1 AUMC A Community in Faith Where Active Adults Can Grow and Thrive HERE S WHAT S HAPPENING November, 2018 Sunday, November 4th Dear Friends, James 1:27 teaches us that True devotion, the kind that is pure and faultless before God the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their difficulties and to keep the world from contaminating us. Atlantic UMC certainly has a missional heart and does its best to live this teaching through its actions. Thank you to all of the servants who make this possible. I have recently been preaching a Sunday message series titled And Now a Word from the Women Each week I have spoken of women from the bible known for their faithfulness, courage and ability to trust in God and others during difficult times. Two of these were Naomi and Ruth, vulnerable women in their time because they had no head of household to protect them and no socially recognized status. Yet they persevered through their love and loyalty to each other and their faith in Naomi s God. When Boaz entered their lives, a good man interested in doing the right thing, they had an attitude of gratitude when good things came their way due to his intervention. They did not take these things for granted because they realized how blessed they were.

2 As we move toward the holiday of Thanksgiving, may we all practice having an attitude of gratitude. May we continue to offer hospitality to the widows and orphans of our time so that they may be blessed by our actions. In this way we will continue showing the true devotion, the kind that is pure and faultless before God the Father. As Naomi and Ruth showed in their relationship with each other that hospitality starts with us, may we model what it looks like in the world. May it be our buzz word through this season of hospitality and into the New Year. Below are some pictures from our recent women s retreat that show how women of Atlantic offered hospitality to each other during a special time away. If you didn t have a chance to come this year, please consider attending next time. It truly is a great way to connect with God and others. Blessings and peace, Pastor Patty

We continue to rehearse in preparation for the 2nd Sunday ringings at the 10:30 service. We are beginning to work on the music for the festival in March and will be performing some of it in the worship services as the year progresses. Again, we are always looking for new players. If you can pray about the fun that you had in music during school and college. And just imagine how much fun we have playing for the Lord! I understand that he has a great sense of humor! Blessings for your month... Happy Thanksgiving! BOOK CLUB JACKIE STERLING The AUMC Book Club met again in October and welcomed two new members. We had a very interesting discussion regarding that month s selection. We have decided to take a break until

4 January and will meet on Thursday, Jan. 17. Our new selection is, Plain Truth, a novel by Jodi Picoult. All are welcome. Blessings and Happy Thanksgiving, CHANCEL CHOIR JUNE TODD The Chancel Choir continues to rehearse on Wednesdays, 7:00pm to 8:15pm and Sunday mornings at 10:00am. New and former members are always welcome. No auditions necessary. We welcome Tom and Doug Hemmick to the choir. Tom has sung here many times and both Tom and Doug have been members of the Worcester Chorale and Pine Tones. Please greet them during the coffee time and make them feel welcome. I ask you all to continue to pray for the chancel choir, especially Charlotte Nash, Mary Price, Joel Gorgodian and Dave Moquin. Also, I ask for prayers for myself that I may have the energy and good health to contin7ue to provide mucus for AUMC doing what I love for the people I love and our Lord! Happy Thanksgiving. MISSIONS BILL JONES Thrift Shop The month of October has seen an increased demand for winter clothes and significant amounts of summer clothes being dropped off. Thanks to our many volunteers who diligently process all of the donations and put them out in the shop. This past month we have received several requests for clothing by the more needy members of our community and we have been happy to try to help them. Soup Kitchen The numbers of people coming to lunch on Friday has dropped off and we are seeing a number of our regular guests appear. Many thanks to Joe, Chuck and Terry for their leadership in the kitchen and also the many other volunteers who staff the kitchen and dining room. Without you we couldn t continue this very worthwhile mission. Thanksgiving Boxes Again, this year we will be participating in the Mountaire Farms food box preparation and distribution. The food boxes will be assembled on Monday, November 19 th at 8:30 AM at the Mountaire plant in Selbyville. Volunteers are needed to assemble up to 8500 boxes that day. If you are interested in helping you can either show up at the plant or see me for more information. We will be receiving several boxes to bring back for some of our shut-ins and other needy members of the community. This effort will also be repeated for Christmas with those dates to be announced later.

6 Church Kitchen As we transition from our busy summer into the fall/winter months and the holiday season the Kitchen will be busier. We just wanted to have a gentle friendly reminder to all who use our kitchen. After your function or event, please help by cleaning up after yourselves. Please make sure you wash and sanitize all the dishes, utensils, pots, pans, tubs etc. that you have used. Please return everything you ve used to where it belongs. Please make sure everything that you turned on is turned off. Please wipe down all surfaces, sinks and tables. Please do not pour grease or heavy food items in our sinks or garbage disposals. They can t handle heavy loads. This clogs the drains and causes us repair problems. The stainless prep table and serving surfaces should be wiped down then sanitized with the disinfectant wipes available above the large sink in the kitchen. Please remember to restock the supplies you have used, i.e. refill the baskets that contain the creamers, sugar, stirrers, tea bags, etc. replenish the coffee cups, etc. If we are low or out of a certain item, please leave a note for Dot and she will take care of ordering the needed supplies. Please take a moment to mop or sweep up any spills, they quickly become slick and hazardous, we do not want anyone to fall. Remember crumbs on counters and floors attract uninvited guests such as ants and rodents. Please wipe up or sweep up crumbs off of counters and floors. Everyone s cooperation is greatly appreciated.
