10 Busiess/The rest of the story A10 MARK ON THE MARKETS Pricipal protectio BY MARK PATTERSON Dec. 2, 2001 through Dec. 2, 2011 is kow as the lost decade to stock market ivestors. If you had ivested $10,000 i 2001 ad did ot take profits at ay time whe they may have bee available durig that period, you would have $10,000 i I recall that period of time very well because it demaded a lot of work to make moey for cliets. It was also a period of time whe it paid to be a stock picker as opposed to a idex or mutual fud ivestor. There was moey to be made if you chose stocks that you did ot marry ad were willig to take a reasoable profit. Three ad half years after the gettig eve poit, it seems that the markets have placed people back ito that complacet trace that really worries the cotraria ad sometimes pessimistic side of my brai. Over the past few moths, I have attempted to touch o ivestmet maagemet topics like Mutual fuds vs. Exchage traded fuds, usig optio cotracts for icome ad hedgig, auities that are tied to a idex that ca provide dowside protectio ad lifetime icome, Idexed uiversal life isurace that is also tied to a variety of idices; that has market loss protectio ad tax free icome ad a death beefit. Ay or all of these strategies ca work to protect what you have accumulated ad to icrease icome from your ivestmets. The key is fidig the right mix for your fiacial situatio ad risk tolerace. Assessig risk tolerace is ot as easy as askig a few questios ad puttig check marks i the box ext to a multiple choice respose. My belief is that all cliets are risk adverse util they ca prove otherwise. What I mea by that is; expectatios must be reasoable to meet, based o the ivestable assets ad age of the cliet. If a cliet truly has assets over ad above what they eed to sustai a comfortable life style, the we ca stretch for additioal yield. A difficult situatio is whe the cliet eeds to take o too much risk because they do ot have sufficiet assets to sustai that lifestyle. Retiremet ad Social Security Plaig sooer, tha later, ca make a big differece with the cliet s retiremet icome. Log term care, life isurace or other types of asset preservatio tools are much cheaper ad attaiable the youger you are. Log term care, i my opiio is very importat for a certai asset level or family health history, but may ot be the best product for may people. There are some hybrid life isurace policies that may be a better fit. It depeds o the cliets specific eeds. The message I wat to covey is simple: Protect the pricipal ad assets that you have acquired, especially if you are earig or have etered retiremet. Eve if you pla o workig ad ivestig for te or more years loger, aother lost decade may be lurkig aroud the corer. This drug is highly effective i keepig folks alive util they fid recovery. Somethig, he added, they must all do i their ow time. Spofford hopes the state s ew Frieds ad Family Access to Naloxoe bill, siged i July to allow for the dispesatio of the drug to the public, will keep more people alive. Others o the pael last week were Traci Fowler, who chairs the Prevetio Task Force of N.H. Goveror s Commissio o Drug ad Alcohol Abuse; Michael Bulleck, local pharmacist ad vice presidet of the N.H. The other stuff icludes the LED lightig that is plaed ad a fece to keep people off the jump whe it is ot i use. Leaha said he has bee especially impressed with the fudraisig to date. That s probably the best I ve see i my 40- plus years, he said of the effort Johstoe is leadig. This is a A+ effort to date. But we do have to get somethig doe (costructio) before we re doe with the fudraisig, Johstoe added. All three members of the group ote that the kids have gotte ivolved i helpig to save their jump. Johstoe has two kids o the jumpig team ad LeBlac s so has take over for his father as the school s ski coach, so they all have coectios to the program. A total of 22 people meet each week as a committee to pla the ext steps. The kids are motivated too, Johstoe said. The coaches are gettig the etire ski team to help out, Leaha added. There are so may people doig so much, they re comig out of the woodwork. The group otes that may of the people offerig a had have either had kids who jumped for the team, curretly have kids o the team or have kids comig through the schools that wat to see their