" The iput suggests that Bristol will experiece o substatial residetial growth i the ext 25 years ad may eve declie i populatio. At the same time, demographic studies show that the State of New Hampshire has the secod oldest populatio of ay state i the coutry. Bristol already has a populatio which is older tha the state average. There is geeral agreemet that the average age of the populatio of Bristol will be eve older i 25 years." "The average household icome i the State of New Hampshire is approximately $64,000. The average household icome i the Tow of Bristol is approximately $ 38,000. Bristol is ot a affluet commuity. There is o evidece to show that Bristol's relative fiacial ability will substatially chage i 25 years." Most retired people survive o fixed icomes ad therefore caot afford to live i commuities that lack preset ad future fiacial stability. This, coupled with the decliig ecoomic ad demographic coditios i Bristol, despite beig remided of all these facts, the Tow fathers cotiue to favor listeig to liberal speders whom wat to cotiue borrowig ad spedig excessively o projects the Tow caot afford 10 or 20 year term otes o. O the opposite side are those whom urge the Bristol Tow fathers to exercise a more cautious ad realistic approach to these projects ad cite more What-If scearios with the give chages facig the Bristol commuity. Oe such argumet to the Bristol Tow fathers is that If we wat to attract more people to Bristol, we must create reasos for them to wat to move here. To the Editor: Last Wedesday, May 9, library materials i poor coditio were retured to the Miot-Sleeper Library. These items were i plastic bags. After examiatio, the staff decided to retur may of these items to the bags util Brittay Overto, the Library Director, retured to the Library o Friday. O Friday, May 11, Brittay ad the staff determied that the materials showed evidece of bugs (later idetified as bed bugs) ad their fecal material. She cotacted Nacy Dowey, Vice Chair of the Library Board of Trustees, ad alerted her to the issue. It was discovered that a umber of other books ad DVDs had bee borrowed ad likely subjected to the source of the bugs durig the previous moths, ad that these items eeded to be examied. Brittay ad Nacy decided to close the Library ad cotacted two extermiatio compaies. Oe of the compaies set a represetative o Saturday morig, May 12 ad spet a hour with Brittay ad Nacy examiig the materials, ad aswerig their questios. The represetative idetified them as bed bugs ad determied that there was o risk to the public at that time. Ultimately, the staff idetified ad bagged all the books ad DVDs that had bee borrowed ad retured calmer erichmet to her life- we kow that The precipice of chage permaet home is just aroud the corer! Mittes arrived i Jue 2017, she s a logstayer i shelter parlace, but that should ot deter you: prospective adopter, from cosiderig her for your ext pet if at the top of your Wats List is must be affectioate, sweet ad oe that purrs, costatly. Call or check Why ot show them that we are a forward lookig commuity, istead of actig like dead fruit witherig o the vie just waitig to fall off? The commuity must egage itself i costructig a proactive ageda. This ageda will the act as a road map to guide the Tow alog that path of chage. To be a proactive commuity, oe that takes early actio to effect positive chages to, ad for our commuity; ot a commuity that reacts to chages after they have already occurred. We must be willig to look iward to ourselves hoestly, assess accurately, face the facts, develop situatio awareess, ad develop a pla for the future that adapts the aforemetioed ito the developmet of a comprehesive tow model for the future. This model must be revisited o a ogoig basis ad must be flexible eough to adapt to chages occurrig from withi our ow commuity, as well as from outside. If the Tow of Bristol does ot hoestly recogize that aual icreases i Taxes to pay for uwarrated wated budget items, ot realistic eeded budget items, will ot make Bristol a desirable place to live; but istead cotiue to drive people away from Bristol as they have for the last 15 years ad Bristol ca cotiue to declie ad slip ito ultimate fiacial rui. The facts speak for themselves. Tow fathers must modify its outdated way of doig busiess ad ot be misguided by the wats of a few. The willy-illy misguided maagemet techiques of the past will ever usher Bristol ito a bright future. If the Tow of Bristol wats to address the future of Bristol, it must first begi to liste, face facts, freeze taxes, embrace austerity, ad gover itelligetly ad resposibly. The it must desig ad develop a pla that meets the commuity's future eeds, commit to it, ad the execute