No V X., n THE Lured To Oa n Search Of LADY GUEST AT YOUNG HOTEL, WHO CLAMS AUSTRALAN OUT LAWS BURED FFTY THOUS ENGLSH SOVEREGNS NEAR HONOLULU TWENTY YEARS AGO, BRNGS NEW YORK FNAN CERS TO HELP DG MAGNARY FORTUNE BUBBLE BURSTS. Phantom gold has stll suffcent charm to brng persons wth a passon for easy rches far from Overseas and even hustlng Honolulu s today the playground of the sprtes of glded chance who. have successfully beckoned from as far away as New York men and women to come to dg n romantc Kallhl for kegs of golden con that were never planted there. About the story there s the mystery of a womans wt and the old, old proposton of wser men remanng mum when they have dscovered that they are fooled and foled Ṙecently there came to Honolulu a tall, mddleage d young lady, accom. paned by a woman doctor and two "fnancers," father and son, who at once regstered and put up at the Alexander Young Hotel. Ostensbly, the men had conc to engage n a lttle busness n connecton wth New York real estate. They had all met, naturally enough, back east, and the tall lady had related much of the charms of Honolulu whero she had lved for many years and where she had lost one husband. Whether she was fnancally llxcd so that she could return to Hawa, where she longed to agan make her home, on her own resources, or whether she saw a grand opportunty to get back to tho Paradse of the Pacfc at the expense of her eastern frends, wth, perhaps, a few cash on the sde to warrant resdence at the Young Hotel, are matters whch may bo gone nto deeper as tme goes on, but concernng whch, t s perhaps more chartable not to nqure too closely Just now. Be these thngs as, they may, t was a hopeful party that regstered at the Young Hotel a few weeks ago. Tho tall lady had agreed to pont out whero there were burled, near the cty of Honolulu, certan hnt kegs contanng ffty thousand golden Englsh soveregns, a pretty lttle fortune of $250,000, a quarter of a mllon dollars. But when t came to the tall ladys part of the program, to pont out the exact spot where the treasure was hdde n, she was not there wth thu map as promptly as had been expected. Her drectons were vague and unsatsfactory and as excuse for ths sho wade t known to her companons 0SH5a5B2B5SE2K Your property may be; Dsspated by expensve lawsuts; Scattered by gnorant admnstrators; Allowed to reman unproductve. Wo havo learned how. to protect your ntorests, petfectly. AVould you know how? SMk r s $ m Hawaan Trust f L that, where u matter of $250,000 was concerned, her reward should be assured. Promses were made that f the gold was forthcomng she would receve her share. Her excuse met by ths state of affars, tho tall lady took refuge n the clam that she was n fact enttled to the greater proporton of that whch should be dscovered. Meanwhle at least one member of the party, the lady doctor, became dsgusted and packed up her thngs and left Honolulu. Then, the story goes, the men, actng on tho tall ladys drectons, rented a cottage n Kalh, on whch prem ses the con was alleged to have been bured, and by day and nght there were the sounds of pcks and shovels. But, and not so "strange to relate, there was never a gltter of gold. Now ths gold was supposed to have been burled here by Bloom and Douglas, a couple of Australan adventurersbout twenty years ago. Bloom and Douglas came here u the schooneryacht, as they called her, Beagle. One report had t at the tme, probably tho report they themselves choso to publsh, that they had been pad a large sum of money to get out of Australa and so fal to be wtnesses n a case n court whch nvolved several fortunes. Another report, more generally accepted, was that they had robbed a bank n Australa. n any ovent, there came to Brtsh Commssoner Wodchouse an offcal communcaton from Australa whch sought to have Bloom and Dotgla3 returned to Australa, but such efforts faled through techncalty or otherwse. Whle here Bloom and Douglas spent money lke drunken salors. at Abra m They made ther headquarters Fernandez" place on Kng street and receved lke prnces. There were feasts and luaus and dances and nether Bloom nor Douglas ever had less.than a golden soveregn n change. They freely told of the rches they had, more than ffty thousand pounds, and appeared not to worry about the future. They purchased expensve furnshngs for tho Kng street houso at whch they