Grantng that there have been far moredenomna": tons than can be supposed to be pleasng to the Lord, and grantng that n some cases denomnatoqalsm appears to be worshped more than Chrst, t s stll doubtful f all ths talk about the sn of dvson s rght. How s t that so many men who cannot get up n the pulpt and condemn _ the every.day sns of the people n the- church and on the street can~o freely condemn d vsons at ther ecumencal meetngs and n ther press releases? Do we not have need of more cour~ge n denouncng the transgressons of dvne law? Why s t that relgous lead~rs are now so bold n attackng the dvsons of Protestantsm and are not showng much success n brngng people to the place of repentance for ther ndvdual sns? s t easer to condemn the "sn" of dvdng nto separate denomnatons than to do as Paul dd when he caused Felx to tremble by preachng rghteousness and judgment? Perhaps ths flurry and exctement about church unon (for that s what many Amercan churchmen advocate) has.. another bass. Perhaps t s related closely to the East West struggle and the fear of communsm as represented by the powc;;r-seekng Sovet leaders. s t that n desperaton we must get together among ourselves and team up wth the Roman Catholcs to effectvely halt the onrush of an athestc system? f so, let us beware of the dangers we are nvtng. The expedency of church unon at ths mo?ent of ~story may be seen n qute a dff~rent ltght later on.. t could easly play nto the hands of certan relgous groups wth an nclnaton toward power poltcs. Comng back to the more noble causes of dvson among professed Chrstans, we of the Seventh Day Baptst persuason feel that there are certan fundamental bel~efs. and practces that compel us to mantan a separate exstence, although we feel a bond of unty wth all who have exp~renced ;vth us the savng power of Chrst, G0d s Son. L. R. Barnard n a dscrmnatng artcle n The Watchman. (., J f, f..., ~ Examner enttled "Bass of Unty" makes the followng statement: "From the Montanst movement of the sec::ond century to the splnter groups of ths, we must acknowledge that the motve could have been that the wll of God should be more perfect! y done and, partcularly, that the Gospel mght have a freer course. The Gospel s the mportant ssue." f we dd not feel the compulson of the wll of God there would be no excuse for the separate exstence of a Sabbathkeepng people such as ours. We make no self-rghteous or hypocrtcal clam as ndvduals of havng perfectly performed the. w.l of God n every respect. We mantan, however, that t s the revealed and unaltered wll of God that Hs people should keep sacred to Hm the seventh day of the week whch He has sanctfed. We want Hs wll to be more perfectly done and we feel that followng Hs wll n ths respect helps us to have a better atttude toward the other requren:ents of. r.~hteousness lad upon Chrstans. DVSon for us s not sn but rgh teousness. Negatve Thnkng Needed Under the above ttle T. P. qhalker, Ph.D., D.O., edtor of the Methodst Chrs ~an Advocate (Alabama) developed the dea that the so-called postve thnkng has led to the moral breakdown that s lamented on every hand. He fears that real moralty has lost out n "a rather foggy sentmental mullng over of such general vrtues as fath, hope, love, brotherho~d, and humlty - thngs that are often ncluded under the headng of postve thnkng." What we need, says the southern edtor ~ more of the good, o~d-fashoned nega: tlve statements about sn. Evls need to be specfed n terms of acton as God dd n the Ten Commandments. There we fnd a good many Thou shalt nots:' They are effectve n defnng sn.. We are not yet so near perfecton as to be able to gude our conduct exclusvely by just mentonng the vrtues. Jesus and the apostles emphaszed love of God as a great motve for dong good but they dd not hestate to nclude n ther nstruc ton many negatve commands. s t not manfest that too many of us have been hopng for well-ordered lves and a well-ordered socety wthout any negatves such as self-denal, selfdsc plne, and self-control. f Amerca contnues on the path of glossng over these basc Chrstan qualtes, what can our future be? f nculcatng these thngs n our chldren by precept and example s negatve thnkng, let"s have more of such thnkng. Head, Heart, and Soul f a surgeon wth fne nstruments and deft fngers were to perform an exploratory operaton on a man, where would he fnd the evl and the, good that. makcs up hs personalty? Perhaps the queston s not as smple as t sounds. n 1951, a crmnal n the Oho Pententary realzed that he had a mnd full of evl. He voluntarly submtted to bran surgery n the hope that he could thus rd hmself of hs evl tendences. The surgeon probably dd hs best but the man S back n the pententary for forgery. There s evdently more to evl than the malfunctonng of some tny secton of the bran. The Bble has somethng to say about the nature of man and the locaton of evl. The context of saah 1: 5, 6 may help to explan the meanng, but here are the words: "The whole head s sck, and the whole heart s fant. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there s no soundness n t." Agan n Jeremah 17: 9 we read the famlar wo.rds: "The heart s decetful above all thngs, and desperately wcked: who can know t?" Where does evl resde? An operaton on the heart, of course, would not eradcate evl any more than an operaton on the head. "Man," says God, "became a lvng soul" at creaton. There s stll much that s mysterous about the nature of man. Some of t wll never be known except to the Maker. The surgeon can tckle (n a haphazard manner) the memory of man, whch s stored lke a tape recordng n hs bran, but good 3

