Papa's Objectons Ddn't Count Here Russan Grl s Backed By Mother And Succeeds n Marryng Flpno of Her Choce. When a grl wants to marry a man, paternal favor doesn't have very much weght, and partcularly so when the grl s backed by her mother. At least ths was so n the case of 16 year old Besse Kozlk, acomely Russan grl of Keahua, who was determned to marry Arseno Abellana, a less comely Flpno, of Hamakua- - poko. When the grl and her parents and her fance appeared before Marrage Lcense Agent Cum-mngon Wednesday, t vas clea Geo. -- that the father was not pleased wth the match. He protested vgorously, and offered the Flpno $200 f he would leave the country wthout hs (bughter. The ferl, however, was backed by her mother, who gave the necessary consent, and the lcense was ssued n spte of Tapa Kozk. The couple were later wed by the Rev. L. C. Kaumehewa. On account of the fact that n pre vous years the Schnol buldng has proved too small to accomodate the attendance t has been decded to gve the tea ths year at the Paa Communty House. The sch0ol s dvded nto Commt tees for the affar as follows; and junors; Decoraton, sophmores;; Refreshment, freshmen; Fnance, the entre school. The proceeds from the tea are to be used to help defray the graduatng expenses of the recepton whch s tq be gven to the graduatng class n June. Mltarsm To Be Avoded Now, t s not desrable that the whole populaton be formed nto a per manent mlta. Such a polcy of defense would nvte mltarsm. Some form of a guarantee that they wll receve not less than $15 per ton, wll probably be ask- - by the farmers. The cannery at present s buyng the larger part of ts frut, and t s understood was able to make a snull proft on ths, al though the growers lost heavly. The dsnclnaton of the growers to plant much n the past year, however, has caused the Haku company to n crease ts own acreage by several hundred acres. A hu of homesteaders however, has recently planted about acres, beng fnanced n part n ths by the cannery. A great Grecan nndmnrk s tho Soros, tho mound erected over tho graves of 102 Athenans who fol n tho bnttlo of Marathon, Aug. 12, 490 B. O. Tho mound s about forty feet hgh and 300 yards n clrcumferenco. Underneath the mound He the heroes who ded n ths most decsve vctory whch prevented the Persans from nvadng Europe. Tho battle had hardly begun when tho Ferslats n mmensely superor! force, doubtless ten to one, pulled themselves together nnd by sheer mass broko through tho Greek center. But ths hod been calculated upon beforehand. MUtlades employed strategy, makng hs lne wealc nt the center, nnd allowed the Persans to break n. Then, wth hs heavy masses nt the ends, he ground tho Torson wngs to peces nnd fell upon ther center. The most stubborn fghtng, npnrt from the bnttlo nt tho shps, was probably nt ths spot, half a mle from the shore. Sx thousand four hundred Persans lay on ths plan and along the shore, whle 102 men of Marathon lay wrapped n glory on the Held. t was long suspected thnt the heroes of Marathon were burled under the mound, but Mr. Stnls, one of the Greek cphorl of antqutes, studyng tho plan, came to tho concluson thnt the surface of the sol had been rased by alluval deposts eght to ten feet nbove tho level of 400. C. n 1800 he drovo a trench wth a downward slant nto tho center of tho mound nnd found tho bones of the heroes wth ther weapons bealdo them. Strand Magazne. Heght of Waves. Among the most trustworthy scentfc measurements of ocean waves are those of Lleutenunt 'arls of the French navy. The hghest 'waves measured by hm were n tho ndan ocean between tho Cape of Good Hope and tho sland of St. Paul. Thrty waves measured durng a northwest gale there averaged twenty-nlu- e and one-ha- lf feet n heght, and sx of them, followng one another wt beautful regularty, were thlrty-eove- n and one-hal- f feet n heght Some stll hgher waves were seon, but not measured. n a moderate breeze the length of a wave was found to be about twenty-flv- e tmes ts heght, but n a gale Only eghteen tmes. Wells of the senor class of the Maul Hgh School. One of the two second przes was won by Mss Vrgna McConkey, and of the ten thrd przes, three were also won by Maul Hgh School students Mss rene Wells, Mss Constance Rose and Mss Anne Walker. Mr. Well's essay was especally hghly complmented by the judges and s well worth readng.) n speakng of the true Amercan ctzen we are accustomed to call to mnd the lves of such men as Washngton, Frankln, Lncoln, Webster Grant and many others whose names have been preserved n hstory as patrots and lovers of ther country. Cut we must remember that they were extraordnary men. t s not really