1 Lesso Zacchaeus Climbs a Tree to See Jesus Luke 19:1-10 E very Christia struggles i some degree to feel accepted by God. We ted to believe that if we would oly live better, pray loger, serve harder, or preach stroger, God would love ad approve of us more. The truth is God could t love us ay more tha he does ow, or could God love us ay less. God s very ature is to love. Where there is God, there is love. God s love for us is ot depedet upo our performace or our worthiess. Jesus ecouter with Zacchaeus is a woderful affirmatio of this truth. Although we ofte ackowledge God s love i our heads, may adults fid it hard to truly feel loved by God i their hearts. Use this lesso to help adults see that JESUS ACCEPTS EVERYONE o matter what their flaws may be. 3 113 Zacchaeus Climbs a Tree to See Jesus Luke 19:1-10 BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS Chief of the Despised Tax collectors are disliked today, but they were eve more despised by the Jews of Jesus day because they represeted Roma oppressio. Zacchaeus was ot oly a tax collector, but also a chief tax collector, which meat that he dealt ad cotracted directly with the Romas. This would have made him the richest ad the most despised of tax collectors. He would have bee see as a traitor ad as someoe who rejected the Hebrew faith ad God. Few would ve believed that Zacchaeus sis could be forgive. Eve the wives ad childre of such tax collectors would have bee treated poorly by the Jews. It was ot mere chace that Jesus looked away from the throg of people who surrouded him ad looked directly up ito the tree at this seeker who wated to see Jesus for himself. Zacchaeus did t eve have to say aythig whe Jesus spotted him; Jesus already had a pla for Zacchaeus. chaged heart. Jesus declaratio that Zacchaeus had received salvatio cofirmed what had happeed i Zacchaeus heart ad the fact that God would accept eve a despised tax collector if he placed his faith i Jesus! The Jesus Coectio Read this week s Key Verse, Revelatio 3:20. Jesus stads at the door ad kocks ad waits for us to ope up our lives to him. How have you respoded? Thik about the times whe, like Zacchaeus, you ve pursued Jesus eve whe others did t uderstad what you were doig. What kids of reactios did you get? How did Jesus meet you? The take some time to pray about how you eed to see Jesus differetly this week. You ca write your prayer here. A Ulikely Ivitatio Jesus ivitatio to Zacchaeus surprised everyoe. The people were stued that Jesus would ivite himself to the home of someoe like Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was stued for the same reaso! Everyoe would have expected Jesus to avoid associatio with a sier such as this tax collector. But Jesus was t cocered about people s errat expectatios. He was cocered about drawig siful people to faith i him. After spedig some time with Jesus, Zacchaeus was apparetly coviced that Jesus was who he said he was. Some questio if Zacchaeus prooucemet that he would give away his riches idicates he was saved by his good deeds. However, we kow that salvatio is by faith aloe. Thus, Zacchaeus decisio to repay those he had cheated must have bee a result of his trustig i God s grace a proof of a Lesso 12 Witer Quarter

Say: Dow i Whoville that day, a amazig thig happeed. The Grich ecoutered people who celebrated Christmas joyfully, eve though all their gifts ad decoratios had bee stole. They chaged his heart. Whe he retured to Whoville, he was accepted. JESUS ACCEPTS EVERYONE. Few people would ve believed that Zacchaeus sis could be forgive, eve if he wated to chage. Talk With s Lead adults i this discussio. Participats ca fid these questios i their Hadbooks. Ask: What was it about his ecouter with Jesus that chaged Zacchaeus life? Of all of the good people that Jesus passed by, how fair was it for Jesus to reach out to someoe like Zacchaeus? What types of people do you have a hard time acceptig? Who do you thik of as villais people whose actios seem uforgiveable? What does today s passage suggest about Jesus attitude toward those people? Say: Oe of the hardest thigs for us to grasp is the love ad acceptace Christ has for us ad for others, o matter what we or they have doe. But JESUS ACCEPTS EVERYONE. There is so much freedom whe we fially realize that God loves us ucoditioally ad he does the same for everyoe we come i cotact with. Look at the freedom Zacchaeus experieced. If ayoe hears my voice ad opes the door, I will come i ad eat with him, ad he with me. JESUS ACCEPTS EVERYONE. Because of his example, we ca be acceptig ad lovig of everyoe as well. Thik for a momet of someoe you ve had trouble acceptig. It ca be someoe here at church, a relative, a eighbor, or maybe someoe you work with. Give everyoe a momet to thik about that perso. Say: Oe of the hardest thigs for us to grasp is the love ad acceptace Christ has for us ad for others, o matter what we or they have doe. But there is so much freedom whe we see ourselves ad others through God s lovig eyes. Look at the freedom Zacchaeus experieced whe he recogized Jesus acceptace of him!
