I will, ad he will Brad Smith, my Colebrook Academy classmate of 65, told me he d see geese flyig orth o March Over time, you will ru ito various suggestios for ivestig successfully. Yet upo closer ispectio, may of these ideas tur out to be myths which could cause you trouble if you treat them as solid advice. Here are five of these myths, alog with some reasos for igorig them: You ca fid the ext big thig. All of us probably wish we could have gotte i o the groud floor of Apple or Microsoft or some other tremedously profitable compay. Ad who kows? There may ideed be a similar other busiess out there, waitig to take off. But it s almost impossible for ayoe to idetify these potetial blockbusters. There s really o shortcut to ivestmet success you eed the patiece ad disciplie to ivest for the log term, ad you eed to build a portfolio that s appropriate for your goals ad risk tolerace. Ivestors should always seek to buy low ad sell high. This is actually good advice or it would be, if were possible to cosistetly follow it. But how ca you kow whe the market is high eough to sell or low eough to buy? You ca t ad either ca ayoe else. Tryig to time 29 or so. At the time, Bob Vashaw had just fiished helpig clear about a foot ad a half of ew sow. I told Brad that either the geese were cofused, or Bob ad I were, or all four of us, probably makig good compay Log-distace trai trips seem to captivate readers. Wheever I write about takig such a trip, lots of mail follows. There are five trascotietal trais o the North America cotiet. Oe is the fabled Caadia, which I ve take, ad the rest are i the Uited States, which I have also take. This sprig I m off agai, o the Lakeshore Limited (a overight trai) from Bosto to Chicago, ad the o the Southwest Chief, from Chicago to Los Ageles (two ights, three days). I m ot a trai faatic ad have o fear of flyig---it s all about comfort ad the freedom to move aroud. The bottom lie is that if I have a choice, ad have the time, I ll take a trai over a plae, aytime. Travel by trai is ot for everyoe, but to me it is bliss. You get to have your ow room, ad a comfortable bed. Never, I advise ayoe who the market rarely works. A more appropriate strategy is to ivest regularly ad to diversify your holdigs amog stocks, bods, govermet securities ad other vehicles, based o your goals ad risk tolerace. Diversificatio ca help protect you agaist market dowturs that primarily affect just oe asset class. Keep i mid, though, that diversificatio ca t guaratee profits or protect agaist all losses. It s always smart to buy ivestmets that have performed well recetly. You may have read, i ivestmet prospectuses, that past performace is o guaratee of future results. These words are certaily true; just because a ivestmet has had a good ru recetly, it does t mea its success will cotiue idefiitely. You eed to evaluate each ivestmet o its ow merits ad o how well it fits ito your overall portfolio. Iteratioal ivestig is too risky. I today s global ecoomy, it may be more risky ot to ivest some of your portfolio iteratioally. U.S. stocks represet less tha half of global stock market capitalizatio so by stoppig at our borders, asks, take a log-distace overight trai without reservig a room. You have your ow bathroom ad shower, plus two big louge chairs ad a picture widow. You get to wader aroud, to the louge, the dome-car, the sack bar with its tables, the diig car. You ca eve ask that your meal be brought to you room, to be placed o a wall-mouted folddow table. The first questio I always get o trai travel is about price. The secod is time. Let s take the secod questio first. If you are a ervous perso, a A to B traveler, someoe who caot read, relax, ad ejoy the trip itself ad the time to totally relax, the trai is ot for you. As for the price, cosider that you re gettig a hotel room for a couple of ights (do the math) ad breakfast ad supper each day, ad the freedom to move aroud. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille ad featurig a cast of thousads, The Kig of Kigs (1927) stads as oe of the sesatios of Hollywood s early days. I hoor of this year s Easter seaso, a restored prit of The Kig of Kigs will be screeed with live music o Thursday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Flyig Mokey Moviehouse ad Performace Ceter, 39 South Mai St., Plymouth. Live music will be performed by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based silet film accompaist. Tickets are $10 per perso. As a movie, The Kig of Kigs was desiged to push the limits of Hollywood story-tellig. Director DeMille, already famous for over-the-top historical epics such as the origial Te Commadmets (1923), demaded ad got a the-astroomical budget of $2 millio, which he used to costruct massive sets, hire thousads of extras, ad stage a eormous earthquake at the film s climax. The moumetal devastatio uleashed by Christ s crucifixio dwarfs eve the cataclysmic Holy Grail fiale of Idiaa Joes ad the Last Crusade, wrote film historia Charles Musser i 1992, observig that raw material ad o-uio labor gave more bag for the buck i The film was cosidered darig as the first maistream Hollywood picture to depict