JEANIE FORRESTER District 2 There were may issues that grabbed the headlies i this last electio cycle, from the opioid crisis to jobs ad the ecoomy. Oe issue that did t receive a lot of attetio here i New Hampshire was the struggle to fid qualified health care workers for our ursig homes. This summer, as I traveled throughout the state, visitig private ursig homes, couty ursig homes, ad talkig with professioals i the log-term care idustry, I leared about serious staffig shortages. Our log-term care facilities caot fid a sufficiet supply of Licesed Practical Nurses (LPNs) ad Licesed Nursig Assistats (LNAs). The cosequece of this situatio threates to egatively impact the critical services our seiors eed ad deserve. I a effort to better uderstad what is happeig, the New Hampshire Health Care has tured the state s restoratio project ito a wildlife success story Associatio (NHHCA) iitiated a survey to determie the root causes of the growig shortage of LPNs1 ad LNAs2. As backgroud, the NHHCA is the largest associatio of log-term care providers i New Hampshire. Their members iclude skilled ursig facilities, ursig homes, ad assisted livig facilities throughout the state of New Hampshire. Here is what they foud: Relative to the LPN shortage, 84% of respodets reported that they have LPN positios that ca t be filled. The LPN shortage appears to be due to fewer LPN educatioal programs beig offered at our higher educatio istitutios, fewer cadidates iterested i LPN programs, ad other healthcare providers hirig LPNs. With regard to LNA shortages, licesig challeges appear to be a hidrace. 74 percet of respodets said that their LNA cadidates have experieced delays ad difficulties with obtaiig licesure from the NH Board of Nursig. 58 percet of those respodig to the survey say they have at least oe cadidate who has passed the LNA exam ad are awaitig their official licese. 12 percet of the logterm health care facilities respodig to the survey are awaitig licesure for three or more idividuals who are ready to work. 78 percet of respodets have had cadidates waitig two or more weeks for their official licese. 18 percet have bee waitig loger tha oe moth. The log-term care facilities attributed the delays to the differet processes required (figerprit, registry, crimial backgroud check) ad a few oted that there is a ew computer system at the Board of Nursig which may be causig delays or a geeral backlog. Other data collected by NHHCA looked at people who will love her always. Home for the Holidays, it s what Bagle wishes for most i life. kow from coast to coast. Ad it is truly a spectacular story--- from the first failed release at Pawtuckaway i the early 70s, to the release of a hardier variety aroud Keee i 1975, to a poit where today s populatio is a estimated 35,000 to 40,000. Today, the big black birds with the iroclad feathers ad kee-eyed setries are see i every couty ad every tow i the state. Ad to thik that it all started with a swap, SEE NOTEBOOK, PAGE A12 turover, retetio, ad vacacy rates. Highlights of the data collected revealed that overall staff turover averages 41 percet; overall staff vacacy rate averages 12.3%; ad curret ursig staff is agig out. Aother complicatig factor is stagat logterm care wages whe compared to risig wages i retail, fast food, ad other sectors which result i log-term care facilities competig for cadidates who ca choose a more attractive positio with less resposibility for more moey. I additio, lower wages ad the 24/7 ature of log-term care makes this sector uattractive for curret urses ad LNAs who ca choose other health care sectors (hospitals, etc.). Despite staffig challeges, New Hampshire s log-term care facilities cotiue to offer care raked amog the best i the atio. No-profit orgaizatios such as the New Hampshire SEE CAPITAL, PAGE A11

Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Put Thaksgivig Lessos to Work i Your Fiacial Plas Over the years, this holiday has take o a variety of meaigs, most of them cetered o family, carig ad sharig. You ca carry these same values past Thaksgivig ito your daily life ad you ca certaily icorporate them ito your fiacial strategies for takig care of your loved oes. So, here are a few suggestios: Protect your family. If somethig were to happe to you, could your family pay the mortgage? Could your childre still afford to go to college someday? To protect your family s curret lifestyle ad log-term goals, you may well eed to maitai adequate life ad disability isurace. Your employer may offer these types of protectio as employee beefits, but the coverage might be isufficiet for your eeds. Cosequetly, you might eed to supplemet your employer-paid isurace with additioal policies. Ivest i your childre. If you have youg childre, ad you d like to see them go to college someday, you may wat to start puttig moey away toward that goal. You ca save ad ivest for college i a variety of ways, but oe popular method is through a 529 pla, which offers high cotributio limits ad potetial tax advatages. Plus, a 529 pla gives you sigificat cotrol ad flexibility: if you establish a pla for oe child, but he or she decides ot to go to college, you ca ame aother child as the recipiet. Be geerous. You do t have to be a millioaire to make meaigful fiacial gifts to your family. For example, if you have grow childre, cosider helpig them fud their IRAs. You ca t cotribute directly to a child s IRA, but you ca write checks to your childre for that purpose though, of course, they are the free to do whatever they wat with the moey. It s ot always easy for a youg perso to max out o a IRA, which has a aual cotributio limit of $5,500 for workers uder 50, so ay help you ca give your childre i this area should be greatly appreciated. Safeguard your ow fiacial