55 Jesus Tells About the Good Samarita Luke 10:25-37 BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS Two Questios, Oe Story Importat Coclusios Jesus told the story of the good Samarita i respose to a questio from a Jewish teacher of the Law. The trip from Jerusalem to Jericho was about 17 miles ad icluded a descet of more tha 3,000 feet. The rocky terrai provided may places for badits to hide ad ambush solitary travelers. I the story, the ma o this jourey was attacked by robbers ad left for dead. Because Jesus was speakig to a Jewish audiece, they would ve made the assumptio that the ma was a Jew. The idetities of the three me who came alog are sigificat. A priest was cosidered to be a represetative of God. A parallel today might be a pastor someoe ivolved i committed service to God. A Levite was someoe who assisted the priest still a spiritual perso, but i a layperso s role. Samaritas were despised by Jews because of their heritage. Differet Resposes This story reveals several truths: God expects us to treat all people with love ad compassio, o matter who they are, what race they are, or where they are from. Love requires actios, ot just words. Ad sometimes those actios will cost us, just as the Samarita s eighborly actios cost him. The Jesus Coectio Eve greater tha the good Samarita s kidess, Jesus kidess chages our lives forever. Thik about how God has show you mercy. How have those experieces affected you? God wats to save us through the sacrifice of his So, but he also wats us to show others his mercy through our acts of kidess. I prayer, cosider some ways you ca be a good eighbor by commuicatig God s message of mercy to others through your actios. You ca write your prayer here. The priest might have bee afraid of beig attacked by the same robbers. Or perhaps he did t wat to become uclea by touchig a bloody body. The Levite did essetially the same thig as the priest, likely for the same reasos. Fially, the Samarita stopped to help, ad he also made sure the ma would be take care of as he healed. The two silver cois the Samarita gave the ikeeper were about two days wages likely eough to pay for lodgig for several weeks. Plus, the Samarita promised to stop by o his retur trip ad take care of ay additioal expeses. Grades 3 & 4 Lesso 5 Sprig Quarter
56 GETTING STARTED The Nicest Thig What You ll Do Welcome kids warmly as they arrive, ad ask them how their week wet. Have kids form pairs ad take turs tellig their parters, The icest thig ayoe ever did for me was ad fiishig the setece. Next have them take turs tellig, The icest thig I ever did for ayoe was ad fiishig the setece. After pairs have shared, have each pair choose which ice thig to act out, without speakig, for the rest of the group. Have the rest of the kids guess the actio by sayig, The icest thig ayoe ever did was ad the amig the actio. Talk With Kids Lead kids i this discussio. Good Sam Relay Supplies Bibles Bible Truth Sleuth pes Teacher Pack Good Sam cards Good Sam Relay Easy Prep Tear out the Lesso 5 pages from each Bible Truth Sleuth studet book. Tear apart the Good Sam cards ad shuffle them. Put the cards i four stacks, makig sure that oe of the four Samarita cards is i each stack. Ask: What s it like whe someoe does somethig kid for you? What are the rewards for you whe you do somethig kid for someoe else? What makes you wat to be kid to others? What makes you sometimes ot wat to be kid? Say: I today s Bible passage, we ll lear about a ma who stopped to help someoe who was hurt ad eeded help. We ll talk about what it meas to be kid, compassioate, ad forgivig, ad we ll discover that JESUS SAYS TO LOVE OTHERS AS OURSELVES. 2 BIBLE EXPLORATION Good Sam Relay Tip If you have a small group, remove all but oe of the Samarita cards from the deck. The have oly oe child be the ma from Jerusalem, ad have the rest of the group cotiue to choose cards util you come to the Samarita card. Sprig Quarter Lesso 5 Grades 3 & 4
57 What You ll Do Say: Our Bible passage today is about Jesus story of the good Samarita. Let s take a look at the story by playig a game to lear more about the people i it. But first, let s talk about why Jesus told this story. The Bible says a expert i the law wated to test Jesus. The law expert kew he eeded to love his eighbor, but asked Jesus who his eighbor was. It s at this poit that Jesus told him a story. Let s play it out. Ask for a willig child to be the Ikeeper. Have him or her stad i a area desigated as the i. Each group will try to get their Ma From Jerusalem to this area. Have the rest of the kids form four groups. Oe child i each group will be the Ma From Jerusalem. Have the Ma From Jerusalem i each group walk from oe side of the room to the ext. Say: Jesus said the ma from Jerusalem fell ito the hads of robbers who beat him, took his clothes, ad wet away, leavig him half dead. Have the kids who play the Ma From Jerusalem act out beig beate up, ad the sit or lie i a row i the middle of the room. Set the four stacks of Good Sam cards o the floor. Have each group stad behid a pile of cards. Oe child i each group will draw a card, all at the same time. If the card says Priest, the child will ru to ad aroud that group s Ma From Jerusalem ad the get back i lie. Likewise, if the card says Levite, the child will ru to ad aroud his or her Ma From Jerusalem ad get back i lie. Kids will cotiue doig this util someoe draws the Samarita card. The all group members will escort their Ma From Jerusalem to the Ikeeper. After all groups have each take their Ma From Jerusalem to the i, have kids sit together. Have kids fid parters ad tur to the This Is Love activity o their Bible Truth Sleuth pages. Have Bibles available for kids to share, ad distribute pes to each child. Say: With your parter, look up Luke 10:30-35 ad look at each of the people i Jesus parable show o your Bible Truth Sleuth page. Based o what you read, write oe word or a setece to describe how each perso s choices did or did t show love. Give pairs several miutes to write about each of the people i the parable. Whe kids have fiished, ask for willig childre to share what they wrote about the choices of each of the people. Talk With Kids Lead kids i this discussio. Ask: What was it like to act like the Priest ad Levite i the relay? What was it like to be the ijured ma from Jerusalem? What ca you lear from the Samarita s actios? What are some ways you show compassio to others, like the Samarita did? Grades 3 & 4 Lesso 5 Sprig Quarter
