Over the past three years, the Bridgewater Plaig Board has repeatedly iformed the Select Board of compliace ad eforcemet issues. I July 2016, as requested by the Select Board, I submitted a report cocerig four properties with outstadig compliace issues. Thak you for supportig Library fashio show To the Editor: The Frieds of the Hebro Library would like to thak the may people who came out to support our Fashio Show o Oct. 23. Put o by Nacy Spears of Imagie boutique i Bristol, a sell-out crowd gathered for a eveig of worship. They doubt ad serve. They doubt ad help each other with their doubts (pages 176, 177). God, it seems, has called each of us to a life of faith ad trust, ad there is o other way. Like it or ot, this is the way that it is. God is a Eteral Spirit -- Majestic, Sovereig, Trascedet -- ad He has chose most geerally ot to commuicate to us through our material, huma frame of referece. But, as Ortberg has show ad tell by her staff, with delicious food offerigs ad surrouded by tables beautifully decorated our first ever evet of doatios oly admissio was a huge success. Thaks agai! Frieds of the Hebro Library Bridgewater Select Board refuses to eforce tow rules through proper legal otificatio to cure. Aother ivolves a busiess activity ot preseted to the Plaig Board for approval, also easily resolved through a proper applicatio to the Plaig Board or a otice to cease the uauthorized activity. A third is complex ad ivolves multiple issues but is resolvable through existig eforcemet powers. The fourth ivolved failure to complete a buildig withi the required time frame, sice resolved by the sale of the property. I additio to the problems above, the Plaig Board approved a applicatio for two three-bedroom codomiium properties which were subsequetly advertised for ret as five bedroom properties. A otice to cure from the Select Board would have resolved the situatio immediately. My questio is, why wo t the Bridgewater Select Board eforce the plaig regulatios approved by voters to protect the value ad character of their Tow? Sice the Select Board has eforcemet authority of Plaig Board ruligs ad coditios, ad they have show a cosistet uwilligess to do so, perhaps it is time to explai to the citizes of Bridgewater why they wo t eforce regulatios, or perhaps it s time for a chage. poited out, God has ot left us without a itelliget, tagible, aswer to our doubts, a solutio that is provable to ayoe with a ope mid. 9 Health A9 Diabetic eye diseases BY MARTHA SWATS Ower/Admiistrator Comfort Keepers Eye of the Beholder Diabetes is somethig that affects may agig adults. I fact, the America Diabetes Associatio estimates that early 25 percet of Americas over the age of 60 have diabetes with type 2 beig the most commo. If ot maaged carefully, diabetes ca cotribute to everythig from heart ad kidey disease to erve damage. What may may ot kow, however, is that the health of the eyes ca also take a sigificat hit from diabetes. Diabetic eye disease, to be specific, is ofte cited as the leadig cause of blidess i adults from the age of 20 to 74. Rather tha beig just oe isolated coditio, diabetic eye disease actual represets a etire group of eye diseases that ca affect those with diabetes. This icludes diabetic retiopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, ad glaucoma. Before divig ito each of these, let s explore the way i which diabetes affects the eyes. How Does Diabetes Affect the Eyes? Whe blood sugar, or glucose, levels become too high, fluid levels i the eye chage ad ca cause the les to swell. For those who have diabetes ad regularly maage blood sugar levels, visio ca be blurred util levels are back to ormal. If, however, levels remai high over time, a variety of problems ca occur usually ivolvig the blood vessels i the back of the eyes which ca become damaged. Below are the eye diseases that ca result from these ustable glucose levels. Diabetic Eye Diseases Diabetic retiopathy: Similar to the descriptio above, this disease is caused by damage to tiy blood vessels i the retia, due to chroic high blood sugar. I the early stages of diabetic retiopathy (oproliferative), blood vessels ca bulge or leak ito the retia. I later stages, the blood vessels will actually close off forcig ew, fragile vessels to grow oto the retia. Because these vessels are weak, they re more likely to break off ad cause bleedig. The accompayig scar tissue ca lead to retial detachmet, which ca lead to permaet blidess. The bleedig the causes floatig spots to appear i oe s visio. Diabetic Macular Edema (DME): The macula the part of your retia that is essetial for the visio ivolved with activities such as readig, writig, drivig, ad eve recogizig faces ca become swolle from diabetes. This ca the lead to the deterioratio of oe s sharp visio. I fact, DME is ofte cited as the most commo cause of total visio loss for people with diabetes. It s also closely related to diabetic retiopathy, with about 50 percet of people with diabetic retiopathy developig DME. Blurred visio is the primary symptom of DME. Cataracts: The les of the eye allows us to focus i o what we re seeig. Ad as we age, the les ca gradually become clouded or fogged, idicatig a cataract. These are quite commo amog older adults because of atural age-related factors, but for those with diabetes, cataracts ca occur earlier ad develop much more rapidly. Similar to DME, cataracts cause visio to become blurry or glared. Glaucoma: Although techically cosidered a group of eye diseases, glaucoma represets damage made to the optic erve (the primary coectio betwee the eyes ad the brai), caused by a gradual icrease of ormal fluid pressure i the eyes. Similar to cataracts, the risk of developig glaucoma icreases the older we become but havig diabetes makes the risk of glaucoma that much greater. Glaucoma symptoms ca deped o the type, but geerally iclude hazy visio, severe eye pai, or the appearace of bright lights or colors. Detectio & Treatmet If your agig loved oe has diabetes ad is begiig to experiece visio problems, advise that he or she schedules a checkup. All of the aforemetioed diabetic eye diseases ca be detected by eye exams that check everythig from toometry (the pressure iside the eyes), visual acuity, ad pupil dilatio. These tests allow doctors to check chages i the les, erve tissue damage, ad ay alteratios to the eyes blood vessels. If ay of these diseases are detected, doctors will advise accordigly ad may suggest treatmet. Treatmet has become more sophisticated over the years, especially with the advet of Ati-VEGF Ijectio Therapy used to treat DME specifically ad the Natioal Eye Istitute cotiues to bolster research efforts i refiig detectio/ treatmet approaches. Of course, our uderstadig of diabetes itself is also a vital factor. While the hope is that we will fid a cure for diabetes, a goal that the Diabetes Research Istitute is actively workig toward, it may be a log way off. I the iterim, there are ways for seiors to reduce their overall risk of diabetic eye disease, as provided by the America Diabetes Associatio. Risk Reductio For those with type 1 diabetes: Have a dilated eye exam by a ophthalmologist or optometrist withi 3-5 years of diagosis Have a eye exam coducted aually, or more frequetly, if possible For those with type 2 diabetes: Have a dilated eye exam by a ophthalmologist or optometrist soo after diagosis Have a eye exam coducted aually, or more frequetly, if possible Geeral risk reductio tips for both parties: Closely moitor blood sugar levels Take diabetes medicatio as prescribed by a physicia Maitai a healthy weight Moitor diet carefully, payig close attetio to itake of fats ad complex carbohydrates Icorporate a exercise regime ito your daily routie, with at least 30 miutes of moderate activity (with physicia approval) Comfort Keepers Ca Help At Comfort Keepers, our caregivers ca provide assistace with daily livig ad promote proper utritio, coducive to diabetes maagemet. Additioally, if his or her eyesight is poor, we ca provide safe, depedable trasportatio to places i ad aroud tow whether it s the grocery store, seior ceter, or doctor s office for a scheduled visit.
