4 Opiio A4 Thursday, MARCH 22, 2018 Teach medicie safety durig Natioal Poiso Prevetio Week BY DEB TOBINE Cotributor Poisoig is the leadig cause of ijury death i the Uited States. Drugs, both pharmaceutical ad illicit, cause the vast majority of poisoig deaths. Sice 1962, the Presidet of the Uited States has proclaimed the third week of March as Natioal Poiso Prevetio Week to raise awareess about the dagers of poisoigs ad how to prevet them. Opioid aalgesic pai relievers are ivolved i a substatial proportio of drug poisoig deaths. Opioid aalgesics iclude atural ad semi-sythetic opioid aalgesics such as hydrocodoe, morphie, ad oxycodoe; ad other sythetic opioid aalgesics such as fetayl ad methadoe. With so may adults abusig these substaces today, the potetial access to these drugs by childre is eve greater. It takes oly secods for a child to get hold of somethig poisoous. While poisoig is the leadig cause of ijury death i the Uited States, may poisoigs are prevetable follow these tips to help prevet poisoigs: 1) Oly take prescriptio medicatios that are prescribed to you by a healthcare professioal. Misusig or abusig prescriptio or over-the-couter medicatios is ot a safe alterative to illicit substace abuse; 2) Never take larger or more frequet doses of your medicatios, particularly prescriptio pai medicatios, to try to get faster or more powerful effects; 3) Never share or sell your prescriptio drugs; 4) Keep all prescriptio medicies (especially prescriptio paikillers, such as those cotaiig methadoe, hydrocodoe, or oxycodoe), over-thecouter medicies (icludig pai or fever relievers ad cough ad cold medicies), vitamis ad herbals i a safe place that ca oly be reached by adults; 5) Follow directios o the label whe you give or take medicies. Read all warig labels for potetial iteractios with other medicatios or alcohol; 6) Tur o a light whe you give or take medicies at ight so you kow you have the correct amout of the right medicie; 7) Keep medicies i their origial bottles or cotaiers; 8) Moitor the use of medicies prescribed for childre ad teeagers, such as medicies for attetio deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); ad 9) Dispose of uused, ueeded, or expired prescriptio drugs. You ca easily dispose of expired ad uused medicatios i the Plymouth or Bristol Police Medicatio Retur Box. It is free ad aoymous access available 24/7 i the lobby of the Plymouth ad Bristol Police Departmets. It is importat to remember that poisoigs ca happe to ayoe, aywhere, ad at ay time. The good ews is that may poisoigs are prevetable, ad if you eed help, it is readily available by callig Poiso Help at For free publicatios ad iformatio o prescriptio drug issues such as trackig your medicatios, safe disposal of medicatios, ad facts about prescriptio drug abuse, visit the CADY Web site at www. cadyic.org or www. facebook.com/cadyic. There are a lot of good hockey players i Divisio III high school hockey. Ad for the most part, those players were recogized whe the All-State lists were aouced at the ed of the seaso. However, I have to questio oe of the awards that was preseted i Divisio III. I kow the All-State teams are chose by the coaches, but lookig at the list I had to woder about the Divisio III Player of the Year. Obviously, I am partial to the teams I cover, so I am goig to support ayoe who plays for oe of the schools that I see o a regular basis. Ad i this case, I truly believe a Keett Eagle was robbed of the Player of the Year hoors. Now, do t get me wrog, I saw Belmot-Gilford s Harriso Paret play a couple of times this seaso ad he is a pretty good player. He certaily deserves to be a First Team All-State selectio after leadig the Bulldogs to the Divisio III semifials with a upset of Berli i SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING the quarterfial roud. Ad he should have bee give a little cosideratio for Player of the Year. But i my mid, Keett seior defesema Mackezie Murphy is the best player i the divisio. I fact, he is oe of the best players I ve see play i ay divisio throughout the last few years. Mackezie is the backboe of the Keett defese but also quarterbacks the offese from behid the et as the Eagles prepare to head up the ice. I am coviced there is obody i high school hockey i New Hampshire who sees the ice better tha Mackezie does. If you watch his eyes whe he circles behid the et, you ca see him scaig the ice, lookig for his teammates ad preparig to sed the puck forward. If he does t see a opeig, he ca skate the puck up the ice with the best of them ad the fact that he joied the 100-poit club for his career this seaso shows that he is o slouch o the offesive ed of the ice as well. I also happe to thik Mackezie Murphy is oe of the icest kids you re goig to meet ad oe of the most humble kids you could ask for. He comes from a hockey family, with two older brothers who have played for Keett, a youger brother o the team ad a youger sister ad brother who will evetually be o the team. The Murphy family is syoymous with hockey i the Mout Washigto Valley ad his hockey kowledge is obvious every time he laces up his skates ad takes the ice. Harriso Paret is a fie player ad deserves the hoors he receives. However, my humble opiio is that Mackezie Murphy was the Divisio III Player of the Year. But that s just my two cets. Fially, have a great day Mike ad Kriste Lae.
