4 Opiio A4 Thursday, MAY 4, 2017 Ed-of-year ad summer celebratios: Keep kids safe BY DEB NARO Cotributor As we approach the sprig ad summer seaso of celebratios from prom to graduatio, to summer vacatio, weddigs, etc., these occasios ca ofte become a reaso to party with alcohol ad other drugs. May tees view drikig as a rite of passage at these evets, ad they may be pressured by peers to drik. With Facebook ad other social media, celebratios ca easily get out of cotrol. It takes a combied effort of parets, schools, the commuity, law eforcemet, ad studets to make sure these evets stay alcohol-free ad safe. Parets do make a differece! Research shows that positive paretig has more ifluece over tees decisio-makig tha their frieds, TV, celebrities, music, ad social media. Take a active role i teachig your tee about resposibility. Here are some other ways you ca help: -Ecourage your tee to discuss with frieds about takig a pledge to keep each other safe ad to make healthy decisios whe celebratig. -Remid your tee that uder o circumstace should he/ she ride i a car with someoe who has bee drikig or usig drugs. -Do ot allow alcohol or other drugs to be preset at home, i cars or other places tees gather. -Provide adequate adult supervisio at home gatherigs. -Ecourage family coversatio aroud places where your tee will be. -Call other parets to double-check the plas ad be assured that adults will be preset ad awake at ay parties. Cofirm that o drugs or alcohol will be allowed. Discuss with your tee how a fu celebratio ca tur tragic very quickly whe alcohol is itroduced, as the use of alcohol is frequetly liked with other risky ad potetially destructive behaviors such as bullyig ad datig violece, uitetioal ijuries from falls or drowig, alcohol-related car accidets, ad alcohol overdose. Let the good times keep rollig i Bristol... at our expese To the Editor: After the great Nor'easter muicipal electios of 2017, Mr. Alpers was re-elected as Selectma i Bristol. Oce agai, the theme of "Laissez les bos temps rouler" (let the good times roll) agai rules i Bristol. Last year, the Selectme voted to grat a substatial pay raise to tow employees without puttig it i the budget or brigig it up for a vote by the taxpayers. The Selectme voted to costruct a $9,000 retaiig wall dowtow to facilitate parkig for a local ladlord without puttig it i the budget or a vote of the taxpayers. The, the police Chief istituted a K-9 Uit without puttig it i the budget or a vote of the taxpayers. This year, the Selectme approved a $13,000 purchase of a utility all terrai vehicle (ad you thought a UTV was a potato chip!) without puttig it i the budget or a vote of the taxpayers. Startig to see a patter here? Well, you should. At the last Tow Meetig, Moderator Ned Gordo, Chairma, Space Needs Committee, reported "The space eeds of tow govermet i 25 years will be shaped by the chagig demads of the commuity...bristol will experiece o substatial residetial growth i the ext 25 years ad may eve declie i populatio." Bristol already has a populatio which is older tha the state average." Grafto Couty Seior Citizes Coucil reports that "Bristol's populatio over age 60 icreased by 53.4 percet over the past 20 years." Most importatly, "The average household icome i the State of New Hampshire is approximately $64,000. The average household icome i the Tow of Bristol is approximately $38,000." What does it all mea? It should't mea embarkig o a ew roud of multi millio dollar expasio of muicipal facilities. Spedig o the ew Tow Office ad reovated Police Statio have already started. Hold o, folks; uder the cotiued leadership of ow Chairma Alpers, that's exactly what we, the taxpayers of Bristol, will get. Paul Simard Bristol Lefty looies ivade the Hall To the Editor: This is my 13th report to the voters of Hill ad Frakli o what is happeig i Cocord. I did ot write a report last week because it was very slow, with o Committed hearigs or House Sessios. I took advatage of the free time to visit New Eglad College, this past Wedesday with my wife. We atteded a tow hall meetig to liste to Commissioer of Educatio, Frak Edleblut. Ufortuately or fortuately The Looey Left was out i force. At the begiig of the meetig, the presidet of the college emphasized the regularity of such meetigs ad i fact had all the presidetial cadidates i 2016 coducted similar tow hall gatherigs. She stressed it was her itet to allow all positios to be heard ad she expected the audiece to be courteous. Courtesy