Charts and Maps Introduction Various Outlins for Psalm 104 Introduction Altrnat Outlin of Chaptr 104 Introduction: It is difficult to know whr to plac Psalm 104 in trms of whr it should taught. Th matrial covrd dals, in part, with th cration of th arth and th trmndous powr of God; thrfor, it longs soon aftr th first coupl of chaptrs of Gnsis. Howvr, this psalm appars to part of a quadruplt of psalms, proaly all writtn y David, Psalms Psalm 103 dals with th charactr of God and is undisputaly David s work, and thrfor should taught somtim during th taching of his lif. Howvr, Psalm 104 cntrs on cration, whras Psalms dal with th history of Isral up to th tim of Moss and slightly yond. In this Psalm Addndum, I will kp this in th sam ordr as it is found in th Psalms, ut I will tach Psalm 104 aftr chaptr 2 of Gnsis. As was mntiond, this psalm was likly writtn y David. Th first of ths quadruplt of psalms lists David as th author. Psalm 103 is nclosd y th words Blss Y howah, O my soul; and so is Psalm 104. I don t think that this is mrly a similarity of styls of two sparat psalmists, ut a dvic to connct ths two psalms to on anothr. In fact, it is proaly mor difficult to ti Psalms 104 and 105 togthr than it is to ti this psalm and th

Aftr giving my opinion that this was a psalm of David, I found that Barns Nots wrot: This psalm in th Syriac, th araic, th Grk and th Latin vrsions, is ascrid to David, ut on what authority 1 is now unknown. In th Hrw, it has no titl. So that you know thr ar othr viws, th NIV Study Bil xprsss th thought that th first lin and th last two lins of this psalm wr addd y a latr ditor. My guss is that thir justification is that ths thr lins ar not an intgral whol with th rst of th psalm, and thrfor must hav n addd. I prsonally think that this framing was don y David to idntify this quadruplt of psalms as his. W do not know th occasion of this psalm i.., why or whn it was writtn. As Barns points out, thr is no tim priod to which it must affixd (othr than David s) and it would not inappropriat at any givn crmony or clration. It is such a psalm as might composd at any priod of th world, or in any country, whr thr was an intllignt viw and a carful osrvation of th works of God. It implis, indd, such a knowldg of th fact that God mad th world as could otaind only rvlation; ut it vincs also a powr of clos osrvation; a larg acquaintanc with th cration aroundus; a rlish for th scns of natur; as wll as a rich potic faculty, and a powr of dscription, adaptd to plac such scns for th mind as ralitits, and to mak us fl, in rading it, that w ar in th vry midst of th things which ar dscrid, so that thy sm to liv and mov for our ys. 2 In placing this psalm topically with Gnsis, I found that Barns, oviously a rilliant man, and I agr. Th psalm was proaly foundd on th rcord of th cration in gn.i., with a dsign to show that th ordr of th cration, as thr dscrid, was adaptd to th purposd which wr intndd, and was carrid out in th providntial arrangmnts now xisting on th arth; or, that, taking th ordr of th cration as dscrid thr, th xisitng stat of things furnishd an illustration of th wisdom and nvolnc of that ordr. Most English translations ar corrct. It gins with th 2 prson, Pil imprativ of lss. At first it would appar as though th writr is tlling God to lss his soul; howvr, th vr lss is also in th fminin singular, making his soul (a fminin singular) th ojct of th imprativ. H is tlling his own soul to lss God. Th Hrw word for lss is ârak (ê Ó ø Ç È ) [pronouncd aw-rahk ] and this word is found narly 350 tims in th Bil. Now, I don t know aout you, ut I can conciv of ing lssd y God; that is, it is asy for m to comprhnd God giving m grat walth (I am not spaking only of matrial walth hr); ut I hav a mor difficult tim rlatd to th ida of m lssing God. Howvr, in a situation lik this, our vry livs ar a lssing to God. Now this is an anthropopathism, to sur, whr our concpt of ing lssd is placd upon God. But th rality of th situation is that, y our livs, y th doctrin in our soul, y th intgrity of our day-to-day walk, w ar a lssing to God. That is, w glorify Him and His wisdom. On of th rasons I includ th KJV in ths translations, is that it taks itslf so sriously as a translation that whn a word is italicizd, that mans that it was addd y th translators to hlp mak sns of th sntnc, ut is not found in th Hrw. It is unfortunat that mor translations do not do this. Howvr, all translations run into 6 Barns Nots, Vol. IV, ook 3, p. 83.