the actios ad life of Jesus o-scree i great detail, pavig the way for future geeratios of filmmakers. DeMille eve spiced thigs up by icludig teams of zebras ad other exotic o-ative creatures i the film. Because of this, The Kig of Kigs was regarded as blasphemous by some, ad proved as cotroversial i its day as Marti Scorsese s The Last Temptatio of Christ was i 1988, the traditio of classical music while explorig ew artistic paths. Our orgaizatio offers patros a egagig, immersive festival experiece by presetig world-class performaces of symphoic, choral ad chamber music. Strog collaboratios with commuity parters are a hallmark of this importat cultural istitutio, eablig trasformative music experieces ad educatioal programs to studets of all ages. For 20 years, the Festival has bee i residece at Plymouth State Uiversity at the Silver Ceter for the Arts. The festival was fouded i 1952 as a small chamber orchestra performig o Melody Islad i Lake Wiipesaukee ad has grow to be a highly-valued commuity asset. Every summer durig July ad August, professioal musicias from aroud the coutry come to Plymouth to perform well-kow classics ad cotemporary works. NHMusicFestival Musser wrote. Although DeMille made his film uder the pious supervisio of clergy, he maaged to titillate audieces with the same heady mixture of sex ad moralism that had made...earlier films so successful. I just oe example, DeMille opes the film with the character of Mary Magdalee leadig a orgy, though she is quickly rescued from debauchery by a ecouter with Jesus. Outrage or ot, audieces flocked to the two-ad-a-half-hour epic, which was released i May 1927 ad quickly broke box office records for attedace i the U.S. ad aroud the globe. Audieces regarded it as grad etertaimet. The cast icluded early Hollywood star H.B. Warer as Jesus Christ, wiig plaudits for his portrayal of the lead role. (Warer s later roles icluded druggist Mr. Gower i Frak Capra s 1946 Christmas classic It s a Woderful Life. ) Peter is portrayed by character actor Erest Torrece, famous as Captai Hook i the origial versio of Peter Pa (1924); the role of Judas is acted by Joseph Schildkraut, already a Hollywood vetera who later wet o to play Nicodemus i The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), a much-later Hollywood epic o the same topic. The Kig of Kigs was also oted for techical breakthroughs. It featured state-ofthe-art movie lightig techiques, icludig a glowig halo that surrouded Christ wheever he appears o scree. The Kig of Kigs was also amog the first maistream Hollywood pictures to use color i several sequeces. To ehace the film s spiritual uderpiigs, durig productio DeMille arraged for a Catholic Mass to be celebrated each morig before shootig started. I a publicity ploy, DeMille also made his stars eter cotracts that preveted them from doig aythig ubiblical for a five-year period; prohibited activities icluded attedig ball games, playig cards, frequetig ight clubs, swimmig, ad ridig i covertibles. The film s sets eded up beig so massive that they simply were t tor dow, ad so woud up appearig i several other pictures. A giat gate built for The Kig of Kigs was later used i 1933 s Kig Kog. Some of the origial sets were fially lit ablaze i 1939 for the burig of Atlata i Goe with the Wid. Critics remai impressed by the film s epic sweep, although they ofte dismiss how DeMille padered to a mass audiece. It s a stupedous exhibitio by ay stadard, though you ca practically smell the sawdust ad greasepait, wrote critic Peter Matthews i Despite the baloey (or because of it), The Kig of Kigs captures the fervor of aïve devotio. O that level, the movie is a geuiely upliftig experiece, Matthews wrote. Kig of Kigs will be screeed with live music performed by silet film accompaist Jeff Rapsis. Rapsis, who uses origial themes to improvise silet film scores, said great silet film dramas such as Kig of Kigs used their lack of dialogue to create stories that cocetrated o the "big" emotios such as Love, Despair, Ager, ad Joy. Because of this, audieces cotiue to respod to them today, especially if they're preseted as iteded with a live audiece ad live music. "Dramas such as 'Kig of Kigs' were created to be show o the big scree as a commual experiece," Rapsis said. "With a audiece ad live music, they still come to life as their creators iteded them to," he said. Kig of Kigs is the latest i a mothly series of silet films preseted with live music at the Flyig Mokey. The series provides local audieces the opportuity to experiece silet film as it was iteded to be show: o the big scree, i good-lookig prits, with live music, ad with a audiece. Upcomig evets i the Flyig Mokey's silet film program iclude: Thursday, May 18, 6:30 p.m.: Speedway (1929) starrig William Haies, Erest Torrace. Faste your seat belts! We mark the traditioal Memorial Day ruig of the Idiaapolis 500 with a vitage race car drama filmed right o the famed track at speeds toppig 115 mph! 11 BY RONALD L. MAGOON Presidet & CEO Frakli Savigs Bak Our Missio Statemet at Frakli Savigs Bak begis with these three words. You may be woderig why? Why is it importat to put those three words i at