I will ot have to divide my time betwee becomig employed ad earig a livig ad the havig a few hours left to look out for you. This special electio was a ufortuate forced expediture of u-budgeted fuds by our five tows istead of simply waitig util the regular geeral electio i November, While I believe it fially to be over, it appears the other side may ot have come to accept that reality. Soud familiar? I a very few moths, we ll have to do this all over health ad welfare, his diet cotiues. Sellers' lawsuit was a costly waste of taxpayer dollars Sigs of our times Thak you for your support To the Editor: Headlies ca be deceivig. A recet article i the Newfoud Ladig described how the tow of Bristol was victorious i the lawsuit brought by Joh Sellers regardig so called votig irregularities. I fact, it was aythig but a wi cosiderig the toll it took o the budget ad tow staff. Mr. Sellers claimed votig sheaigas that placed the whole electio i doubt ad was askig for a do over, essetially. The actual court decisio is very iterestig readig. Oe by oe, the judge detailed the claims made ad ruled i favor of the tow. The oly issue foud was that a few of the absetee ballots were missig sigatures or affidavits. I this situatio, the judge ruled that o malice was iteded, ad therefore the court takes the most liberal iterpretatio whe it comes to votig so that people's voices are heard loud ad clear. This exercise cost the taxpayers over $20,000 i hard dollars ad utold hudreds of hours of lost staff time which should have bee dedicated to workig for the residets ad taxpayers. Iroically, this whole waste of time ad taxpayer dollars comes from a elected member of the budget committee who has, time ad time agai, stated he was workig for the taxpayers. Would't it be great if people elected to serve the residets ad taxpayers actually worked toward those iterests ad ot their ow, puitive ageda? Shau Lagueux Bristol To the Editor: I thik we all would agree the times we are livig i are becomig more uruly, treacherous ad dowright tese, ot just i the USA, but across the globe. May thik the solar eclipse was awesome ad a very cool evet to experiece, ad it was. I believe there are reasos thigs happe, like every actio has a re-actio. So, maybe we should start askig why the eclipse ow, ad why across the USA? I am sure you are aware there will be aother full solar eclipse i seve years, ad betwee these two eclipses, the USA is marked with a X, which I fid iterestig. Sure, there are may eclipses, but two eclipses i a short period of time i the same geeral area has got to make oe woder if there is a bigger meaig of these evets besides the awe factor of viewig a eclipse. Did you kow there is aother heavely evet that is about to happe i September betwee the 9th ad the 23rd? Did you kow a super eclipse happeed while Jesus was dyig o the cross for us? Thik about this a full solar eclipse lasts about three miutes, but the oe while Jesus was o the cross lasted for three hours ot three miutes, but three hours. Ask yourself what would it take for God to get the attetio or sed a message to all the people i the earth at the same time? A heavely evet, maybe! So, here is where I am goig with this letter. I believe God is tryig to get our attetio ad sed a message to everyoe. This September, i just a few days, there will be aother great sig i heave that has ot ever happeed before. The Bible recorded this evet about 2,000 years ago i the book of Revelatio chapter 12 verses 1 ad 2; i the costellatios of Virgo/Leo. This evet will oly happe oce i makid's lifetime. We ca easily kow this because of computer programs that are available, ad the programs ca go back or forward i time to see if it has or will happe agai. With the world seemigly becomig so ustable (I am ot talkig weather evets), we all should take otice ad look ito the meaig of this evet i September. I believe this evet has a wow factor o the scale of importace as the birth of Jesus (star of Bethlehem) ad while Jesus was dyig o a cross for us (what I called a super eclipse). Thik about this if God set ad allowed His oly so to die for us (Joh 3:16), would God try to war us if somethig is about to happe? God is love, ad He is a spirit, ad He wats us to be the same as He is ad He provided a way for us through His so Jesus. I my opiio, it would ot hurt if we repeted ad ask for forgiveess. Joh Sellers Bristol agai, but with the major advatage of doig so i a ormal electio where low turout ca t be molded ito a false competitive