sam W may mak th gnral obsrvation, basd upon our study of th prvious two psalms (Psalm 34 56), that David dos not simply randomly throw wos togthr until h runs out of stam. His psalms oftn hav a structur, and th structur is oftn ky to undrstanding th psalm. First of all, w hav a chorus, vv. 5 and 11 (which ar idntical). W hav th vocativ for God found in vv. 1, 5, 7, and 11. David mntions th havns in vv. 3, 5, 10, and 11. Finally, h spaks of grac and truth (of faithfulnss) in vv. 3 and 10. I was unabl to dciphr a pattrn; howvr, Kil and Dlitzsch obsrvd a stroph-schma of 4.5.6;4.5.6, which schma both givs us

In ralizing that his lif was in dangr and that thr was no prson that h could turn to, David turns to God, and prays for his dlivranc. As a part of his prayr, David rcognizs that God can b trustd to com through for him (vv. 2b 3). Thn h praiss God for this dlivranc (ths hadings will b addd to th stroph-schma of 4.5.6;4.5.6 found at th nd of this psalm). David first spaks of asking God to b gracious to him, and thn rvals his complt dpndnc upon God (vv. 1 2). H knows that God will protct him (v. 3), vn though his lif is in dangr (v. 4). In v. 5, w hav th chorus of this psalm, whr David calls for God to b hono in th havns and that His glory b ovr all th arth, which is not unlik, Your will b don, on arth as it is in havn (v. 5). In v. 6, David again spaks of th dangrs of his lif, but that thos out to trap him, trap thmslvs. Vv ar clbratory vrss, whr David spaks of bing occupid with th prson of God and h clbrats God s grac among all popls (which introducs us to som fairly difficult txtual criticism). Finally, David nds with th chorus again. W hav a lot of thms in this psalm which ar parallld lswhr. Whn w com to ths parallls, thy will b duly notd. In rviwing th psalm, apart from th inscription (or titl), I would hav to agr that this could vry asily b a psalm of Jsus, spokn from His humanity. Translation: To th Prminnt On:... Th first noun in this inscription is an intrsting on, and has bn givn many diffrnt rndrings: choir dirctor, choirmastr, music ladr, ladr, chif musician. Howvr, insofar as w know, thr was no official choir or palac orchstra. In fact, to gt any sort of music at all in th palac, David was snt for, a lon guitarist. Givn th music-thrapy which Saul s staff rcommndd (I Sam. 16:14 19), and givn that Saul prtty much actd lik a madman for th nxt dcad or so, w can rasonably assum that, whn ths vnts took plac that ar mntiond in th rmaindr of this inscription, that Saul nvr organizd any sort of in-hous music aftr David bcam a fugitiv. His cabint prhaps organizd additional music thrapy for him. Howvr, vn if that wr th cas, David, whil on th run from Saul, would hav no rason to writ somthing for th ladr of that musical group. Thrfor, thr is no rason to intrprt th Pil participl of nâtsach as 3 nd choirmastr, choir ladr, or choir-anything. 4 Psalm 57 4 on is Saul. This psalm is addrssd to him. Saul, plas, do not dstroy m! You may ask, why didn t David just put Saul s nam in hr instad? H did, in th inscription, a coupl of wos down. Anothr intrprtation is that ths wr givn to a choirmastr or music ladr long aftr th incidnt and long aftr thy wr writtn. Whn w studid Psalm 34, thr wr things in th inscription which suggstd that thr was a priod of tim btwn th writing of th psalm and th writing of th inscription (which dos not ncssarily conflict with th concpt of Scriptur bing inspi of God). David did organiz a choir and orchstra onc h bcam king (I Chron. 25), so h possibly gath his psalms, put titls to thm, and took thm to th choirmastr at that tim. This would not, howvr, xplain why som psalms wr writtn for th choirmastr and why som wr not. Anothr, and bttr, intrprtation is that th Prminnt On could b a rfrnc to God, and David prays to God that his nmis not b allowd to dstroy him. Sinc God can ovrrul man s volition, David can addrss God dirctly, and ask for Him not to dstroy him. This is mor rasonabl that this psalm is addrssd to God, as w hav th vocativ Elohim in vv. 1 2, 5, 7, 11. Psalms bgin xactly in th sam way, both bing addrssd to th Prminnt On and both carrying th pla Do not dstroy! Both psalms ar also attributd to David and Psalm 57 also spaks of a tim whn David fld from Saul. It would b rasonabl to plac th writing of all thr of ths psalms during th tim that David was a fugitiv in Isral. Also, sinc David