made ther headquarters and they pad ther blls before they got out of town, probably gong wth ther lttle Englsh gunboat, for she had been a gnboa t. The followng account of the trp to lacllwa of our naval men at the nvtaton of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, whch orgnally appeared n our Japanese column and whch was translated nto Englsh at the request of a frend, s here reproduced for the curosty of our whte readers who want to know how wo treat such news n our Japanese column, (Edtor.) THE TRP OF OUR NAVAL MEN TO HALEWA. Knd nvtaton of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce. A Largo Number of Offcers and Cadets Made a Very Pleasant and nterestng Trp to Hawas Beau y Spot THE DEPARTURE. As was reported n ths page the trp of our Naval offcers and cadets together wth a number of promnent Japanese of Honolulu was made yesterday to Halewa. t was at the nvtaton ot the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce whch body was knd enough to furnsh a specal tran of the Oahu Ralroad Company to take the party to Halewa. At nne n the mornng a large number of Japanese guests thronged the. depot on the Kng street, where they were cordally receved by the representatves of th0 Chamber of Commerce. At quarter past nne the whstle of the engne was heard and the tran started to move slowly, laden wth a merry par ty of representatve Amercans and Japanese. ON THE WAY. The mltary men n whts unform flled the cars wth a few cvlans here and there, and as the tran pass ed through the most enchantng scone the local men acted as gulceo for the guests of the day, who lsten ed eagerly to the explanatons made for them. The rce and cane, banana and ssal felds that came nto vew alternately and even a few tny fshng sampans n the stll waters of the gulf were all so nterestng to our welcomed vstors that ther questons gave us no tme to fnsh the story of the past scenes. Depots were all decorated, and crowds greeted us wth many Banzas. Afar, upon the flag poles of the Japanese camps n the plantatons, the flags of the Rsng Sun waved n the mornng breeze as f they were welcomng the party ev erywhere. The scenes changed every mnute, and the dstance of twenty AGHMTS TOR THE odd mles seemed altogether too short Royal nsurance Co. or Lverpool, Eng. to satsfy the curostv of our eager sghtseers. Admral chl and others who saw the mll, where a number of ther count rymon were at work, were much pleased wth the kndness of Mr. Goodale. Here t was. ndeed, after they saw a part of real Hawa and the work ther countrymen were engaged, that one of the navy engneers., who accompaned tbe party, okngly remarked that he would rather qut sea lfe and work n the engne room of a sugar plantaton n peaceful Hawa nel. Halewa was reached at a quarter past twelve. THE SCENE AT HALEWA. A party of three hundred Japanese together wth our advance guard, whch had left us at Walalua Mll, was gathered n front of the hotel. The school chldren wth flags of the Stars and Strpes and the Rsng Sun Japan OF THH HAWAAN STAR, TUESDAY, MAY 4, MENS TRPTHE AMERCAN DARY were lned up n parallel Hues, and as wo passed between them wo felt as f we were gong through between two hedges bloomng wth Sprng flowers. Pretty Hawaan musc furnshed by the Halewa Quntet Club Welcomed the party. A LUNCHEON. Atter a few mnutes of rest the party was seated at the table placed on the lanal of the hotel. At the round table at the head were seated Admral chl, two Commanders, staff offcers and Consul General Uyeno wth other promnent whte guests and the hosts. A representatve of the Chamber of Commerce sat also at each table and took good care ot the guests. MR. MORGANS SPEECH. Presdent Morgan, of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, representng the hosts ot the day made a short speech. Ho was thankful for tho presence of tho Admral and others, and expressed the pleasure of tho Honolulu Chamber of Commerce n welcomng the vst of tho tranng shps from a frendly naton. He sad that he was glad to wtness such happy expressons of frendlness between the two natons of the East and the West as those shown by the House of Representatves through ts Welcome Resoluton and by tho Honolulu Chamber ot Commerce through ts knd nvtatons. When Consul Uyeno put the pn upon Mr. Morgans coat that gentleman seemed well pleased, and a very happy mpresson was produced