it. Bristol eeds ew stewardship, coupled with real leadership to guide it ito the future if it wats to survive. If ot properly ourished, Bristol will wither o the vie as other commuities have. The clock is tickig, ad the time is ow. The Tow of Bristol is perched o the precipice of chage! Need to ispect collectio prompted closure of Miot-Sleeper Library from the cotamiated source ad removed them from the Library. Some materials were borrowed by other patros after they had bee cotamiated. Brittay has bee cotactig these patros to alert them to the situatio. We have bee told there is very little threat that the items borrowed by other patros will cause dramatic spread of the bugs, but we felt it was importat for these patros to be aware. Those who still had books or DVDs i their possessio were asked to bag them ad dispose of them. The Trustees ad staff take the safety of our patros very seriously ad will cotiue to moitor the Library ad library materials. We are workig with the Tow Health Officer who has bee i touch with the State Public Health Departmet ad they have also assured us that the risk to public safety is egligible. We are workig with the Health Officer to develop a protocol to deal with icidets like this i the future. I the meatime, we are happy to aswer ay questios the public may have. We have ot yet determied how the materials will be replaced, but our itetio is to rebuild the collectio as soo as possible. Miot-Sleeper Library Board of Trustees Bristol Erik R. Nelso Bristol

5 Public Televisio carried a feature o Theodore Roosevelt this past Suday. He is my favorite Presidet, chiefly because he became a ardet coservatioist ad was largely resposible for what lads i the West we have left. This geerally meas lads free of exploitatio or developmet. I m ot sure whether the bargai-basemet gratig of grazig permits costitutes exploitatio. But the, what about log-rage hikes ad raftig vetures, ad pack-horse hutig trips? If there is a Presidet history has doe a disservice, it is Roosevelt. Most Americas, if they ca remember him at all, seem oly to remember big game safaris. Today, it s hard to imagie a world that would have the room or the patiece for a Teddy Roosevelt. Imagie a Presidet takig off for a moth for a campig trip i the Rockies, or lettig the White House law be home to poies ad goats. However, TR was a eergetic guy, boucig ad bellowig his way aroud the White House like a top-hatted Tigger, ad the documetary shamed me ito gettig up out of my livig room chair (Commad Cetral, with everythig that matters withi reach), ad goig outside for a tour of the immediate premises, my logest trip o crutches yet. I ecourage you to review the NORTH COUNTRY NOTEBOOK By JOHN HARRIGAN BY LARRY SCOTT It was oo-time oe day i the early 1970 s. I ca still remember walkig ito the Perki s Restaurat i Wormleysburg, Pa. for a logplaed visit with Susa. Susa was ot a active Christia at the time. As we sat dow ad ordered breakfast, I said to her, Susa, I kow you have a church backgroud, but I have suspicios that you leared the priciples of our faith i bits ad pieces ad have ever had ayoe take the time to brig it all together. I would like to put the puzzle together, ok? Susa, I said, the Bible clearly tells us that all have sied ad are i eed of divie forgiveess if we are to develop ay kid of a relatioship with God. We are three-part beigs body, soul (our itellect ad will), ad a spirit. What happeed to each of us is perhaps best uderstood if we go back to the Garde of Ede for a quick overview. God told Eve that, of all the trees i the Garde, there was oe that was off limits, the tree of the Kowledge of Good ad Evil. If either she or Adam ate the fruit of that tree, God promised they would surely die. They did but they did t drop dead. What happeed was that their spirit, that itimate part i each of us that becomes our poit of cotact with God, ceased to be fuctioal. Although they remaied physically ad itellectually healthy, they died spiritually, lost the warm fellowship they had ejoyed with God, ad were expelled from the Garde of Ede. But God still loved them ad very much wated to re-establish the relatioship. The problem was that si s pealty is death eteral separatio from God ad was somethig God himself could ot accept. Accordigly, he set his So, Jesus Christ, to die o their behalf. No oe else, ot Abraham or Moses or Kig David etc., could die o their behalf because each of them, like you ad me, had sied ad were uder the pealty of death for their ow si. Good works could t cut it for it did othig to take care of the si problem. But Jesus was perfect, so he could die o our behalf. The crucifixio of our Lord was ot a miscarriage of justice; it took place