58 Say: Let s see what Jesus said about this. Read aloud Luke 10:36-37 to the whole group. Say: Jesus told the parable of the good Samarita to help us uderstad what it meas to show compassio. He could have simply said, Hey, everyoe be ice already. Istead, he told a powerful story to show us what God s love looks like: JESUS SAYS TO LOVE OTHERS AS OURSELVES. Let s take a look at ways we ca do that. 3 WEAVING FAITH INTO LIFE My Neighbors Supplies CD player slips of paper pes hat adhesive badages tape copies of the lyrics page (at the ed of this lesso) Teacher Pack CD: Love Is (1 Corithias 13:4-5) (track 14) My Neighbors poster My Neighbors Easy Prep Hag the My Neighbors poster where kids ca reach all parts of it. Put umbers i a hat to correspod with the umbers o the pictures. My Neighbors What You ll Do Have kids fid ew parters. Gather kids aroud the My Neighbors poster, ad poit out the hat with the umbers i it. Say: I your pairs, come up to the hat ad draw oe umber per pair. The come up to the poster ad fid the umbered picture that matches the umber you ve picked. After kids have foud their correspodig pictures, have oe parter role-play the perso i the picture. The other parter will role-play how to act like a good Samarita toward that perso. For example, if a pair draws the umber that correspods to the picture showig a elderly woma strugglig to carry groceries, the first child would act out how that woma is strugglig ad what she might eed. Her eed might be as simple as I sure wish I had someoe to help me carry these grocery bags. The the secod child will come alog ad help. Ask pairs to act out their scees for the rest of the group. Thak everyoe for their participatio. Say: I our Bible passage, Jesus wated the teacher to kow what love i actio looked like. That s why he told the story of the good Samarita istead of just tellig the teacher what to do. That s why we looked at helpig people who might be i similar situatios as o our My Neighbors poster. Let s remember what love is by sigig a sog that tells us. Pass out copies of the lyrics, ad play Love Is (1 Corithias 13:4-5) (track 14 o the CD). After they liste oce, have kids sig alog ad do the motios. Love is patiet, (pat a eighbor s back) Love is kid, (keep pattig) Sprig Quarter Lesso 5 Grades 3 & 4

Ask: What does it mea to love the people i the pictures of our My Neighbors poster? How ca you offer love to someoe who might be i the same situatios as the people o the poster? What would make it sometimes hard to show love to people? Give each child a adhesive badage ad a pe. Say: We re goig to commit to showig love to someoe. O your badage, write the ame of someoe you re goig to show love to i a specific way this week. For example, maybe you ll let your brother play your favorite video game first. Or maybe at recess you ll play with someoe who s usually left out. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you re puttig someoe else s eeds first. Give kids about two miutes to commit to lovig someoe this week. Ask kids to put their badages i a place that will remid them of their commitmets. The ask kids to pray for their parters, askig God to help them remember to love others. Say: JESUS SAYS TO LOVE OTHERS AS OURSELVES. That meas we should thik of them i the same way as we thik about ourselves, puttig their eeds first. The pictures o our My Neighbors poster give just a few of the situatios where we ca show compassio. Whe we show acts of compassio ad love, we become more like Christ. 8 60 Just as i Christ Just as i Christ Supplies Bibles idex cards pes What You ll Do Give each child two idex cards ad a pe, ad have everyoe sit i a circle. Make sure every child has a Bible. Have kids ope their Bibles to Ephesias 4:32, ad together read the verse aloud: Be kid ad compassioate to oe aother, forgivig each other, just as i Christ God forgave you (Ephesias 4:32). Say: Sometimes whe we hear words like that from the Bible, we kow i geeral what to do. But let s get more specific with how you ca be kid, compassioate, ad forgivig. The woderful thig about kidess, compassio, ad forgiveess is that they reach their fullest value whe we re able to both give ad receive them. Have kids write kidess/compassio o oe of their cards, ad the have them write a way someoe has show them kidess make sure it s somethig kids do t mid sharig. The have them pass the idex card to the perso o the left. Kids will read their ew idex cards, add aother example, ad cotiue passig them util the idex cards are full. Repeat the activity with the topic of forgiveess. Talk With Kids Lead kids i this discussio. Ask: What was it like to keep o passig alog kidess ad forgiveess? Whe has someoe else s kidess or forgiveess to you ecouraged you to pass it o? What are some ways to show kidess or compassio for someoe who s hurtig? Say: Today we ve looked at Jesus powerful story of the good Samarita. Jesus story shows us what it really looks like to love others with kidess ad compassio. JESUS SAYS TO LOVE OTHERS AS OURSELVES. May we all choose the way of the good Samarita ad kow the fulless of givig ad receivig kidess, compassio, ad forgiveess. Whe we do, we show God s love i the world. Sprig Quarter Lesso 5 Grades 3 & 4
