3 79 Sata Tempts Jesus Luke 4:1-13 BIBLe BACKGROUND for Leaders Jesus Goes Ito the Wilderess Jesus temptatio by Sata followed closely o the heels of his baptism ad God s cofirmatio of Jesus relatioship with him (Luke 3:21-22). Why did God allow Jesus to be tempted i this way? At least oe aswer is foud i Hebrews 4: If Jesus had ot bee tempted as we are, he would ot be able to sympathize with our vulerability to temptatio. Because he was tempted, he ca idetify with us. Sata Tempts Jesus i the Wilderess Some ask if it was possible for Jesus to give i to Sata s temptatios. There s ot a easy aswer to this questio. Some say his divie ature ruled out the possibility of his siig. Others say that his humaity made him vulerable to si ad that if the temptatio to si was t real, the he would t have bee able to atoe for our sis i his death. For further study, read Hebrews 2: Although Luke 4:1-13 is referred to as the temptatio of Jesus, it s importat to remember the words of Luke 4:13. These evets did t mark the ed of Sata s attempts to draw Jesus away from God. Throughout Jesus miistry, Sata tried to capitalize o Jesus humaity. However, Jesus always withstood the test, ad he died for us after livig a siless life. The Jesus Coectio As your relatioship with Jesus grows through spedig time i God s Word, your resistace to Sata s temptatios will become stroger. What temptatios are you battlig right ow? Use a Bible app or a Bible website to fid a verse that helps you fight that temptatio. Persoalize it as a prayer, ad memorize it. You ca write your prayer here. Whe Sata offered Jesus all the kigdoms of the world, the stregth of the temptatio was i the shortcut it offered. Sata offered Jesus authority over the world uder Sata, who was uder God, without havig to go through the humiliatio ad sufferig that Jesus kew was comig. The oly coditio was that Jesus had to worship Sata. But all this was a deceptio. Jesus would t have become kig; he would have become a servat of Sata. Ad Jesus saw through Sata s pla. Jesus Overcomes Sata s Temptatios Jesus aswered each of Sata s temptatios with Scripture. What does that tell us about how we ca be prepared to face temptatio?