advatage. Some thik the way we gover ourselves is expesive, but it is simply the price we have to pay for our freedom. Ad that s especially true whe the public trough is take advatage of by opportuists with o record whatsoever ad fed by ego-traces iduced by repetitive praise o social media. Well, here s oe big Like from me o the results of this electio! I shall cotiue my work o your behalf, ad strive to remai fiscally prudet as a elected official i represetig everyoe s poit of view, ad takig the ecessary time to do it right. Thak you agai for your support. Already committed ad at work o your behalf, ad lookig forward to solidifyig these results agai i November Sicerely yours, Vicet Paul Migliore Represetative-elect Grafto Couty District 9 Bridgewater

5 Opiio A5 If you have't oticed, we are't free BY MICHELLE SANBORN NHCRN Board of Directors Alexadria They say, beauty is i the eye of the beholder, but what about freedom? What was freedom to those that coloized the New World i compariso to the freedom experieced by those that were stewards of the lad before white ma arrived? The freedoms we experiece today are ot the same freedoms our parets or gradparets might have fought for. We ve see the iterpretatio of freedom chage over geeratios, but we are experiecig a uprecedeted threat to our basic atural freedoms with the curret admiistratio. Freedoms fought for by wome, labor, LGBTQ ad civil rights movemets may become a thig of the past for the ext four years or more. These hardfought freedoms have bee chipped away at by corporate elitists ad govermets that serve them prior to Trump becomig Presidet, but his presidecy is provig to be the most racist, elitist, homophobic, misogyistic, corporate-stacked admiistratio this atio has ever see. Freedom may have differet applicatios to differet people, but freedom is basically the state of beig free, civil liberty; the right to ejoy all privileges or rights of citizeship. Raiy weather prompts cacellatio of Circle Triathlo BY DONNA RHODES drhodes@salmopress.ews ASHLAND The remats of Hurricae Harvey had a profoud effect i New Hampshire last weeked, whe orgaizers of the Circle Triathlo felt it was prudet to cacel the eighth ruig of their athletic fudraiser to esure the safety of all who take part, from participats of all ages to the families who come put to support them, the evet voluteers ad local safety persoel. I a letter to all who had registered for the triathlo, Developmet ad Marketig Coordiator Sally Sheffield said, For the athletes, we worry about the bike course i wet coditios, give that the shoulders are arrow, the descets steep, the turs sharp ad the road coditios variable. She cotiued by addressig other cocers that led to their decisio. To the families with youg childre, we worry about the lack of warm shelter ad the ability to covice our youg oes that jumpig i a lake at 54 degrees ad raiig is fu. To all our voluteers ad the may police ad fire professioals that give their time o a Suday morig each year, we hoor your commitmet to the Tri ad wat to ot ask more of you tha is reasoable. To our may sposors we say Thak you from the bottom of our hearts, ad kow that your baers, goodwill (ad pacakes!) will grace the Tri i The triathlo, Circle Program s Executive Director Kathlee Kears said, is desiged to be a positive fudraisig experiece for everyoe from youg childre to older adults who look to challege themselves with a swim, bike ride ad ru. We did t wat people to come away from this experiece with a bad taste i their mouth due to the coditios. We had cocers ad made the tough decisio to cacel, Kears said. As we like to say here though, we ll just tri, tri, ad tri agai ext year. It was the first time i the evet s eight year history that it was caceled due to weather. Participats ad sposors were give three optios for the moey they had already cotributed to the 2017 Circle Triathlo. They could defer their doatios or etry fees util 2018, receive a full refud, or doate their cotributios to the Circle Program, which provides uique life opportuities for youg girls i cetral New Hampshire. Sheffield said everyoe was very uderstadig ad supportive of the decisio to cacel this year s evet. Oe dedicated triathlete, who has take part i the Circle Triathlo for the past seve years, has ot oly doated his etry fee to Circle Program, but is ow challegig others to do the same. He ad his wife said they will match the amout for all who doate their fee back to the program, Sheffield said. We re very blessed.

