May years earlier, Israel s first kig, Saul, had tured from the Lord, ad God had selected David to succeed Saul. For years after that, Saul sought to have David killed. However, David had refused to act agaist Saul or to become kig util he was certai of God s timig. He had lived a difficult life, almost as a outlaw. Now Saul was dead; after beig wouded i battle, he had take his ow life. I fact, Saul ad three of his sos, icludig David s fried Joatha, had died i the same battle (1 Samuel 31:1-6). So the door was wide ope for David to become kig of Israel. David did t rejoice whe he leared of the deaths. Istead he ad all his me moured ad wept the etire day (2 Samuel 1:1-12). David eve wrote a sog i hoor of Saul ad Joatha, which ca be foud i 2 Samuel 1: He was truly saddeed that their lives had eded as they did. Uitig the Kigdom David was made kig of Judah. Israel followed Aber, the commader of Saul s army, who made Ish-Bosheth, a so of Saul, kig over Israel (2 Samuel 2:1-9). After years of much fightig, itrigue, ad bloodshed, Ish-Bosheth was murdered, ad the leaders of Israel came to David to make him kig over them. he relied o God, God rewarded him ad Israel with prosperity. David wrote Psalm 37, which describes his trust i God eve whe he was surrouded by eemies. I this psalm, David says to delight yourself i the Lord ad he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:). This could have bee the theme of David s life. The Jesus Coectio BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS Through Jesus, God showed us how to take every step of life relyig o him. David Leads Israel David was 37 whe he became kig over all Israel. He had first bee aoited to succeed Saul may years earlier, while still i his tees. Say: All you have to do to successfully meet this challege is pick a pey up from off the groud, sig your ame, shake hads with a fried, ad utie ad tie someoe s shoelaces. Does aybody thik this will be too tough? Here s the catch: You have to do all of these thigs without usig your thumbs! Distribute strips of maskig tape, ad ecourage studets to help oe aother tape their thumbs sugly agaist the sides of their hads so their thumbs are t usable. This may take a while, but studets will laugh as they experiece the difficulty of eve this simple task. Istead of the Ultimate Thumbless Challege activity, play the sog 0 Days by Third Day. Explai. Say: Whe we go through really tough stretches of life, we ofte lea o our frieds ad family to pull us through. Today we re goig to be focusig o why God is the most importat oe to help us through all situatios ad that WE CAN RELY ON GOD. If some studets are t wearig shoes with laces, set out the oes you brought for them to utie ad retie. Talk With Studets After studets have had ample time to try their hads at each activity, gather everyoe ad discuss the followig questios: What was the hardest thig to do without your thumbs? Why was it so hard? What are some other everyday tasks that would be difficult to accomplish without thumbs? What are some similarities betwee relyig o our thumbs ad relyig o God i our everyday lives? What are some examples of everyday thigs that, without eve realizig it, we rely o God to do? Say: It s hard to believe how much we rely o our thumbs! Eve though we use them hudreds of times every day, we rarely give a thought to how importat they are to us. I the same way, we eed God s help whether we realize it or ot. Today we ll lear how WE CAN RELY ON GOD. 2 BIBLE EXPLORATION Why 2 Rely Say: We re about to read about a really importat evet i David s life: his coroatio as Israel s kig. David had traveled a log ad difficult road to reach this poit. He d bee through some really tryig times ad difficult situatios. Yet, through it all, David had relied o God. Ask studets to look up 2 Samuel 5:1-5 i their Bibles, ad ask a willig studet to read the verses aloud. Say: God chose David to rule Israel because David had a heart for God; whe times were tough, David tured to God for help. Ad the amazig thig is that eve whe times were t tough, David still relied o God. God was a crucial part of David s everyday life. David s life ca teach us two very importat thigs: how to rely o God ad why to rely o God. Let s take some time to lear, from David s ow words, how ad why he relied o God. Why 2 Rely Bibles 1 copy per studet of the Why 2 Rely hadout (at the ed of this study) pes LEARN BY DOING Creative experieces take studets deeper ito the Bible. Distribute pes ad copies of the Why 2 Rely hadout. The ivite half of the group to study Psalm 37 ad discuss the hows the may ways, accordig to the psalm, to rely 8 9