all? Besides, are t all baks the same? As we hoor Commuity Bakig Moth i April, I wat to share with you my thoughts o why commuity bakig matters. The aswer is o! Not all baks are the same. You would thik they are as the word bak has become a geeric term used to describe a fiacial istitutio that takes deposits, makes loas, cashes checks, sometimes offers ivestmets ad isurace, ad has a Keurig i their waitig area to keep their customers happy. However baks are just like trees, there are a variety of species ad each has their ow idetifyig characteristics. Just like there are 13 types of maple trees (accordig to Google), there are differet types of commuity baks as well. Frakli Savigs Bak is a idepedet bak with o public shareholders; meaig that we are owed by our customers. Of the 6,000 commuity baks i busiess today, we are oe of just 500 remaiig i the Uited States with this uique structure. Not havig shareholders to satisfy allows us to pla for the log-term success of the bak ad ot just meetig quarterly expectatios. But ow it s time to aswer the questios i the opeig why should ay of this matter to you? Let s begi with a quick fu fact from the history category; Frakli Savigs Bak has bee i busiess sice That meas we ve successfully survived for 147 years through world wars, the Great Depressio, the elimiatio of the poy express, ad the ivetio of the computer. Over the course of this time, our essetial focus has bee o providig fiacial services to the idividuals, families ad busiesses i our commuity, as well as beig a good corporate citize. I fact, that s what commuity baks do; we are here i good times, ad i bad, to serve you. There are coutless examples I could cite to demostrate how we are good corporate citizes ad how we meet our customer s fiacial eeds. For example, I could cite the thousads of hours our employees voluteer each year to help local o-profits, the $900,000 we have give i grats from the Fud for Commuity Advacemet sice its iceptio i 1997, the Scholarship Fud that Frakli Savigs Bak created to support the pursuit of higher educatio by studets i our commuities, our SmileSquad which helps our commuity by Payig it Forward, or the small stuff like sposorig aual Christmas tree lightigs ad Fourth of July fireworks displays. I could eve go o ad talk about the thousads of dollars that Frakli Savigs Bak ivests each year to provide techology solutios, so our customers ca do their bakig aytime, aywhere. I this regard we are ot uique, as there are commuity baks across the coutry doig great thigs for those they serve. However, I m goig to keep it fairly simple ad aswer the questio by askig a questio what would your commuity be like if Frakli Savigs Bak, or your local commuity bak, was t there? What would the small commuities i Maie, Vermot, Iowa ad Idiaa be like without their commuity bak o the corer? I believe that every time a commuity bak is replaced by a mega-bak with its home office either out of state, or out of the coutry, a vital piece of the commuity is lost. Ad do t take my word for it, just ask those who have experieced it. I would be remiss if I did t take this opportuity to thak our customers ad commuity parters for the trust they have placed i Frakli Savigs Bak as a advisor ad parter. 14 The Rest of the Story A14 Sabor FROM PAGE A4 make goverig decisios about local matters ad decide i favor of public safety. Ad so, the vote was postpoed i tows across New Hampshire. Newly elected officials were swor i ad wet about the busiess of servig the public. Local decisio-makig offeds state officials It was logical ad sesible for the public to accept postpoemet of tow electios due to impassable roads ad safety cocers. However, our electio, our votes, ad the legitimacy of our public officials has bee cast ito doubt by state officials who appear offeded that local officials ad ot the cetral govermet apparatus made the call to postpoe. Of course, postpoig electios created some legal ucertaities aroud bod issues ad such, but that was easy eough to remedy with a bill proposed by Seate Miority Leader, Jeff Woodbur. SB 248 was simple, straightforward ad sesible like most Graite Staters. The bill Seator Woodbur proposed would have ratified actios, votes, ad proceedigs of tow ad school district meetigs ad electios postpoed due to the weather emergecy o March 14, Commo sese legislatio with the itet to protect local decisio-makig authority. Seator Woodbur s bill was smothered by the Seate Electio Law Committee whe members ameded it to establish a committee to study the reschedulig of electios. House Speaker s assault o democracy Istead of protectig the actios of local officials ad acceptig the majority vote of towspeople, House Speaker Shaw Jasper has ameded SB 108, assaultig direct democracy i New Hampshire commuities. SB 108 forces voters to hold special electios, at o small cost to our commuities. The special electios require voters i commuities where electio day was postpoed, to ow ratify the votes take o the rescheduled electio dates! That ratificatio wo t take place util May. Meawhile, decisios made by voters at the polls are o hold, their votes vetoed legislatively, their elected officials held i suspeded aimatio. Worst of all, Speaker Jasper s had greade of a amedmet says that if voters i May reject the sow-day results, the all votes cast will be ull ad void, all warrat articles will be deemed to have bee defeated, ad all the positios voted for will be vacat. 