by divie desig. Whe he prayed (while o the cross), Father forgive them, he was prayig for you ad me. Divie forgiveess is available to each of us. Cadidate statemets that accompaied your ballot, reach out to the Cadidates if you have ay questios ad vote. This is your Coop ad your Board of Directors. The Directors ot oly oversee the Co-op s operatios, they also set the rates members pay ad pla for your Co-op s future. Joa Aubrey Director New Hampshire Electric Cooperative, Ic. Seiors ad Blood Pressure Maagemet BY MARTHA SWATS Ower/Admiistrator Comfort Keepers The Silet Killer It may be surprisig to realize that early half of all U.S. adults have high blood pressure (or hypertesio). It s especially cocerig cosiderig that high blood pressure cotributes sigificatly to the risk of health coditios that thousads face each year, such as heart attack, stroke, chroic heart failure, ad kidey disease. Ad because those with high blood pressure ted ot to have ay symptoms, the disease is ofte referred to as the silet killer. Blood pressure ca icrease for those of ay age, but adults age 65 ad older ted to be at greater risk of high blood pressure because of structural chages to the arteries. Fortuately, educatio aroud blood pressure seems to be makig a impact; the Ceters for Disease Cotrol ad Prevetio (CDC) otes that there has bee a gradual icrease i the umber of older adults who have received treatmet for high blood pressure sice The key to maagig high blood pressure for these idividuals was havig their blood pressure checked frequetly. But what exactly costitutes ormal blood pressure for seiors? What Is Cosidered Normal? High blood pressure was, for may years, treated at 140/90mm Hg, but just last year, the America College of Cardiology (ACC) released ew guidelies that cosider 130/80 to be high. While these ew guide- lies were put i place to help treat high blood pressure earlier, some i the medical commuity feel that it may be harder to apply directly to seiors, who, as metioed, already have higher blood pressure levels tha youger adults. Treatig the matter as black ad white may ot be realistic. For istace BY MARK PATTERSON As a registered ivestmet advisory firm that specializes i asset maagemet, I ca tell you that most ivestmet portfolios that are brought to my firm for review are very similar. I believe these similar portfolios are desiged based o a model that the broker-dealer firm has desiged to match up to a risk questioaire that the cliet has probably respoded to. It is very likely that the fiacial advisor who oversees the relatioship betwee the cliet ad the broker-dealer is required to fill out a risk questioaire ad apply the mutual fuds or exchage traded fuds that match the risk profile of the cliet. The major flaw with this model is this; the risk profile of the cliet does ot ecessarily yield a portfolio that meets their objectives. If the cliet is tellig me that their objective ad eed is icome, I am goig to desig the portfolio to give my cliet steady, sustaiable, predictable icome. If my cliet does t ecessarily eed icome but wats growth, they are goig to get a portfolio of ivestmets that are desiged more for growth tha icome. It is very simplistic to fill out a risk questioaire ad desig a model portfolio based o your cliet s aswers. While this type of questioaire may satisfy the broker-dealers compliace departmet, it does ot, i my opiio, aswer the questio, what is the purpose of this moey? I the past, I ve writte about the trasitio from the accumulatio of assets durig the first 50 years of oe s workig life. As we approach retiremet or eve a time whe we are ot makig moey, but startig to rely o our accumulated assets for steady sustaiable predictable icome. Asset preservatio becomes eve more critical i this period. I the retail brokerage world, assets are shifted to more coservative bod mutual fuds that have a differet kid of risk ad away from stocks or equities that bear market risk. You simply caot structure a steady sustaiable stream of icome usig bod fuds. Bod fuds caot maage iterest rate risk that i fact could be a lowerig a seior s blood pressure, whe uecessary, ca dramatically icrease seiors risk of fallig. Coversely, oe study showed that frail seiors may actually beefit from a slightly higher blood pressure level to help facilitate costat blood flow. By ACC stadards, blood pressure lower tha 120/80 is still cosidered ideal, but physicias should cosider all aspects of a seior s wellbeig before settig out to reach this goal. Cardiovascular health is a extraordiarily importat part of our overall health, but it should ot be maaged i a silo. Seiors SEE BLOOD PRESSURE, PAGE A12 MARK ON THE MARKETS Covictio ad purpose very substatial risk.