is ot the aim of the Lefty Looies. Kimberly Mori, a political activist said it best i NHPoliticalbuzz.com. Zadra Rice Hawkis, who was paid to be there by a out-of-state orgaizatio, Progress Now, behaved like a petulat child ad kept yellig out thigs at Edelblut. She was asked to stop by orgaizers several times or she would be asked to leave. The oly purpose progressives served i beig there was to iterfere with Edelblut iteractig with parets ad educators who actually care about educatio i the state. Fortuately, Commissioer Eldelblut kept his cool ad we leared of his visio for the departmet ad his opiios o what New Hampshire educatio should ecompass. He also made the poit that he made the choice to home school his seve childre because he believed this was too importat a task to be left to stragers. Give the Lefty Looies may who were probably teachers, he made the right choice. O the way out of the meetig hall I oticed the Lefty Looies formed a circle o the patio, deep i meaigful dialog. No doubt their example of a circular firig squad. A iterestig poit is that New Eglad College was formed after World War II to provide educatio opportuities for the military veteras returig from the war. It is far differet ow. The college admiistratio is tryig to offer the public ad the studets a diverse educatio. You might wat to take a drive up to Heiker to see. Your voice ad your opiio o bills before the legislature are importat. You ca view the House Caledar every Friday to see what bills will be preseted at to fid out whe bills are scheduled for hearigs. 5 Opiio A5 Fiddleheads ad woodcock sally forth to grace the plate Fiddleheads ad woodcock would seem to have little or othig i commo, but i my case they are firmly liked: I my youger years, I kew absolutely othig about them, ad beyod that had o clue that either oe was fit for the table. Lookig back, kowig what I kow ow, I ca t figure out why such delectable elemets of Mother Nature were abset from my childhood experiece. Not kowig about fiddleheads is perhaps uderstadable, because they were ot part of the culture, just as for some strage reaso hutig with dogs has ever bee a big deal i my part of the North Coutry, ad ditto for duck hutig. Just over that ridge, or just over ito that other watershed, all these ad more were part of the fabric of life; aroud here, ot so very much. My bird-hutig days bega at age 12 or so, whe my parets more or less haded me over to best frieds Rudy ad Joa Shatey, to go live with them at Clarksville Pod. You mea they just gave you away? someoe ofte will say at this story ad others as I go over the hump of age 70, ad the aswer is yes. Rudy ad Joa s two girls were already busy, ad they eeded a boy to help them with their hutig ad fishig ad vacatio cabis o Clarksville Pod, about te miles ad 500 feet higher up i elevatio from my home i dowtow Colebrook. Ad both sets of parets had log sice cocluded that I beloged i the woods, ot o the village sidewalks. So off I wet, to just about the most idyllic, hard-workig, rustic ad backwoods life a boy could imagie. Ad oe of the first thigs I leared from Rudy. oe of the best-kow guides i the state, was how to hadle a shotgu. He haded me out a sigle-barrel 20, which I have thought ever NORTH COUNTRY NOTEBOOK By JOHN HARRIGAN sice is the best way to start a kid out---ad subsequetly all of my kids bega the same way. Alog with the gu came lessos o the fier poits of hutig partridges (grouse), ad thus o fall afteroos, after whatever chores at had were doe, I was off ito the woods. The edges of alder swamps were good places to fid birds, but every ow ad the I was distracted from beig ready for grouse by this little budle of feathers burstig forth close by my feet, emittig a frezied peepig oise as it hit apogee a doze feet overhead ad zoomed off for parts ukow. Hey Rudy, I said oe ight whe I got back for supper. What are those little birds that get i the way of my bird-hutig? ad after hearig my descriptio he replied Woodcock, ad I thought othig more of it. For starters, cosider the stamia the jockeys show as they steer 1,000-poud thoroughbreds aroud the track at Churchill Dows. For example, three-time Ketucky Derby wier Calvi Borel s strategy usually ivolves ridig his horse o the rail at the iside of the track so much so that his ickame is Bo rail. As a ivestor, you eed a strategy that s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerace ad time horizo. The sprig cocert series was really cetered