3 and evl, motves for acton, these and other thngs are llusve to the touch. For the present we can do no better than to use the language of Jeremah and saah about the snfulness of head and heart. We have not solved the locaton of evl but there s a soluton to the problem. Evl and ts consequences n human lfe are under the control of God. There s a way n whch the crmnal's "heart'" can b~ changed. t has been proven over and over agan. Hs nature can be changed by the workng of the Holy Sprt on hs wll. Chrst ded for our sns. Upon acceptng that fact whole- "heartedly we experence a transformaton that surpasses anythng human surgery can accomplsh. We become new creatures n Chrst Jesus. EDTORAL NOTES Tornados and Typhoons Whle our hearts are touched by the terrble losses sustaned by those n the path of the hurrcane that pounded some of 6ur Gulf states, and whle the Red Cross s grdng for' a naton-wde appeal to replace ts emergency expendtures, let us not forget that we are world ctzens. Tragc losses are no less tragc f they are 10,000 mles away rather than wthn the contnental USA. All the slands of Japan were severely buffeted by Typhoon Nancy whch left 164 dead, 2,926 njured, and 631,535 homeless, besdes damagng 54,524 nonresdental buldngs. Let us pray for all who suffer temporal loss and for all wpo have not yet learned how to avod eternal loss. Employ the Handcapped By presdental proclamaton the week of October 1-7 s "Employ the Physcally Handcapped Week." The Natonal Assocaton of Manufacturers s urgng ts 19,000 members to look for further possble openngs where the handcapped cap. take an honored place among the workers n jobs they are qualfed to fll. Ths brngs a hearty response from al1 rght-thnkng people. t s the Chrstan thng to do. t s noteworthy that snce World War greater. progress has been made on ths problem than any other n the socal feld, accordng to N. A. em. f we ask why that pont of hstory s mentoned, we are remnded that every war brngs n ts wake an unprecedented number of men whose bodes have been broken to the extent that they could not be completely repared even wth the best efforts of surgeons and physotherapsts. Let us pray that there _ be no more wars to mark mlestones of progress n rehabltaton. ''The Cow Jumped Over the Moon" The lttle nursery rhyme once used to amuse lttle chldren was then thought of as utterly fantastc. That dd not bother the chldren, who love to. dwell n the land of make-beleve. But to make that nursery verse come true now engages the best efforts of the most brllant scentsts. To be sure, we are not dong much about "the cat and the fddle" but we are spendng money n astronomcal amounts to make t possble for the cow to "jump over the moon:" Anmals (preferably smaller than cows) explore the far reaches of space before men make the journey. A man has been named by the Natonal Aeronautcs and Space Admnstraton to become drector of manual space Bght programs, whch ncludes an expedton to the moon. t s estmated that the cost of sendng a three-man expedton to the moon wll be about $20,000,000,000 n the next ten years. The Chrstan s as nterested n outer space as anyone else but hs prmary concern s to effectvely carry the message of salvaton to the ends of ths earth. t would not take dollars to the amount of ten zeros to accomplsh that task. The nuclear scentsts express fear that cvlzaton on ths earth may not last ten years. How much more approprate t would be for Chrstans to make an all-out effort to wn ths world for Chrst than to vault over ts satellte, the moon!.. LET'S PUBUCZE We wrote last week about speakng up about Seventh Day Baptst actvtes and programs. We would lke to suggest a very capable person who stands ready to help you n ths endeavor. She s Mrs. Rolland A. Maxson, Drector of Publc Relatons, Box 166, Mlton, Ws. f every offcer, pastor, and mem.ber of every Seventh Day Baptst church, board, and agency wll channel nformatve and nterestng bts of nformaton and news to her, t wll be possble for her to get a great deal more news on the wres and nto the newspapers of our land_ n a recent conversaton, a local newspaper reporter asked the Conference presdent f we had an Offce of Publc Relatons. t was good to be able to say that we dd have, and-that nformaton about the presdent's actvtes was beng channeled to ths offce. But not only do we have ths opportun ty to publcze natonally, there >-are many local opportuntes to "speak up" about Seventh Day Baptsts. Local papers are anxous for news f they can get t whle