kids jump. 17 Sports B3 JOSHUA SPAULDING FISH AND GAME S Be Nuget shows a salmo to some yougsters durig Salmo Suday i Tuftoboro. JOSHUA SPAULDING FISH AND GAME employees show off some of the salmo from the waters of the Melvi River o Suday. JOSHUA SPAULDING JOHN VIAR ad Be Nuget of the Fish ad Game Departmet allowed some yougsters o the platform i the river to lear about salmo strippig. Salmo Suday brigs crowd to Pope Dam BY JOSHUA SPAULDING Sports Editor TUFTONBORO Every year, salmo are pulled out of the waters of Lake Wiipesaukee by aglers. But the process that gets them to that spot is a log oe. O Suday, Nov. 8, Fish ad Game staff showed off the process that is used to help keep New Hampshire s ladlocked salmo populatio healthy. The aual Salmo Suday program draws may people to Pope Dam i Melvi Village to take a look at this uique process. The Fish ad Game Departmet has bee holdig the evet sice the 1950s. The evet o Suday was strictly for show for those i attedace, as the actual process show is doe uder more cotrolled surroudigs, oted Fish ad Game s Joh Viar. This is doe to maximize the exposure to the public, Viar said as he moved aroud a platform ear Pope Dam i the Melvi River, just up stream from the shores of Lake WIipesaukee. Every year, the New Hampshire Fish ad Game Departmet collects eggs from female salmo ad fertilizes them with milt from female salmo, allowig the departmet to produce the fish ecessary for the stockig program Fish ad Game rus each year. The reaso for the salmo maagemet program is the simple fact that there is a lack of suitable spawig habitat, which prevets eough atural reproductio of ladlocked salmo to meet fishig demad. So, hatchery-reared fish are required, so Fish ad Game collects eggs ad milt from local fish, rather tha purchasig from aother source, keepig costs dow. Salmo ormally would spaw i rivers ad streams with good flows ad gravel-type bottoms that eter ito Lake Wiipesaukee. However, most of the suitable rivers i the area are dammed close to the lake, limitig the amout of suitable spawig habitat. Viar poited out that the fish that the departmet worked with o Suday came from Lake Wiipesaukee, with a et ear Melvi wharf ad the fish were brought to the site o Thursday. Oce the fish are captured, a biologist will hold the fish by the tail with oe had ad they strokes the uderside of the fish, from the head toward the tail. This forces eggs out of the females ad milt out of the males. A few drops of milt ca fertilize a large umber of eggs. The eggs ad milt are the combied i a dry basi util the milt is distributed evely. The eggs are the washed off to remove excess milt, which would cause the eggs to become sticky ad adhere to each other. The fertilized eggs are the allowed to absorb water ad harde for 24 hours. Oce the eggs are fertilized, they are icubated at Powder Mill JOSHUA SPAULDING FISH AND GAME workers are surrouded by iterested olookers durig Salmo Suday i Tuftoboro. Fish Hatchery i New Durham util the hatch i late February. The fish are raised there util they are about a year ad a half old ad are the stocked each sprig i various lakes aroud the state. Viar poited out that oe of the mai reasos for doig the fertilizatio i the cotrolled eviromet is to keep the eggs from beig exposed to UV rays. The fertilized eggs show o Suday i Tuftoboro were released ito the river ad Viar poited out that they could very well produce fish o their ow. The fish are just fie after the process ad are released ito the river ad head back to the waters of Lake Wiipesaukee by swimmig dow the river. Every year, the Fish ad Game Departmet stocks 23,000 fish ad there are about 50,000 salmo i Lake Wiipesaukee. Fish ad Game s Be Nuget poited out to spectators as they watched the process, that he could tell how old the fish are by a simple look at the fis. We clip a differet fi every year whe we stock them, Nuget said. That way we ca tell how old they are. He poited to a area where a fi had started to grow back ad oted the fish he was holdig at that momet was three years old. Oce the Fish ad Game employees had demostrated the process umerous times, with three other employees wadig i the water ad ettig the fish for them, they ivited yougsters (ad the youg at heart) to climb dow o to the platform i the river to take part i the process.