aroud the Fauré Requiem, mostly because it s a choral masterwork that is well kow, well loved, ad fits the chorus well, stated Will Gu, Pemi Choral Society Music Director. The choral-orchestral settig of the shorteed Catholic Mass for the Dead i Lati is the best kow of his large works. The Requiem is ulike most settigs where the mood of colors ad souds are warm ad ethereal. The fial versio of the Requiem was published i 1901 ad was ofte referred to as the lullaby of death due to its lack of dramatic texts of fear ad judgemet. Fauré oce said, But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverace, a aspiratio towards happiess above, rather tha as a paiful experiece. We are very excited to have both choruses collaborate together for this performace! stated Gu. Whe selectig the music that will be performed, my goal i this cocert series was to pair the Requiem with music that celebrated life. From Paul Basler s Alleluia to Keith Thompso s True Light, I tried to fid text that would help reiforce our message. I m also very excited to add a piece that the Plymouth Regioal High School Cocert Choir commissioed last year: 'Time' by Ia Soderberg. The text was writte by a local author ad former PSU professor, Jae Babi, who lost the battle to ALS two years ago. Ia has re-orchestrated the piece to fit our orchestra as well, states Gu. Food allergies: Detectio ad maagemet for Seiors BY MARTHA SWATS Ower/Admiistrator Comfort Keepers What Are Food Allergies? I theory, it ca be easy to cofuse food itolerace for a food allergy. The former primarily ivolves the digestive system ad its iability to properly break dow certai foods. Food itolerace ca cause everythig from ausea to bloatig ad cramps. With food itolerace, you ca geerally cosume small amouts of the food without causig much of a reactio. O the other had, reactios from a food allergy ca be much more serious, ad cotact with eve trace amouts of offesive foods ca be life-threateig. Food allergies (commoly liked to foods such as peauts, shellfish, soy, ad wheat) are directly ivolved with the immue system. For those with a food allergy, the body produces a atibody called Immuoglobuli E (or IgE). Whe a offesive food allerge bids to these atibodies, they trigger immue cells to release histamie ad other chemicals, leadig to a umber of potetial symptoms. Mild Symptoms: Hives Redess of the ski or eyes Nasal cogestio or seezig Severe Symptoms: Shortess of breath Sudde drop i blood pressure Swellig of lips, togue, or throat A Growig Problem A commo miscoceptio regardig food allergies is that they oly develop durig childhood. I reality, food allergies ca maifest at ay poit i life, ad while the first appearace is ot readily see i older adults, may are still faced with symptoms due to a allergy s persistece late i life. I fact, food allergies are becomig more prevalet withi the rapidly growig seior populatio. The scietific commuity has yet to coclude the exact reaso behid this icrease. The agig of the immue system or immuoseescece is a factor, accordig to some. Others theorize that we, as a society, are ot developig the proper immuities quickly eough, due to the overly hygieic stadards put i place. Detectig a Food Allergy If a seior is cocered about the possibility of havig a food allergy, it s importat to receive a diagostic food allergy test from a allergist. Below are the four most commo diagostic tests. Note that all of these tests should be coducted uder the supervisio of allergists ad other medical professioals (as ecessary). Ski prick test: This ivolves a allergist allowig a small amout of food allerge to eter the surface of the ski o the forearm or back. If a wheal small raised bump surrouded by red, itchy ski is produced, it geerally idicates a allergy exists. Blood test: This teds to be more costly tha the ski prick test, ad is used to detect the quatity of IgE atibodies to help determie potetial triggers. Though this test ca yield helpful iformatio regardig the chace of a food allergy s existece, it does ot ecessarily provide iformatio o the severity of the allergy. Oral food challege (OFC): Kow to be oe of the more accurate methods of food allergy detectio, a OFC ivolves a allergist providig small samples of potetially offesive foods to the subject, followed by periods of observatio/idetificatio of reactio. If a reactio occurs, o more food is give. Hebro Select Board Patrick K. Moriarty, Chair Joh W. Duklee, Vice-Chair Eleaor D. Loske, Member Food elimiatio diet: Typically used i uiso with ski or blood tests, the food elimiatio diet is exactly as it souds. The test ivolves the elimiatio of potetially offesive foods from oe s diet to determie the cause of allergy symptoms, over a fiite duratio with close moitorig. Maagemet Is Key If your loved oes are faced with a food allergy, it is importat that they treat it seriously ad take the proper precautios. Uderstadig which SEE ALLERGIES, PAGE A11