Ask the other half of the group to dig ito the whys i Psalm 37 the reasos, accordig to the psalm, to rely o God. (Examples are He will make your righteousess shie ad He will give you the desires of your heart. ) As the studets dig i, have them take otes o their fidigs o their Why 2 Rely hadouts. After three miutes, ivite teams to share their ideas with the whole group. As each team shares, have its members attach their sticky otes to the wall. As studets create the wall of sticky otes, pay attetio to the words or phrases that could describe God s characteristics leads i the right directio or protects, for example. LIFE APPLICATION Egagig activities help studets apply Bible truths to everyday life. Ca t Live Without Him sticky otes pes or pecils After about five miutes, have groups each idetify their top five aswers. The call all the studets together to share their top hows ad whys with oe aother. Talk With Studets What did you lear from David s reliace o God that applies to your ow life? Explai which how ad why would be your persoal umber oe aswer. What s a area of your life where it s hardest to rely o God? Say: David s life was t free from trouble. He had his share of dow times whe he was afraid for his life, whe he felt really depressed, whe people thought he was a obody. I each of those times, he relied o God for protectio, comfort, ad worth. David kew how to rely o God, ad he kew why: the oly thig he could cout o was God. Now, let s cosider how we ca follow David s example ad how WE CAN RELY ON GOD. 3 WEAVING FAITH INTO LIFE Ca t Live Without Him Ask studets to share about adveturous thigs they ve doe, such as bugee jumpig, hikig i a wilderess area, scuba divig, or other advetures. For each adveture, have studets share what equipmet they used ad what the experiece was like. Say: We rely o certai objects i extreme situatios because our lives deped o them. For example, a bugee jumper absolutely relies o that bugee cord! A hiker i the wilderess absolutely relies o good shoes to keep from slippig off a cliff. Have studets form teams of four to six, ad give each team sticky otes ad a pe or pecil. Ask teams to braistorm a list of situatios i which people absolutely rely o certai objects ad the create a list of reasos for relyig o those objects. Have studets write each reaso o a separate sticky ote. Challege studets to thik of as may situatios ad reasos as they ca i three miutes. For example, studets might Talk With Studets Have studets take a ew look at what s writte o the wall of sticky otes. Which words or phrases o our wall of stickies apply to how we rely o God? Tell about a time you relied o God ad he respoded i oe of the ways listed o the wall. Based o what we ve read ad talked about today, what s oe way you eed to rely o God more? Say: Ufortuately, sometimes these objects let people dow. Compasses ca get broke, parachutes ca fail, ad eve bugee cords ca sap. But God will ever let us dow. David kew that well, because i all his hard times, God always protected him. Because God will ever let us dow, WE CAN RELY ON GOD. Commitmet Collage Have studets form pairs ad read Psalm 6:1 together: God is our refuge ad stregth, a ever-preset help i trouble. Ask parters to share what the verse meas to them i light of what they ve discussed today. The say: We ve talked about may reasos to rely o God. Take just a momet to ask yourself this questio: Why would it be good for me to rely o God, ad what s the best way I ca actually rely o him i the ext week? Whe you ve thought of a good aswer, come look at our wall of sticky otes. Pick the oe that s closest to the way you thought of relyig o God. Take that sticky ote dow, ad write your commitmet o the back of the sticky ote. The stick it back to the wall ad pray siletly by the wall, talkig to God about your commitmet. Allow plety of time for studets to reflect, write o their sticky otes, ad pray. Talk With Studets If you re willig to share, what did you write o your sticky ote ad talk to God about? How did this prayer activity chage the way you view relyig o God? How has God show you he s worthy of your reliace?
