Philip M. Conroy, Pauline Marie Sica Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 8th at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members, Praised be Jesus Christ! As a parish community, we enter into the Season of Advent, our time to prepare to welcome the Newborn Savior of the World both as a community and as individuals. As we do, we also begin a new church year. We will now be reading from the Gospel of Luke. This will coincide nicely with the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy since the Gospel of Luke emphasizes reaching out to the marginalized. The beginning of a new year is often a time to pledge to do something better or begin something completely new. In my opinion, changing the way we both offer and receive Holy Communion during Mass in our church falls under both of these. First, I have made the decision as your shepherd to offer Holy Communion under both species, the Body of Christ under the appearance of bread, and the Blood of Christ under the appearance of wine. Parishes are encouraged to offer Holy Communion in both manners since Jesus instituted both of them at the Last Supper. Obviously, you are free to receive both species, or only one if you prefer. The Eucharistic Ministers holding the chalices with the Precious Blood will be standing off to either side of the sanctuary. You can either stand in line to receive from the chalice, or pass by with a respectful bow of the head. Second, there will no longer be distribution of Holy Communion at the middle of the church. It is very important that we all approach the Table of the Lord as a united parish community. Giving communion half-way down the aisle nullifies this symbolism and actually gives the appearance, from the altar at least, that there are two worship communities, one being next to the sanctuary, and the other not participating until Holy Communion is brought to them rather than receiving it as a unified parish community. Those who are not able to get in line to receive communion will be ask to remain patiently in their seats. When all have received Holy Communion in line, I respectfully request that those who were not in line to raise their hands so the priest or Eucharistic Minister will see you and know to come to you. You will be offered both species as well. This will begin at the front of the church and move towards the back. Change is never easy. I ask that you please pray that this new way of distributing and receiving Holy Communion will be successful, primarily because of your open hearts and minds. Happy Liturgical New Year! Gratefully Yours in Christ, Fr. Steve
