3 77 Peter ad Adrew Meet Jesus Joh 1:35-42 BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS Jesus Begis His Miistry The disciple of Joh the Baptist who is uamed i this passage was likely Joh, the author of this Gospel. This uamed disciple ad Adrew had bee followig Joh the Baptist, but at this poit they bega to follow Jesus. Joh the Baptist did t try to persuade the two to stay with him. He kew his place ad was ready for his disciples to trasfer their allegiace to Jesus. Jesus Gives a Ivitatio The first of Jesus words that are recorded by Joh are foud i Joh 1:38: What do you wat? he asked Joh s disciples. Jesus questio is sigificat: He kew these me were lookig for somethig, ot really for someoe. They respoded to Jesus with their ow questio: Where are you stayig? O the surface this questio may have idicated that they eeded to kow where Jesus lived if they were to come to him for teachig. Jesus respose to that questio did t give them the aswer they may have wated; it was a immediate ivitatio for them to follow ad lear from him. He did t say, Come tomorrow, or I ll meet you at the boat dock. Istead he immediately opeed up himself ad the place he was stayig to these first two disciples. Jesus earthly miistry, Peter displayed little of the stregth ad stability of a rock, however. He was impulsive ad impetuous, ad i his haste, he ofte made bad decisios. So the ame that Jesus gave Peter was ot based o his life up to that poit, but o who Jesus kew Peter would become as a result of followig Jesus. Whe Peter got to kow Jesus, his life chaged. He evetually became a ew perso; empowered by his faith i Christ, he dedicated his life to spreadig the word about Jesus to the world. The Jesus Coectio Jesus kows us eve better tha we kow ourselves. Thak Jesus ot oly for beig your Savior but also for beig your fried! Thik about the time you first met Jesus. How have you grow closer to him sice the? What room for growth do you still see i your friedship with him? Over the ext week, ask God to help you grow closer to Jesus. You ca write your prayer here. Jesus Chages Lives After spedig a day with Jesus, Adrew kew he had foud somethig special his first respose was to fid his brother Simo ad tell him he d foud the Messiah. I characteristic fashio, Simo respoded quickly ad wet with Adrew to meet Jesus. For Jesus, the So of God, it took oly oe look at Simo to kow who he was ad who he was to become. So he gave Simo a ew ame, Peter, which meas rock. At that momet ad throughout Preschool/Ages 3 & 4 Lesso 7 Witer Quarter