What about whether our food is geetically egieered or ot, watered with frack waste, or fertilized with pharmaceutical-lade huma waste? What about kowig if the meat available i the store is from some coutry with absolutely o safety regulatios or whether there is mercury i the seafood? This is the kid of iformatio that seriously affects our choices because it motivates our decisio to sped or ot to sped. These limitatios o our freedom to kow ad therefore our freedom to choose, are limited because they affect the bottom lie profits of idustry. Freedom is t really freedom whe it is cofied to a set of limitatios defied by those profitig from the limitatios defiig our choices. Food is t the oly area our freedom to decide is limited. Whe a idustry is seekig to use a atural resource i our commuity, who decides whether or ot that idustry is a good idea for the area? These decisios are made by state ad federal govermetal agecies with appoited committee members cosidered experts i the fields of the idustry they represet. The real experts that truly kow how a project is goig to affect the area are those most affected by the project real huma beigs that live i those commuities ad the ecosystems that will be the subject of the developmet. We have political party limitatios as well. You get to choose betwee a Democrat or a Republica if you wat to have ay part i the political process. If you are a Idepedet or support the Gree Party, well, that s ice, but they do t get the media coverage or the big fuders backig their cause so i essece, they do t get to participate ad therefore, either do you. Where is the freedom to simply ru for a office as a elected official based o what you actually believe ad what you really pla to do for those you represet? Where is the freedom for voters to have a legitimate process to choose ad elect who represets them? We should all be alarmed about how future admiistratios will defie our future freedoms. Trump is a corporate elitist that is ow i a powerful positio to serve the corporate elite i ways o other presidet has bee positioed to do. Now, more tha ever, we eed to stop spiig our wheels i a system desiged by corporate elites to dey We the People our freedom to decide what happes where we live. We eed a people s movemet that will mobilize across party lies, across social divides, across regioal separatios that will stop givig coset to illegitimate ad ujust laws that serve the corporate-state. How ofte have we heard the questio about whether the Democrats i Washigto will work with the Republicas, or the other way aroud, or whether they will fight each other every step of the way? It is time we fight freedom-robbig policies every step of the way at the local level. Edward Joes: Fiacial Focus Brighte Your Gradchildre s Fiacial Future Mother s Day ad Father s Day may get more attetio, but Natioal Gradparets Day, observed o Sept. 10, has gaied i popularity. If you re a gradparet, you might expect to receive some ice cards, but if you wat to make the day especially meaigful, you may wat to cosider givig some log-lastig fiacial gifts to your gradchildre. What might come to mid first, of course, is helpig your gradchildre pay for college. You ca choose from several college savigs vehicles, but you may be especially iterested i a 529 savigs pla. With a 529 pla, your earigs accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher educatio expeses, such as tuitio, books, ad room ad board. (Keep i mid that 529 pla distributios ot used for qualified expeses may be subject to federal ad state icome taxes ad a 10% IRS pealty o the earigs.) You may be eligible for a state icome tax icetive for cotributig to a 529 pla. Check with your tax advisor regardig these icetives, as well as all tax-related issues pertaiig to 529 plas. Oe beefit of usig a 529 pla is cotributio limits are quite geerous. Plus, a 529 pla is flexible: If your gradchild decides agaist college, you ca trasfer the pla to aother beeficiary. Geerally, a 529 pla owed by a gradparet wo t be reported as a asset o the Free Applicatio For Federal Studet Aid (FAFSA), but withdrawals from the pla are treated as utaxed icome to the beeficiary (i.e., your gradchild) ad that has a big impact o fiacial aid, a much bigger impact tha if the pla was listed as a paretal asset. Begiig with the academic year, however, FAFSA ow requires families to report icome from two years before the school year starts, rather tha icome from the prior caledar year. Cosequetly, it might be beeficial, from a fiacial aid stadpoit, for you, as a gradparet, to start payig for college expeses from a 529 pla i the year i which your gradchild becomes a juior. Cotact a fiacial aid professioal about the potetial fiacial aid impact of ay gifts you re cosiderig. A 529 pla is t the oly fiacial gift you could give to your gradchildre. You might also cosider givig them shares of stock, possibly held i a custodial accout, usually kow as a UTMA or UGMA accout. Oe possible drawback: You oly cotrol a custodial accout util your gradchildre reach the age of majority, at which time they ca use the moey for whatever they wat, whereas distributios from a 529 savigs pla must be used for qualified higher educatio expeses. Still, your gradchildre might be particularly iterested i owig the stocks cotaied i the custodial accout most youg people ejoy owig shares of compaies that make familiar products. Ad to further iterest your gradchildre i a lifetime of ivestig, you may wat to show them how a particular stock you ve owed for decades has grow over time. Naturally, you ll also wat to let them kow that stocks ca move up ad dow i the short term, ad there are o guaratees of profits but the log-term growth potetial of stocks is still a compellig story. 