neces sary that one be unusually learned or Efted to be a good ctzen; and ndeed t s often the case that not all men of unusual accomplshments make fne ctzens. We fnd that any man, no matter how poor or how humble be may be, who does hs duty to hs coun try, s he true ctzen. Now the dutes of a ctzen should be n proporton to the prvleges he enjoys. Such beng the case, we Amer cans are under greater oblgaton to our country than any other people, for wo have dstnct prvleges that few other people possess. Freedom nherent Rght We have, frst of all, the rght to ha free and to be happy. The enjoy ment of ths prvlege nvolves a great deal, whch may be expressed by say ng that we are not slaves, but ourown masters; and we are so protected, both ndvdually and as a naton, that f we are not happy n our freedom, the blame must be lad, not to our government, but to ourselves. Every Amercan, too, wth very few exceptons, has the rght to take part n the naton's government. n fact, no other country grants ths prvlege s0 lberally to ts subjects as does Amerca. The whole government controlled by the people, personally and through ther representatves. The mportance of ths prvlege of the people cannot be overestmated, for t ncludes most of our mnor prvleges of everyday lfe, such as our rght to worshp as we please, to own land, and to make wlls controllng the dsposton of our estates, prvleges, the restrcton of whch by a tyrr&ncal government, would seem unbearable. So we see that our prvleges are very generous and Our dutes then, must be many and mportant. The frst duty of any ctzen s to be loyal. Ths apples whether a per son be a natve or a naturalzed Amercan; for anyone who lves n the en joyment of our specal prvleges should be true to the country that grants them. Another duly of the true ctzen s to be educated. Ths does not necessarly mean to have the learnng of a college professor but smply to possess suffcent educaton and enough general knowledge and common sense to enable one to realze hs great prvleges and perform hs ordnary dutes. Thrdly, no ctzen can better ad hs country than by takng an actve part n the work of the naton by havng some busness or professon. The exstence of so large a populaton n Amerca depends prmarly upon our agrculture, manufacture, and com merce, and those men are to be admr ed, whose efforts have made possble the rapd advances n these ndustres durng the past few years. Ctzens Should Do Duty We have already seen that the entre government s controlled by the people themselves. Now, n order that the government run smoothly, t s of prme mportance that each ctzen perform hs alloted part n t. Every man has the rght to vote, and ths rght should not be abused for t s more than a mere prvlege, t s a sacred duty. Every vote should be cast wth the honest purpose of help ng to choose the very best publc of fcals to admnster the government. Agan, t s the dutyof those specally ftted for the work to be wllng to serve the people, when called upon, ether wthout recompense.as jurymen wtnesses, etc., n the admnstraton of justce, or as regularly pad hold ers of publc offce. An mportant duty of these publc offcers s to provde for the natonal defense. The great war n Europe has shown us that there can be no peace untl democracy has trumphed over monarchy, and hence, that for many years to come, no naton can feel safe wthout adaquate mltary protecton t s the polcy of our government to provde ths defense, and our country beng rch and prosperous, there can be no lack of money to buld all the battleshps and other armaments ne cessary. But sklled men to use these tools are not so abundant. Our coun try does not requre mltary servce of ts ctzens, and as a result, we have nothng on whch to rely n case of dre necessty, but a small stand ng army and mlta. t SEND THE PCTURES you care about TO US We arc experts n Developng, Tralng and Enlargng. No Placo For Lades, A famous foregn newspaper correspondent, a German, was stoppng at a 6easlde hotel where the dnng room helpers, followng the New England custom, were nearly all college grls, workng durng vacaton n order to keep themselves at school the rest of the year. The spectacled young person who presded over the table where the German newspaper man ate was undoubtedly of excellent breedng, but she never seemed to remember whether the eggs were to be fred on one sde or scrambled on both. Fnally, one evenng after be bad been served wth a meal entrely dfferent from the one he bad ordered, the foregner lost hs temper and spoke rather sharply to the young woman. "Easy there!" admonshed hs table mate, an Amercan wrter. "She's a lady, you know, old man." "But