upon all those present by the Consuls clever dea at an. opportune moment Tho last speech, made by Prof. Scott, was bured n applause, and all sat to partake of an elaborate lunchco n, durng whch Feveral toasts were gven to Amerca, Hawa and Japan. GEORGE F. HENSHALL MANAGER TUESDAY MAY 4, 909 TUB DEAR LOAF. Local authortes quoted by The Star yesterday u the opnon that Avheaten bread was lkely to contnue dear ndefntely are not alone. James J. llll, the ralroad magnate, f entoned n a late New York dspatch, as beng; of the opnon that the prce of wheat wll never be substantally low, and that n the near future the Unted States wll be fnrona n mnrt. svnro nuntrps of frm ll to SU))lv ts OW needs. He ponted out that the populaton ncreases at the rate of Go per cent, whle the yeld of wheat and other staple products ncreases only 25 per cent. From these fgures he drew the deducton that sooner or. later the demand for wheat would far exceed the supply, and that the prce of ts prod ucts would constantly rse. He gave as an example the large mportatons of barley every year from the Argentne JKepuDlc, although a few years ago the Unted States rased all the barley t consumed. Ths same condton would, le sat, ap nlv to wheat n the not far dstant future. Referrng to the corner lately made by Patten n the wheat market, Hll beleved that Patten and hs assocates had merely an advantage of a normal stuaton, whch was made apparent to them by ther busness foresght. He sad that Patten knew that there was a decrease n the producton of wheat and a correspondng ncrease n the demand for t, and n hs bull movement he was merely takng an advantage of the stuaton. As Hawa has to pay more for Hour than the manland, on account of the sea freght, the bread queston calls for earnest consderaton here under the exstng condton. Perhaps an attempt wll be made to rase our own wheat upon the uplands beng developed as homesteads. Hawaan flour was exported to Calforna n the early days of the gold exctement. Wth ts soon expected rrgaton works, provded for by the recent Legslature, Kula dstrct on Mau mght resume the ndustry. Wamea, Hawa, s beng opened to small farmers and, as a dstrct where temperate clmate products floursh, t mght rase a consderable of wheat. A more certan mode of relef, however, would probably be found n the "developng of products, safer of cultvaton than wheat, whch should be substtutes for a large proporton of le wheaten bread and breakfast foods of Avheat now consumed n (he slands. More nrht be made of the ndgenous and other natural products of these slands for povdng the subtropc staff of lfe than s now done. Both the banana and the taro readly yeld to processes that make agreeable substtutes for bread. Then there s the breadfrut tree, strangely neglected here n ts natural habtat, avosp frut properly treated s actually what ts name mples a most palatable and nourshng loaf. A PACFC FLEET.. The. admnstraton appears to be backng the proposton of havmr a Pacfc lleet. as well as an Atlantc fleet. As the Washngton Star puts t: "Tf the speech delvered by Secretary.Meyer n Poston last nght s to be regarded as sgnf cant of the polcy of the new admnstraton n the matter of naval constructon, an effort wll be made to nduce Congress to approprate lberally for the creaton of as large a fleet n Pacfc waters as n the Atlantc. Secretary Meyer used these suggestve words n the course of hs address, whch s reproduced n part elsewhere n The Star today: The really effectve and honorable method of avodng war s to be prepared for Avar by the possesson of an effcent, uptodaand thoroughly equp ted fleet.of battleshps, both on the Atlantc and Pacfc oceans. " Ths certanly looks lke bg naval appropratons f the ad mnstraton can cret them, endnc n the creaton of two bg Amercan battleshp fleets, one for ths sde of the contnent and one for the other. WHOS DONG POLTCS. The Supervsors are to dscuss the matter of votng an appropraton for the Queens Hosptal tonght. The present Terrtoral grant apples for that nsttuton untl July next, after whch the hosptal wll have to depentl upon the county for funds to meet the defct between ts earnngs and endowment ncome and ts expenses of mantenance. The county has the money to grant the subsdy f the Supervsors decde to approprate t. Upon the decson of the members of the board depends to a very great extent what name they