3 19 God Dwells With Us Joh 1:1-14 BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS I the Begiig the Word Was With God The first setece of the book of Joh recalls Geesis 1:1. I this first sectio of his Gospel, Joh outlies the topic he explores throughout the etire book: The Word Jesus was huma, was divie, ad came to provide salvatio for all who believe. Eve i the origial Greek, the emphasis i the first setece is t o the subject, the Word. Istead it s o the begiig. Joh wated to make it clear that Jesus himself was preset i the begiig, before the creatio of the world. The fact that Joh says Jesus was with God makes it clear that he is distict from the Father, but Joh the says that Jesus was God, also makig it clear that he is fully divie. The Word is a title give to Jesus i the Bible oly by Joh. Joh sees Jesus as the ultimate revelatio of God the Word of God i huma form. However, i becomig flesh, the Word did ot cease to be God. Jesus was fully God ad fully huma. For the beefit of doubters, Joh essetially says We kow it s true because we ve see him. Jesus revealed the glory of God himself to people o earth. God has doe it all for us. All we eed to do is believe. The Jesus Coectio Fully God ad fully ma, Jesus lived with people o this earth 2,000 years ago. He died, he came back to life, ad he lives with us today. That s reaso to celebrate! God is t far off from our cocers ad our daily lives. Jesus Christ lives withi us. Are you livig with the full awareess of Jesus presece i your life? Thak Jesus for beig your fried, ad seek ways you ca be more fully aware of his compaioship ad cousel. You ca write your prayer here. Jesus Was Active i Creatio I emphasizig that Jesus is God, Joh poits out i verse 3 that Jesus was active i Creatio. Thus we have a picture of the Triity at work i Creatio: The Father spoke, ad through the actig of the Word, his words were carried out as the Spirit moved upo the waters. Though Jesus, as God icarate, was physically bor at a poit i time, the Word exists eterally as God. Joh leaves o doubt i his readers mids that Jesus is fully divie. I Jesus, God Became Flesh ad Blood I verse 14, Joh poits out that the Word, God himself, did t come to earth just to teach people or to live amog people, but he came as flesh a huma beig with all the struggles ad temptatios we face. Grades 1 & 2

Gather everyoe together i a circle. Say: Let s start with a fu game called Where Are You? I ll call to you from somewhere i the room, ad you ll try to fid me. I ll call out, I m over here! ad you ll aswer me by callig, Where are you? Practice callig your phrase ad havig the childre respod. The say: The trick is that you ll have to keep your eyes closed. I ll eve tur off the lights so you ll really have to search for me i the dark. Are you ready? Remember o peekig! Have childre close their eyes. Move to a corer of the room, ad call softly, I m over here. As childre try to fid you, keep movig aroud the room, callig out from differet spots. Play for just a few miutes. The tur o the lights, ad have kids sit i a circle. Tell what this game was like for you. What thigs might ve helped you i this game? What is light good for i your life? Say: It was hard to fid me i the dark. You could t really tell where I was, ad you did t kow how to get to me. But it s ot that way with God at all. He ever hides, ad he does t wat us to have to search for him i the dark. He wats us to fid him. That s why he set Jesus to light the way to God. As you liste to the Bible today, be thikig about today s Bible Poit: JESUS IS GOD. Grades 1 & 2

5 21 2 BIBLE EXPLORATION Who Is Jesus? Ope your Bible to Joh 1:1-9, ad show kids the passage. Say: Today we ll lear that JESUS IS GOD. Who Is Jesus? That meas Jesus was with God, ad that he was God, right from the very begiig whe God created the world! Ecourage the childre to tell thigs God made. Say: That s right God made everythig. The Bible tells us that Jesus came to be our light, too. Let s read about that. Read aloud Joh 1:4-5. Say: Jesus came to be our light. Without Jesus, our world is dark ad full of si. Tur out the flashlight for 5 to 10 secods. The tur it back o, ad say: Jesus is the light i our lives. He s the special light that Joh the Baptist told people to get ready for. Liste to what the Bible says about Joh. Read aloud Joh 1:6-9. The tur o the lights i the room. What do you like or ot like about beig i the dark? How does a dark room remid you of life without Jesus? What might it mea that Jesus is like a light i your life? Say: We eed light to live, ad like that, we eed Jesus to really live because JESUS IS GOD. Today we ll lear more about what it meas that Jesus is the light of me. Bright Lights Give each child a My Bible Fu page. Set out scissors, pes, ad tape. Say: The Bible says that Jesus is the light of me. That meas he s a bright light i our lives he helps us kow ad uderstad truth ad love. Let s make some bright lights to spread this woderful ews. As childre work, play The Spirit Gives Me Life (Romas 8:10b) (track 4 o the CD). Lyrics are at the ed of this lesso. Say: We ca use flashlights to shie through these Bright Lights we made. Right ow there s o light i them, but whe we add flashlights, they ll be really cool. Like that, Jesus is a light i our lives ad he gives us life ad brightess to share with the world. What do you like ad ot like about your Bright Lights right ow without the flashlight? Why might you wat to add a flashlight to the Bright Light you made? What does Jesus add to your life? Say: God made us special just the way we are. But like our cups, we also wat a light to fill our lives. The Bible says Jesus is that light ad JESUS IS GOD. Jesus light brigs us life! Without Jesus, we have o light. Let s use our cups to help us share about Jesus light with others. The True Light Supplies Bible My Bible Fu cups from the Bright Lights activity flashlight The True Light Tur off the lights, ad say: Joh 1:4-5 says, I him was life, ad that life was the light of me. The light shies i the darkess. Demostrate the process as you say: Each of you will get a tur to use the flashlight. Tur off the flashlight, ad say: Have you ever tried to fid somethig i the dark? That s how the world would be without Jesus. Without Jesus, we would ever be able to uderstad what God is like. We d ever be able to fid our way to God. But Jesus came to light the way for us. Tur the flashlight o agai ad shie it through a cup. Jesus is the light that shies the way to God. Ad he did all that because he loves us! Lead kids i repeatig the Key Verse agai: The Word became flesh ad made his dwellig amog us (Joh 1:14). What thigs did you otice as you shied the flashlight through your cups? What are some ways Jesus lights up your life? You poked holes so the light could shie through. The first lie is for your ame. Pause as kids write their ames o the first lie. Say: The secod lie is for someoe else s ame. If someoe was aloe i a dark room, I imagie you d wat to help that perso fid the light. Well, it s the same with Jesus light.