is functioning on divin viwpoint, rathr than human viwpoint, w would xpct him to addrss God in this mattr, rathr than Saul (who would nvr actually har this psalm anyway). Psalm 75 bgins idntically, but is attributd to Asaph. A jussiv 4 xprsss th spakr s dsir, wish or command. Translation: Do not dstroy [m]! As mntiond abov, it is most likly that David is addrssing God as th Prminnt On and asking God not to dstroy him. W would xpct David, whn in fllowship, to rcogniz that God is th On in charg and God allows or disallows his dstruction. W find almost th xact sam morphology in I Sam. 26:9, whn David tlls Abishai not to dstroy Saul (thr is a suffix in this passag, which is not found in our psalm). S also Dut. 9:26, whr Moss prays for God not to dstroy th Jwish popl. This sam translation is found in both th Grk and Latin manuscripts, and th mor common xplanation is that 5 this is st to th music of a wll-known song or psalm of that ra, calld Do Not Dstroy. I rjct this xplanation for thr rasons: (1) Why st 4 psalms to th xact sam tun? I would think that thr would b problms with mtr and vrs lngth. (2) Th xplanation givn asily xplains this phras occurring at th bginning of ths 4 psalms. (3) That David is asking not to b dstroyd (or asking for Isral not to b dstroyd) is apropos to th tnor and subjct mattr of ths psalms. Th diffrnc btwn th nouns is th final lttr. Givn thir strong similaritis, I would rasonably suppos that mik tâm mans writing, a pom, a song. This wo is found only in th inscriptions of 6 psalms (all psalms of David) and giving it such a maning dos no damag to th psalms or th inscription. Intrstingly nough, a wo which is also similar to mik tâm is kâtham (í ú - È ) [pronouncd kaw-thahm], which mans to b staind; bloodstaind; dfild. Strong s #3799 BDB #508. Many tims, a vrb is mad into a substantiv by affixing a mm to th bginning of th wo. Translation: A writing of David s... Although many translations translitrat th wo mikhtam, thr is rally no rason for that. W may rasonably undrstand this to man a writing, a pom or a song of David s. W find this sam dsignation in Psalms 16, (s th xgsis abov for a full xplanation). W may rasonably assum that David is simply putting his signatur to this psalm. It is also possibl that, as has bn mntiond bfor, this was don long aftr th psalm was writtn. David was on th lamb for svral yars aftr this, and w might suppos that h has stayd in many cavs. Howvr, thr ar only two cavs which ar spcifically mntiond in connction with David and this tim priod, and that is th cav of Adullam in I Sam. 22:1 (our passag) and th cav whr David cut Saul s garmnt whn h was dfcating (I Sam. 24). Givn that David was not fling from Saul, pr s, in I Sam. 24, w may 7 rasonably assum that this blongs with our passag, Psalm 22. On th othr hand, David spaks in v. 6 of his nmis digging a pit, and thn falling into it. This could dscrib th situation prsntd to us in I Sam. 24, whr Saul wandrs into David s cav of hiding in or to dfcat. This would b in agrmnt with v. 6 and it is th rason many xgts plac this psalm with I Sam. 24. Lt m offr you a thi possibility: David, with his 400+ mn, will spnd a lot of tim in cavs. Thr ar a lot of mn to hid, and th only saf plac for thm to hid would b in a cav, which is whr thy hid at last twic (I Sam. 22:1 24:3 4). Thr is no rason to think that ths ar th only two cavs whr David and his mn 7 Obviously, it is possibl that this rfrs to a cav which is not mntiond in Scriptur.

From Spurgon s Trasury of David: Th cav. Thr appar good grounds for th local tradition which fixs th cav on th bors of th Dad Sa, although thr is no crtainty with rga to th particular cav pointd out. Th cav so dsignatd is at a point to which David was far mor likly to summon his parnts, whom h intndd to tak from Bthlhm into Moab, than to any plac in th wstrn plains... It is an immns natural cavrn, th mouth of which can b approachd only on foot along th sid of th cliff. Irby and Mangls, who visitd it without bing awar that is was th rputd Cav of Adullam, stat that it runs in by a long winding, narrow passag, with small chambrs or cavitis on ithr sid. Application: no mattr how you hav faild; no mattr how faithlss you hav bn, you can always go to God and ask Him for grac. God givs His grac on th basis of what Jsus did for us on th cross not on th basis of our own pitiful livs and multifarious failurs.