do not vant a lady," sad the German plantvely. " vant a water!" Saturday Evenng Post That the nteror of the earth s ntensely hot s proved by the ncrease n temperature observed n deep mnes and n even deeper borngs. t s proved also by the emsson of lava, whch s nothng more than molten rock, from the craters of volcanoes. But the scentsts, who mantan that the earth's teror n- s not flud but of the consstency of steel, are probably correct Just the same. Matter, when under great pressure, may be rgd even at enormously hgh temperature. The nteror rocks of the earth may be heated to several thousand degrees and stll be sold. When pushed up to the surface by volcanc acton and releved from pressure these sold, though superheated, rocks would become mmedately lquefed. The practcal deep well borers, who fnd that ther drlls are softened by the beat of the lower strata, have not got the laugh on the theoretc savants. Phladelpha Record. SAVED HS WLD GOATS. Emperor Maxmlan Wat Lucky n Havng a Wae Advser. Of the great Emperor Maxmlan t s told that once when travelng far from home he wore so sad nn expresson that a courter naked hm what affars of stato could cnuso so much concern. The emperor repled t was not the stato but bex ho was thnkng of. n hs absence ho feared a certan ponchcr, whom ho mentoned by mme, would make havoc wth the herds. Could the courter propose any preventve? The astute person thus addressed mmedately suggested a letter to the poacher's wfe, sgned and scaled by the mperal hand nnd offerng her the best slk dress that could be obtaned f the emperor's wld gonts were not touched durng hs absence. And such, alas, s the nfluence of the sex that hstory hnts the brbe wns more effectual than "all the kng's horses and all the kng's men" n the way of forest rangers and wood reeves. Maxmlan had a preserve of these anmals n the Tyrol near the Aachen sea nnd has left on record some nterestng notes and llustratons of the sport he enjoyed among them. One pcture represents hm n a bont on a lake assstng to catch an bex n a large net, whch may have been good fun, even f t were scarcely sportsunnlke. t wns Maxmlan, too, who boosted that on one occason he klled an bex at 200 ynrds wth a crossbow when hs companon had mssed t wth a gun. Seeng thnt the "fre tubes" of the perod were nbout the slowest and most nwkwnrd weapons any one could magne, the feat was scarcely to be wondered nt. London Globe. END OF THE EARTH. That Great Tragedy May Be 2,000,000 or 95,000,000 Years Away. Scentsts tell us that lfe on the earth began nbout 2,000,000 years ngo. t hns generally been accepted thnt lfe wll last for 05,000,000 years. Nnety-fv- e mllon years s a farly long tme. None of us who are alve today need worry about what wll take place 05,000,000 years hence. Even the most altrustc can scarcely be nspred by love for an nconcevably remote posterty. But the French savants are altogether dsturbng. Here comes one, M. Verronet, who snys that the earth wll permanently freeze wthn the next 2,000,000 years nnd thnt lfe wll vansh. Ths s brngng the tragedy nearer home. We would gladly accept the older reckonng. Verronet places manknd of today about mdway between the begnnng and the end. He computes thnt n the future lfe wll exst as long as t has already exsted. He specfes only one forty-eght- h as long a lfe as those who have studed n the past There s only one consolaton to be derved from the Verronet reckonng. As fnr as the nfluence of today s concerned 2,000,000 years s as good as 05,000,000. n ether event those who are comfortably laborng today cannot expect to be lovngly remembered when the cataclysm of ce makes the earth a barren wlderness. Cleveland Plan Dealer. An Eye to the Future. The late Wlson Barrett possessed a valuable old dresser who had the good fortune to be bult on the same classc lnes as Barrett hmself, and accordngly nherted bs master's cast-of-f clothes. One day somethng had upset Barrett nt rehearsal, nnd he lost hs temper. Every one stampeded out of hs way. le strode nto hs dressng room wth flashng eyes, and so ndgnant dd he feel that he ncontnently dashed bs hat wth great volence nto the corner of the apartment The fathful dresser, who knew every mood of hs master, was qute unperturbed. He merely exclamed, n bland tones, but wth a touch of reproach: ' "Here, steady, gov'nor; 've got to wear that some day!" Francs Bacon. The death of Francs Bacon was caused by hs devoton to the cause of research and scentfc nvestgaton. Durng one of hs excursons to the country he conceved the dea that anmal substances may be preserved by means of snow. He procured a fowl and conducted the experment hmself.