For Th Living Bil and th somwhat mor rudit Nw English Bil, intrprtation is vrything. For Th Emphasizd Bil or Young s Litral Translation, translation is vrything. Most all othr Bils ar in th middl and sacrific on for th othr. Thr is no Thyslf, Himslf, or Yourslf to found in this vrs. In fact, what w hav in this vrs and th nxt two vrss is a sris of ight participls, most of thm Qal activ participls. A Qal activ participl chifly taks a vr and uss it as a noun, although it may also function as a vr or as an adjctiv. Our participl is similar; gnrally to a vr, w add th nding -ing and it coms a participl. Howvr, th usag is somwhat diffrnt. Hr, it can rfr to somon in particular. That is, this could rndrd th on covring; this is why many translations rad: Who covrs. Th first vr is th Qal activ participl of âþâh (ä èè òè ) [pronouncd ìaw-tawh] and it mans to wrap onslf, to covr, to nvlop, to concal, to nvlop onslf, to covr with somthing. This word is found only 17 tims in th Old Tstamnt, gnrally in th potry or in th prophts (which ar oftn potical). It is found only twic in anothr form of writing (Lv. 13:45 I Sam. 28:14). Thr ar tims whn adding onslf and with confus th maning mor than clarify it,.g., Jr. 43:12. A suffix can addd to th participl to indicat that somthing or somon is ing covrd, as is don in Isa. 22:17. What is quit hlpful with th othr translations is th ida that th first participl spcifically gos with v. 1 and that th scond participl gos with th nxt fw vrss; and that would a valid concpt, if th nxt vrs had a main vr in it, ut it dos not. As I mntiond, th nxt fw vrss ar a sris of participls, all of which rfr ack to God in v. 1; thrfor, ths participls ar ttrd rndrd as th on doing this or that. Th rason that w nd to dtrmin whthr or not thr should a split in this vrs is that contxtually tlls us what is covrd or nvlopd y light. If v. 2a longs strictly with v. 1 and if v. 2 longs srictly with what follows, thn th rndring covring Thyslf would apt, as v. 1 dals with potical attir (Honor and majsty You hav put on). Howvr, th sris of participls mans that which is nvlopd is not God ut what H has cratd th arth and th univrs. Sinc God is light, vrything which God coms into contact with is nvlopd in light or covrd with light. It is thorizd that thy continu to strtchd out vn today that is, that havn is xpanding at an 7 incrdil rat of spd. This fits in with th languag of th Bil. It is possil that fw if any of th authors of Scriptur had any tru concpt as to how vast and infinit wr th havns; howvr, what thy wrot was always in kping with th ida of a univrs which is infinit, for all intnts and purposs. This covring of th arth y th strtching out of th havns is a complt nvlopmnt. At this point, I only hav a vry rasonal hypothsis. In a world-wid flood, whr th watr stands aov all of th mountains (and this is on of th fw passags which mor clarly rprsnts that viw), w ar daling with an incrdil amount of watr. Most fundamntalists don t rally giv this much thought, as th asy xplanation is God can do anything, ut vry tim th amount of watr ovr th ntirty of th arth is raisd y, say, a foot, that is an incrdil amount of watr. 9 I hav no clu as to why th first a is lowr cas and th scond is capitalizd; you ll hav to ask Young.

8 Psalm I cannot locat th author who dalt with th flood from a scintific standpoint (svral hav), ut th prolm is whr did all th watr com from and whr did it go? Th two most common xplanations is that it cam out from th arth and from rain and it rtratd into to arth and ack into th sky as watr vapor. This is all vry Bilical, as this is what th Bil tachs us. Howvr, thr is no way that thr is nough watr in th arth to covr all of th mountains. Lt s just say that th arth was solid watr. Givn that th arth has a radius of 3950 mils, 10 that mans its volum is 8.2 x 10 cuic mils. Th highst mountain is 29,000 ft, or 5.5 mils aov sa lvl. Thrfor, th volum of th watr ncssary to covr th highst mountain would th volum of a sphr with a mil radius minus th volum of th arth, or x x 10 = 3.44 x 10 cuic mils of watr. Our largst ocan, th Pacific Ocan, an ara in which all th continnts could fit, has approximatly x 10 cuic mils of watr. So, what w would nd is roughly th quivalnt of two Pacific Ocans of additional watr in ordr to covr th ntir arth. I just don t liv that w hav th much watr in th atmosphr or undr th arth. As I said, th asy answr is that God cratd th majority of th flood watrs and thn mad thm disappar. Unfortunatly, that answr is not ncssarily Bilical. Now, crtainly you ar thinking 11 that God is capal of doing anything, within th confins of His prfct charactr. And, although I agr with you on that point, th Bil nowhr stats that God cratd this watr as a sparat part of cration. In fact, a vry good argumnt could mad against that, as w hav six days of crativ activity, aftr which God rstd. Not only that, ut th ocans wr all cratd vn prior to ths six days of rstoration and cration. Thr is no Bilical indication that God wok up on day and said, Oh, hll, I nd som mor watr! W ar clarly givn th sourc of th watrs th cam from rain and from undr th arth. But God rmmrd Noah and all th ast and all th cattl that wr with him in th ark, and God causd a wind to pass ovr th arth and th watr susidd. Also, th fountains of th dp and th floodgats of th sky wr closd, and th rain from th sky was rstraind (Gn. 8:1 2). What is nic, and God did not hav to do this for us, ut H did, is that H xplains how this prolm was dalt with and H dos so in this Psalm.