18 Sports B8 Loe Kearsarge goal siks Bobcat boys BY JOSHUA SPAULDING Sports Editor SUTTON Sometimes a score does t tell the story of a game. That was the case for the Plymouth boys soccer team last week at Kearsarge, as the scoreboard showed the Bobcats takig a 1-0 loss to the Cougars. They played well, they re really gettig at it, said coach Jesse Elderki. We were all over them util that goal, we were movig the ball. The oe goal came 26 miutes ito the match after the Bobcats had bee domiatig the possessio. A drive from midfield dropped at the 18 ad was volleyed home by the Cougars to make it 1-0. Both teams had six shots i the first half, while Kearsarge had two corers to Plymouth s oe i the first half. That kid of took the wid out of our sails, Elderki said, but oted that thigs picked up i the secod half. Plymouth held the Cougars to just two shots i the secod half while puttig aother six shots o et. They also domiated the corer couty b a 4-1 tally i the secod half. Obviously we did well, we just gave up that oe goal, Elderki said. A great weeked of Survivor ad sightseeig out west He oted that upo lookig at the shot chart, all of Kearsarge s shots came from outside the 18. The worst part about this team is that we re 0-2, the Bobcat coach poited out. Elderki sigled out SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING Last week s colum was writte i Loga Airport as I was awaitig my flight to Salt Lake City. The trip proved to be a lot of fu, though as metioed last week, uless I fid a secod job or wi the Megabucks, it will probably be my last legthy trip for a while (ot coutig the Olympics, obviously). As I ve metioed, I am a fa of Rob Has a Podcast, ru by former Survivor player Rob Cesterio. While I liste mostly for the Survivor coverage, he does a lot more tha that, ruig a weekly ews show, plus coverig other reality ad scripted televisio shows. Probably the oly thig I liste to more of is the Red Sox games I tue i to every sigle ight. Rob has bee doig a lot of live shows over the last few years ad I ve made it to every sigle oe that was focused aroud Survivor. I ve made six trips to New York City for live evets, plus a pair of trips to Los Ageles, oe to Toroto, oe to Chicago ad oe to Reo. Most of the trips are day trips, where I come ad go o the same day, but I decided to make Utah a few days. I flew out of Bosto o Friday eveig ad arrived i Salt Lake City at almost midight. After securig my retal car, I got to the hotel at about 12:30 a.m. However, I tried to stick to my exercise program ad got out of bed at 7 a.m. o Saturday to do my workout i the hotel room. The food I ate throughout the day probably was ot as much o the diet. We had a group breakfast for fas of the podcast ad the first pael got uder way at 10:30 a.m. or so i the hotel coferece room. After a short break for luch, the secod pael, which was the Survivor-cetric oe, took place. I additio to Rob, Survivors takig part icluded three-time player ad Devli Costa, Alex Nagle ad Day Carey for their fie play, while otig that Sawyer Wilcox made four saves i the Plymouth et. Plymouth will be i actio today, Sept. 7, at home agaist Goffstow at 4 p.m., o Moday, seaso 27 wier Tyso Apostol, Rick Nelso from seaso 23, Joas Otsuji from seaso 24, Rachel Foulger Apostol from seaso 27 ad Neleh Deis Nielse, who was o the fourth seaso. Like most of these paels that I atted, it was great to hear stories from their time o the game as well as their perspective o thigs we saw but may ot have gotte the whole story. I had met Tyso before i a evet i Los Ageles ad just like he was o the show, the guy is a riot. I was usure what to expect from Rick, sice he was quiet o the show, but he was fuy ad had some great stories. Later that eveig we had a gatherig i a bar ear the hotel ad I spet about 45 miutes talkig to Rick. He was pretty shocked to fid out that Rob records five or six podcasts about each oe-hour episode of Survivor ad that people flew i to atted the evet, icludig oe guy from Saudi Arabia. I was hopig that my brother would be off work so we could Sept. 11, the team hosts Joh Stark at 4 p.m. ad the visits Widham at 4:30 p.m. o Wedesday, Sept. 13. Joshua Spauldig ca be reached at , ext. 155 or josh@salmopress.ews. meet up o Suday, so I booked a late flight, but he was out i the field. Istead I spet some time drivig aroud the area ad visited a umber of the Olympic sites, as well as the beautiful state capitol buildig ad the Great Salt Lake. Not oly was it great to meet some ew Survivors ad sped some time talkig about my favorite televisio show with them, it was also great to catch up with frieds I ve made through the podcast ad meet some ew folks with who I ca share my love of Survivor.
