3 137 Jesus Heals the Blid Ma Mark 10:46-52 BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS Blid Bartimaeus Cries Out to Jesus for Healig Leavig Jericho o his way to Jerusalem, Jesus had gathered a crowd. Bartimaeus blidess did t prevet him from hearig the ruckus of the approachig crowd ad from askig who was creatig all the fuss. Whe he foud out, his cries of So of David i addressig Jesus were ot just a way of idetifyig Jesus lieage. Sice the term So of David is clearly a referece to the Messiah, Bartimaeus was shoutig both to the crowd ad to Jesus that he believed Jesus was the promised Messiah. Although Jesus was surrouded by a crowd ad was set o reachig his destiatio, his ears ad heart were attued to the cry of oe callig out for mercy. Bartimaeus eeded Jesus mercy, ad Jesus heard his cry. because of aythig good we ve doe or ay specific set of words we repeat. Jesus shows us he cares for us by takig care of our eeds as we ackowledge our depedece o him ad trust i him to meet those eeds. Ad what Jesus asks i retur is that we do as Bartimaeus did ad follow Jesus alog the roads of our lives, o matter how old or youg we may be. The Jesus Coectio Do you have a good fried who you usually talk to about your problems? Jesus is the ultimate fried. As Bartimaeus leared, we ca cry out i faith whe we eed Jesus help! Ad we ca have faith i Jesus to meet our eeds i oe way or aother. Pray hoestly about your eeds, ad the focus o the reasos you have faith i Jesus to help you, heal you, or simply hear you. You ca write your prayer here. Bartimaeus Hails Jesus as the So of David I ackowledgig Bartimaeus idetificatio of him as the So of David, Jesus was also makig a statemet. Earlier i his miistry, he d avoided beig idetified as the Messiah. But ow, as he was makig his last trip to Jerusalem, where he would be crucified, he was ready for his idetity to be kow. Bartimaeus Faith Iitiates the Healig Notice that Bartimaeus faith i Jesus iitiated his healig. Jesus did t say, Because you ve lived a good life i spite of your hardship, I ll heal you. He did t say, Because your parets were so faithful to me, I ll give you your sight. Jesus respoded to Bartimaeus faith. Thigs have t chaged. Jesus respods to our eeds o the basis of our faith, ot Lesso 13 Witer Quarter

Poor Bart held out his hads, askig for moey from the people passig by. Moey, please! he shouted. Moey, please, for a poor, blid ma. But most people just passed Bart by. Some of the people gave him moey as they passed. Others had o moey to spare but gave him high fives. Still others just walked by with their oses i the air ad igored him. Bart hated askig people for moey, but he had o other way to get moey for food, clothig, or a place to live. Fially, late i the day, Bart heard a large crowd shoutig, Jesus is comig! over ad over. Bart heard loud stompig footsteps ad souds of laughter. Jesus really was comig! With Jesus out i frot of the crowd, all the people came, leapig ad clappig! Bart was excited like the rest, so he cupped his hads ad bega callig out to Jesus, Jesus, So of David, have mercy o me! People i the crowd did t like how Bart was shoutig to Jesus. They rubbed their chis ad crossed their arms. Who does this beggar thik he is, callig for Jesus attetio? they asked. The people held their figers up to their lips ad shh d Bart ad told him to be quiet! Jesus suddely stopped ad held out his arms to getly quiet the crowd. He poited to Bart ad said, Call him. Everyoe was surprised that Jesus wated to talk with Bart he was just a blid beggar. But they waved their arms at Bart. Cheer up! O your feet! they cried. He s callig you. Bart could t believe it! He was so excited, he threw his coat aside ad jumped up. The, with arms held out i frot of him, he ra to Jesus. Lesso 13 Witer Quarter

6 140 Jesus took Bart s had ad looked at him. Jesus asked, What do you wat me to do for you? Bart lowered his head ad aswered Jesus. Rabbi, I wat to see, Bart said. The Jesus said ad did somethig very amazig. Jesus said, Go, your faith has healed you. The people all started whisperig to each other i surprise. Bart slowly opeed his eyes. He bliked ad bliked. At first, Bart had to shield his eyes from the bright sulight. But whe Bart realized that Jesus had healed him ad that he could actually see, he started leapig ad jumpig with joy. I m healed! I m healed! Thak you, Jesus, he cried. Thak you, Jesus! Everyoe i the crowd got excited, too. The people bega to joi hads, dacig ad shoutig, Jesus is great! Jesus is great! Bart followed Jesus as they walked alog the road together. Talk With Kids Lead childre i this discussio. Ask: What actios that you did i this activity seemed to show Bart s faith to you? Why do you thik Bart s faith was importat? What are some ways to act like someoe who has faith i Jesus? How does your faith i Jesus help you? Say: Jesus told Bart that his faith healed him. The fact is, Jesus loved Bart ad wated to care for him, o matter what. But Bart had a faith i Jesus that was so strog that he did whatever he could to get to Jesus. WE HAVE FAITH IN JESUS, too. Ad whe we have thigs we eed Jesus to care for, we ca be bold ad go to Jesus, too, because we have faith that he ll take care of us. The Meaig of Mercy Supplies Bibles CD player copies of the lyrics page (at the ed of the lesso) Teacher Pack CD: Because of His Mercy (Titus 3:5a) (track 25) The Meaig of Mercy What You ll Do Say: Bart was just a poor, blid beggar sittig by the side of the road askig people for moey. Jesus was busy ad had lots of people crowdig aroud him. He did t have to take the time to help a poor guy like Bart. But he did. Thik about someoe who s helped you, but did t have to maybe someoe who s very busy or someoe who seems very importat. Allow time; the ivite kids to share. Say: Jesus always took time to help ad pay attetio to people, eve though he s God. Ad he s always payig attetio to us, too. Our Key Verse tells us why. Help kids fid Titus 3:5 i their Bibles. The read aloud: ot because of righteous thigs we had doe, but because of his mercy (Titus 3:5). Have kids repeat the verse with you several times. Say: There was othig so woderful about Bart to make Jesus stop ad pay attetio to him. It s just like our Key Verse says: Jesus did t help Bart because of the righteous, or good, thigs Bart had doe. After all, Bart was just a beggar! Jesus helped Bart because he had mercy for him. To have mercy meas to show kidess ad extra-special care to someoe. Jesus cared so much for Bart that he was willig to stop what he was doig ad heal him right o the spot! Witer Quarter Lesso 13