idepedece. Almost certaily, oe of the most udesirable outcomes you ca imagie is to become fiacially depedet o your grow childre. Eve if you save ad ivest diligetly throughout your workig years, you could still be vulerable to fiacial depedecy if you eed a extesive period of logterm care, such as a ursig home stay. These costs ca be eormous, ad Medicare typically pays oly a small percetage, ad usually for just a limited time. To protect your fiacial freedom, you should explore ways of addressig log-term care costs. A fiacial professioal ca explai those alteratives that may be appropriate for your situatio. Commuicate your wishes to your family. At some poit i your life, you will eed to draw up your estate plas, which could iclude a will, a livig trust, a durable power of attorey, a health care directive ad other documets. To be fair to your childre ad other family members, ad to avoid hurt feeligs, you should clearly commuicate your plas ad your wishes while you are still aroud. Thaksgivig meas more tha turkey ad football. Ad if you ca successfully apply the lessos of this holiday to your fiacial plas, both you ad your family will have reaso to be thakful. The biggest proposed reductios are the postpoemet of roof repairs at Newfoud Regioal High School ($800,000) ad asbestos abatemet ad tile replacemet at Newfoud Memorial Middle School ($143,000). The roof o the 30-yearold high school has bee leakig, ad tiles at the middle school are wellwor, with some of them bucklig. Back o top Late touchdow pass leads Bobcats to Divisio II title BY Sports Editor DURHAM It s wellkow that the Plymouth football team likes to ru the ball. You ve got to do what you eed to do to wi, Sabor said of the wiig play, which came followig a crucial pealty o Bow that moved the ball 15 yards closer to the ed zoe. It also came after the Bobcats had used all of their timeouts ad were i eed of a big play. They wo the champioship. It was t pretty at times, but I will take it. The fas i attedace o champioship Saturday at the ew Wildcat Stadium certaily got their moey s worth from the Divisio II matchup, as both teams had their momets throughout the afteroo. Plymouth got first crack at the ball ad did t waste the opportuity, as they scored o the very first drive. However, Patrick Malm stuffed the Falcos o third ad four ad they had to settle for a 31-yard field goal to make it 17-6 with just three ticks uder three miutes to go i the half. He the got the two-poit coversio as well ad the lead was cut to 17-14, where it stayed util halftime. Sabor praised Magowa for beig ready for his big momet whe it came. He has t really gotte the carries ad that ca be frustratig, Sabor said. But today, we wet to him, he had his momets ad he had a couple of big rus. Bow did t back dow, however, despite Goodale stoppig a scree pass i the backfield o the very first play of the ext drive. Bow drove dow the field ad put the ball i the ed zoe from three yards out with 4:02 remaiig to take the lead. Calmly, the Bobcats took over agai ad Macomber ad Jorda Doce had carries, movig the ball up the field for a first dow. Macomber carried three more times to get the ball over midfield for aother first dow ad the picked up aother first dow with 48 secods to go at the 30-yard lie. Back i 2012 I was excited to receive credetials to cover the Witer Olympics i Russia i Thaks to the geerosity of so may people, I was able to make the trip to Sochi to cover the local Olympias ad the Olympics i geerals. It was by far oe of the most icredible experieces of my life ad I ca ever thak the people who helped me raise moey for the trip eough for the experiece that I had. Whe I applied for those credetials, it was pretty much o a whim. I saw that weekly ewspapers were low o the priority list for people receivig credetials, so I figured there was a slim chace that I would be headig to Russia. However, after a iterview ad some paperwork, the US Olympic Committee decided to give me a credetial for the Sochi Games. I had the chace to apply for credetials for the Summer Olympics that recetly took place i Rio de Jaeiro, but with a lack of local athletes, I was t as iterested i headig to South America. With the amout of moey it costs to make this trip, I did t thik the expese would justify the meas. Additioally, a lot more people apply for Summer Olympic credetials tha Witer Olympics, so my chaces were smaller of eve gettig i. But, I did apply to credetials for the 2018 Witer Olympics i Pyeog- Chag, South Korea ad I got ews a few weeks said. The Newfoud roster icluded Haley Dukette, Bailey Fairbak, Hailey Towe, Daielle Walker, Shya Seymor, Jamie Norto, Emalie ago that my credetial applicatio had bee approved ad, if all thigs work out, I will be headig aroud the world i February of Last time this opportuity arose, I lauched a fudraisig campaig ad had a lot of great people help me out alog the way. So may readers ad other commuity members helped me reach the fudraisig goal ad my compay matched the moey that I raised. This time aroud, I am ot 100 percet sure how I am goig to hadle puttig the moey together for this trip. My compay has oce agai agreed to match aythig that I raise to make the trip, for which I am eterally grateful. However, the last time this happeed, I framed it as a oce i a lifetime opportuity for a local sports reporter ad sice this will techically make this a twice i a lifetime experiece. So I do t kow if I feel COURTESY PHOTO Ruiter ad Marisa Stafford. Yes, the Olympics are still more tha a year away, but I will at least be thikig about it over the ext few weeks as I figure thigs out. But eedless to say, this is yet aother excitig opportuity ad I am thrilled to just get the chace to thik about this. Fially, have a great day Kristi ad Bria Hikel.