20 Sports B6 Haaford sigs o as New Hampshire Maratho title sposor BRISTOL With a geerous $4,000 doatio from store maager Larry Poliqui, Haaford Supermarket i Bristol has become the title sposor for this year s 25th aiversary ruig of the New Hampshire Maratho. The New Hampshire Maratho, first held i 1993 as a sigle race evet ru maily aroud Newfoud Lake, has evolved ito four differet evets: the 26.2-mile maratho, a 13.1-mile half maratho, a 10k race, as well as a kids maratho ru i sectios that fiishes o A ew baseball seaso ad already some storylies O Tap Author to speak at Trout Ulimited meetig FROM PAGE B1 softball teams will be at Pembroke o Friday, April 14, at 4 p.m. ad at Sabor o Moday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m. ad will be hostig Kigswood at 4 p.m. o Wedesday, April 19. The Plymouth boys lacrosse team is scheduled to visit Steves o Friday, April 14, at 4:30 p.m. ad the visit Lacoia o Moday, April 17, at 4 p.m. The Bobcat lacrosse girls will be at Bow at 4:15 p.m. o Friday, April 14, ad will be hostig Lacoia o Tuesday, April 18, at 4 p.m. SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING Aother baseball seaso has begu ad after what seemed like a excitig start took a bit of a tough tur with the first road trip of the seaso for the Red Sox. I m ot goig to lie, I was a bit ervous about the offese give the retiremet of the great David Ortiz. While I m o expert, my cocer lied i the fact that there was a huge hole i the middle of the lieup ad while Mitch Morelad is a decet baseball player, he s ot goig to put up the type of umbers that Big Papi did. Sure, he s boud to be a defesive upgrade whe he s at first ad the Sox might get a bit more out of Haley Ramirez whe he s used more as a DH tha i the field, but replacig David Ortiz umbers is ot easy. Ad through the first four games of the seaso, my cocers were certaily bor out, as there seemed to be a geeral struggle to kock i ruers o base ad put rus o the board. Besides oe iig i each of the first three games whe they scored a umber of rus, the bats were ot doig their job. I fairess, after the first game of the seaso, the team lost a few of its best players to, of all thigs, the flu. Evidetly the illess had bee ruig through the clubhouse durig the ed of sprig traiig ad it carried over ito the regular seaso, kockig out MVP ruer-up Mookie Betts ad Ramirez from the lieup ad also claimig a victim i the bullpe i PLYMOUTH David Va Wie will discuss his recetly published book, The Cofluece - A Collectio of Essays, Art ad Tall Tales about Fly-fishig ad Friedship ( Va Wie was the istigator ad lead author, alog with six close frieds, of the book. Va Wie will Robbie Ross. Deaths i their families took both Matt Bares ad Xader Bogaerts away from the team, weakeig the bullpe ad the lieup yet agai. So, there was a few excuses whe the Sox dropped the first two games i Detroit ad it s early i the seaso, so thigs ca surely pick up. Ad the Red Sox fa i me sure hopes they do. But I m ot sure the explosive offese people were expectig is there. That leads to the pitchig, where the biggest offseaso acquisitio was Chris Sale, who proved he might be the ati-david Price i his first start, despite the fact that he did t get the wi. I was ot impressed with Price last seaso ad was hopig to see a turaroud from him, ala Josh Beckett i his secod year, but he s out share their fishig advetures i a remote cabi at the cofluece of the Dead Diamod ad Swift Diamod Rivers i orther New Hampshire. Va Wie lives i Maie ad writes about outdoor advetures, evirometal issues, ad whatever quirky topics are o his mid ad o his blog, WatchYourBackcast. com. After more tha 30 years workig as a evirometal professioal i govermet, busiess ad cosultig, Va Wie is ow a writer, photographer ad adjuct faculty member at the Uiversity of New Eglad i Biddeford, ad teaches evirometal studies. Come early to the with a ijury ad the startig rotatio is dow a ma. Rick Porcello was fatastic last year ad deservedly wo the Cy Youg for his efforts ad I aticipate he s goig to have aother good seaso. But Eduardo Rodriguez struggled a bit i his first outig of the seaso ad Drew Pomeraz is comig off a ijury, so the depth is wearig thi. I m hopig to see a Kyle Kedrick appearace at some poit, as I thought he deserved a spot after his sprig traiig performace. The bullpe is also a questio mark i my mid, with the two biggest bullpe acquisitios i the last two offseasos, Tyler Thorburg ad Carso Smith, are both sidelied, leavig Joe Kelly as the setup guy i frot of (i my mid) a overrated Craig Kimbrel. If everyoe comes back healthy, I m optimistic, but arm ijuries are tricky thigs for pitchers. That beig said, I predict a solid seaso ad a playoff berth. If everyoe gets healthy, the a ru to the ACS ad the World Series is possible. But oe step at a time. Fially, cogratulatios ad have a great day Tori ad Rob Karstedt.