12 The Rest of the Story A12 Doa Rhodes Studets from New Hampto School, who will brig the ghoulish but fu Addams Family to the stage o May 13, were busy rehearsig their fu-filled yet slightly macabre fiale last week. Show from left to right are Leo Liag (Ucle Fester), Olivia MacLea (Wedesday), Jack Wager (Lurch), Torre Davy (Gomez Addams), Micayla Williams (Morticia), Eva Dell (Pugsley) ad Maggie VaDye (Gradma). Addams FROM PAGE A1 tagged to portray Lurch, the towerig, stoic butler of the Addams family home. That, Wager said, is far from his actual persoality so he has bee cocetratig his efforts o keepig Lurch s straight face. The deep voice he has is tough too, but I m workig o it, Wager said. Ad while Wager stads a impressive six-foot-five, his other challege is Sampso s request to add a few more iches to his character s height. Last week Wager strapped o stilts ad joied his fellow actors i a dace rehearsal, where Lurch luckily does t have may facy footsteps to perform. Leadig the troupe through their rehearsal though were Torre Davy of Moultoborough as patriarch Gomez Addams, ad juior Micayla Williams of Massachusetts, who is the Addams family s beloved, but ot always approachable mom Morticia. I love her, said Williams. Morticia is very serious ad itimidatig, but still very lovig ad carig about her family. She wats the best, ad just wats to protect her daughter. Torre said his role is fu, but admitted it is a bit challegig to play a already established character such as Gomez Addams. I m really excited, though. The plot lie is a bit differet from the televisio show itself, but it also show a differet side of the Addams whe outsiders come i to the family, Torree said. Aother memorable character i the cast is Ucle Fester, who is beig portrayed by seior Leo Liag. Havig grow up i Chia, Liag said he was t immediately familiar with The Addams Family as a televisio show, but a moth ago he took to the Iteret to see what was expected of him i the role. Ucle Fester s a really fuy character ad I m ejoyig this a lot, he said. Liag wet o to state that his time at New Hampto School, ad his ivolvemet i several of their theater productios, has bee a very rewardig experiece. For may of us, this is our passio ad everyoe works really hard to do the best we ca. Mr. Sampso is also the best to work with ad that makes it all worthwhile, he said. This has become a istitutio o our commuity, ad it s good to see everyoe come out to take part i the Circle Trot each year, said the program s Executive Director Kathlee Kears. For the first time i recet memory, the day was met with sushie ad seasoal temperatures, ulike past years, whe rai ad sow challeged walkers ad ruers who came out to support the program. The Circle Program is such a great, great opportuity for youg girls, ad the Circle Trot is just a woderful way to meet ew frieds ad come out to take a walk with old frieds, Smith said. Youg frieds gathered to be a part of the evet as well. Plymouth Regioal High School Cross coutry teammates Aisley, Hailey, Radall, Kyle, Garriso ad Etha all teamed up for the 5K race, ad while the youg me opted for stadard ruig apparel, the girls added a little extra sparkle to their day. We always like to wear tutus whe we re ruig i a 5K just to have some fu, said fiftee-year-old Aisley of Thorto. It s ot somethig we do for a cross coutry meet, though, her teammate, Hailey of Rumey, added with a smile. Besides participatio by Plymouth s youger school commuity, studets from Plymouth State Uiversity are also a itegral part of the evet s success. Kears said the uiversity has ow added participatio ad orgaizatio of the Circle Trot to the curriculum for their health ad welless programs. The studets help set up the course ad brig i voluteers for the day to help us out. With just a full time staff of three, I do t kow how we could ever make this evet happe without them, she said. Kears also credited the Circle Girls, their metors ad other program voluteers for all the time ad eergy they, too, put ito the evet each year.
