2 From the Pastor Queen of All Saints Basilica The very first function I attended as the newly appointed pastor of Queen of All Saints Parish was the Field of Dreams. I remember it like it was yesterday. I walked into the massive tent, was greeted by a clutch of parishioners, given my program book and invited to walk around the auction tables. One of the cheekier greeters urged me to spend lots of money. Almost immediately I bumped into Karen Proesel who was dressed like a Blackhawk cheerleader and selling chances on wining a ticket to one of the playoff games. The Blackhawks were very hot at the time and the chances were going for $100 each. I thought I better wait to see what else was on offer. Just a few seconds later I was accosted by several pitchmen to buy a square for something or other. Then Mike Kirchberg introduced himself to me, led me into the silent auction area and began pointing out items that he thought might be of particular interest to me. In less than the time it took me to get a glass of wine I had been hit up four times. I wondered what was I getting into. Is this parish made up of hucksters? What I didn t know at the time was that the Field of Dreams was the only fund raiser of the year for the parish. What I didn t know at the time was that all the ministries, groups and organizations of the parish benefit from the proceeds of the event. What I didn t know at the time was that the profit made from the Field of Dreams was a crucial component of the parish s operating budget. From this perspective the enthusiasm of the parishioners for the success of the event was not only understandable but admirable. They expressed their love for the parish and all its outreach ministries by encouraging everyone on the Field of Dreams to step up to the plate and do their part. As the year unfolded, I began to realize just how important the Field of Dreams is for the life of Queen of All Saints Parish. There are over fifty ministries, groups and organizations that this parish offers the community. All of these initiatives are funded out of the proceeds from the Field of Dreams. Queen of All Saints School, our Parish Religious Education Program, our program of religious education for the developmentally disabled and our adult catechumenate program are partially funded by the Field of Dreams. Our baptismal preparation program, Bereavement Ministry, Elizabeth Ministry, Homebound Ministry, the Saint Vincent DePaul Program and several other Social Justice ministries benefit from the Field of Dreams. Our parish social life also depends heavily on support from the Field of Dreams. The Oktoberfest welcomes hundreds of people from the community to good food, lively music and a great time all for no charge. Likewise the end of the year Barbecue gathers just as many of our families for an afternoon of enjoyment again without cost. In addition, the activities sponsored by our parent association and our Filipino American Community Association, which are so important for building up the community of faith, are partially funded by the Field of Dreams. Our generous outreach to those in need also depends on the Field of Dreams as well. I knew none of this a year ago. I did not know how much of the vibrancy and vitality of this parish family flows directly from our Field of Dreams. I thought it was just a four square acre plot of land that dramatically set off one of the most beautiful churches in the country. That would ordinarily be enough to justify its presence. But the field is far more than that. It doesn t just produce green grass; it produces the fertile soil from which a lively people can build themselves with God s grace into the Body of Christ. That s why the Field of Dreams deserves the untold hours of work on the part of the organizers and workers. That s why the Field of Dreams deserves the generous financial support of every person in the parish. The goal for this year s Field of Dreams is $375,000. That s an ambitious goal, but the hopes and dreams of this wonderful parish are ambitious as well. So when you re asked to help as I was last year please be as generous as you possibly can be. 9 MY LIFE CHANGED IN AN INSTANT I AM THE ELIZABETH MINISTRY Queen of All Saints Basilica I learned of the Elizabeth Ministry from the QAS Bulletin. After reading that the ministry helps women during childbearing years, I knew it was for me. My personal experience occurred several years ago but is still yesterday in my heart. I was pregnant with our first child in June, On March 3, 1996, our daughter was stillborn at delivery. The shock, sadness and anger were too much to handle all at once. My life changed in an instant. Family and friends were constantly by my side, but something was missing. No one could have known how I felt unless they had lived through the same experience. I felt alone even though surrounded by loved ones. I felt responsible even thought it was not my fault. There were so many questions, but no one could answer them. Within the next two years, following my loss, God blessed me with the gifts of two boys. It was then, that I realized, what I had truly missed and the reason I joined the Elizabeth Ministry. With my personal experience, I felt I could be of support to someone else suffering the pain of a stillbirth. I hope this never happens, but if it does, the Elizabeth Ministry is there to help. We encourage you or anyone you know to contact the Rectory if we can be of service. Scheduling Weddings: To schedule a wedding and begin marriage preparation please call the rectory to make an appointment with a priest at least six months prior to the wedding. Baptisms: Baptisms are on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each month at 1:30PM. To register for a baptismal preparation class and Baptism, please contact the rectory. Newcomers: We welcome all newcomers to the Parish. To register as a member of the parish, kindly come to the rectory. The Sick: Please notify the rectory about anyone who is seriously ill at home or in the hospital.