wll choose for themselves that of representatves equal to the added responsbltes put upon them or of weaklngs unable to rse above questons of petty poltcs. Advertser. t happens that all of the lettv poltcs whch has thus far developed n the new poston of the Queens Hosptal s of Advertser orgn. For example the Sunday Advertser lampooned two members of the Board n manner ndcatng nothng more than an ntent to antagonze them toward the nsttuton. Tn the same artcle a msstatement of fact was perpetrated n sayng that those two members were the ones vlo would prncpally have to do Avth the hosptal matter. Nether of them s a member of the santaton and health commtte e, to whch a hosptal queston Avould properly be referred. Ths mornngs Advertser savs, "At least Supervsors Qunn and McClellnn are n favor of the cty and county gvng assstance to the hosptal f the funds are avalable." lerhaps t mght have found tavo others, makng a maorty of the Board, n the same atttude had ts canvass any motve but "petty poltcs." There s a note of keen regret n the Advertsers selfcorrectng admsson that T. McCants Stewart has uot broken hs leg. Any sceptcal one who can not beleve that the Star once got a specal cable despatch s nvted by that ournal to step around and see "the orgnal draft." Advertser. The Advertser havng started the plan of dsplayng orgnal drafts n ts Kng street AvndoAV, avo nvted t to keep up the scheme. But there s a strange reluctance. As for Star messages, regular and specal, comng along every day n the Aveek, anyone can see em any tme. The Pacfc Mal StJamshp Company avoh a very mportant decson Avhen t had ts fnes for changng rates Avthout notce remtted. The fnes Avere mposed for a supposed volaton of the lnv, or nterstat Commerce commsson rule, e Avhch requres that notce shall be gven n advance of any change of ralroad freght rates. The company quoted a through rate from New York to the Orent Avfhout any notce. At the tme of the mposton ol the fne Manager Schwern sad that the requrement of notce Avouldnvtt the company out of busness, as Japanese compettors, seeng the companys duly publshed rates, could always s; cut under them and get busness. From the decson ust7rendered t appears that the company has a rght to quote xhrolgh rates Avhere part of the transportaton s by sea Avtlout gvng publc notce days n advance, of Avhat the rates are. nnr mnnun nnnpo pro and. Professors Plans for Talkng to Them f They Exst. BOSTON, Mass., Aprl 8. Manknd may be able to communcate wth the nhabtants of Mars n July next, says Professor Wllam Henry Pckerng, of Harvard, who suggests adoptng method of flashng messages when that planet approaches the earth to wthn thrtythre e mllon mles, or Hvo ml lon mles nearer than ever before, he declares. Ten mllon dollars s the sum at whch he sets the puttng of ths method nto practcal use, but once ths means of celestal commun caton s establshed, he predcts that the messages wll be easly recognzed and undoubtedly answered f there s ntellgent lfe on Mars. Whle astronomers all over the world are followng wtu ueep nterest me movements of Mars, whle at tho great Harvard observatores at Flagstaff, Arzona, and n Peru scentsts are eagerly awatng tho possblty of new dscoveres whch may prove lullspu ably the generally accepted belet that the planet s peopled wth bengs ot n telllgence, Professor Pckerng stands ready to furnsh a method, palustak nelv and carefully worked out, for actually talkng wth the Martans n caso tho comng proxmty of the planets reveals ther exstence. Provdng there was ntellgent lfe on Mars t would bo possble to sgnal the planet f wo desred to do so," he says. "My plan of communcaton would necesstate the use of a seres of mrrors so arranged as to present a sngle reflectng surface towards the planet. Of course one mrror would do as well, but as the area necessary for reflectng the sunlght over four mllon mles would have to bo more thnn a quarter of a mle of glass, a sngle mrror would not bo prac tcable. We would have to use a number of mrrors. These mrrors would all have to be attached to ono great axs parallel to tho axs ot the earth, run by motors and so tmed as to make a complete re voluton every twentyfou r hours, thus carryng tho reflectng surface around wth tho axs once a day, and obvat ng the necessty of contnually read ustng t to allow for tho movements of tho planets."
