David Becomes Kig 2 Samuel 5:1-5; Psalm 37 David Mours Kig Saul We begi this quarter of Old Testamet studies with the aoitig of David as kig of Israel. May years earlier, Israel s first kig, Saul, had tured from the Lord, ad God had selected David to succeed Saul. For years after that, Saul sought to have David killed. However, David had refused to act agaist Saul or to become kig util he was certai of God s timig. He had lived a difficult life, almost as a outlaw. Now Saul was dead; after beig wouded i battle, he had take his ow life. I fact, Saul ad three of his sos, icludig David s fried Joatha, had died i the same battle (1 Samuel 31:1-6). So the door was wide ope for David to become kig of Israel. David did t rejoice whe he leared of the deaths. Istead he ad all his me moured ad wept the etire day (2 Samuel 1:1-12). David eve wrote a sog i hoor of Saul ad Joatha, which ca be foud i 2 Samuel 1: He was truly saddeed that their lives had eded as they did. he relied o God, God rewarded him ad Israel with prosperity. David wrote Psalm 37, which describes his trust i God eve whe he was surrouded by eemies. I this psalm, David says to delight yourself i the Lord ad he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:). This could have bee the theme of David s life. Uitig the Kigdom David was made kig of Judah. Israel followed Aber, the commader of Saul s army, who made Ish-Bosheth, a so of Saul, kig over Israel (2 Samuel 2:1-9). After years of much fightig, itrigue, ad bloodshed, Ish-Bosheth was murdered, ad the leaders of Israel came to David to make him kig over them. Say: To rely o someoe or somethig meas that we cout o that perso or thig ot to fail or let us dow. We rely o thigs, ad they sometimes fail. Eve people sometimes fail. But we ca always rely o God because God ever fails. Today we ll talk about why WE CAN RELY ON GOD. Figer-Puppet Kig Say: Today s Bible passage tells us about someoe who relied o God. I 2 Samuel 5:1-5, the Bible tells us that David became kig over Israel. Ope your Bible, ad show the passage to the group. Use your puppet to talk to your parter about these questios. Whe have you had a big job to do that seemed scary? What ca you do to rely o God whe you have a big job to do? Say: Whe we feel afraid as David may have WE CAN RELY ON GOD to help us. God helped David, ad God will help us. Give each child a Bible. If you do t have a Bible for each child, have kids use their hads for the followig activity. Say: Let s practice a way of rememberig that God is our refuge ad ever-preset help i times of trouble. For example, you might wat to make up a story about a perso who eeded help ad who relied o God for that help. Or you might wat to tell about a time you were sick ad relied o God to help you get better. My Bible Fu pecils Reliace Stories Easy Prep Tear out the pages from each My Bible Fu studet book.