t s news. We need to take advantage of ths potental and to be lookng for opportuntes to make our name known. Another opportunty s to. be found n booths at state and local fars. Recently the Conference presdent and hs wfe "manned" the Seventh Day Baptst booth at the New York State Far. t was stmulatng and challengng to see the "reactons of people as they, for the frst tme, saw the name "Seventh Day Baptst." Ths s an opportunty for whch many of our churches shotlld begn now to make plans for the next far season. Ths brngs to mnd the fact that a World'.g Far wll be held n Seattle, Washngton, next year! Publcty s mportant for us Seventh Day Baptsts, for our name needs to be known. The opportuntes are all about us; we need to take advantage of.them. Psychologsts descrbe a condton n whch the person deprecates hmself because he ~ not proud of what he s or. MEMORY TEXT Behold, the days come, sath the Lord, that wll make a new covenant wth the house of srael, and wth the house of Judah: Not accordng to the covenant that made wth ther fathers n the day that took them by the hand to brng them out of the land of Egypt. Jeremah 31: 31, 32a. 1#f#f:lj#lS:Zll#t#E'*'#t~~ what he has done. Ths s not humlty, but a deadly thng that destroys one's true worth. Perhaps Seventh Day Baptsts are afflcted wth ths condton. The overcomng of ths mental handcap s not easy, but requres a sncere effort toward understandng and apprecatng oneos dstnctves. We are Seventh Day Baptsts and are dfferent, but no one else can make the dstnctve contrbuton to Protestantsm n Amerca that we can make. There are people watng for the message whch we have to offer. We must "Draw Near to God," apprecate ourselve~ and Publcze, Melvn G. Nda. Salem College Enrollment "Student regtstraton fgures reached the hghest total on the Salem College campus snce the peak year mmedately followng the ntroducton of the G Bll for veterans," sad Doyle Zwebel, Salem regstrar. A total of 509 full-tme students had enrolled for classes on the man campus n Salem, W. Va., when regstraton closed Frday, Sept. 22. Ths total does not count approxmately 200 addtonal students enrolled for classes at the Clarksburg Branch of Salem College. Death of Rev. George B. 4 A Worshp Medtaton by Rev. Loyal F. Hurley (Gven on the second mornng of General Conference.) The sense of duty and oblgaton s a specal gft to the human race. Anmals do not possess t. They may act from nstnct or habt, from attachment or fear, but, so far as we know, they have no sense of duty. Even among men the sense of oblgaton seems to depend largely on the development of moral qualty and conscence. Savages act on the bass of famly or trbal customs or taboos, on the bass of hate or fear, but not on the bass of moral oblgaton. Members of the faml~ who are old or helpless may be taken out alone to starve or~ de, wthout any sense of socal or morar falure on the part of the young and strong. Our mssonares fnd the practce". stll followed among the Navajos of our own Southwest. Wealth and educaton may be possessed,n "large measure wthout any correspondng sense of duty. The ncetes of socety may be observed on the demands of reputaton or proprety wthout any compulson of nner moral responsbltes and standards. One needs only to read hstory or bography on the one hand, or observe present-day socety on the other hand, to learn ths fact too clearly. Agan, the sense of duty seems to be a personal gft or development. n some nstances one s happy to recognze that a whole famly wll manfest ths fne sense of oblgaton, but experence teaches us that n famly after famly certan members may show a hgh moral and socal atttude, whle other members of the famly show lttle or none at all. The sense of duty s wdely dvergent n possesson and manfestaton, even wthn a sngle famly. t appears to be an ndvdual trat of character. Ths s shown so clearly n the famly of Joseph and Mary. There were' other chldren besdes Jesus n that ntmate crcle. n Matthew 13: we read an llumnatng statement: "And comng to hs own' country he taught them n ther synagogue, so that they were astonshed, and sad, 'Where dd ths man get ths wsdom and these mghty works? s not ths the carpenter's son? s not hs mother called Mary? And are not hs brothers J ames and Joseph and Smon and Judas? And are not all hs ssters wth us? Where then dd ths man get all ths?' And they took offense at hm:' Why was Jesus the only chld of Mary that created such a sensaton? Dd t grow out of Hs unusual sense of duty and oblgaton, somethng that none of hs brothers or ssters possessed? Wthout forgettng or neglectng one partcle of Hs dvne nature, one needs to remember that Jesus was a human beng, born of a human mother, suckled at a human mother's breast, rased and traned n horne and synagogue just as Hs brothers and ssters were. We are told that He was a growng boy who "advanced n wsdom and stature, and n favor wth God and men." That s, He had to learn truth and duty just as others' do, usng a human ntellect and human, experence to gude _),J'm n that quest. t was when He was 12 years old that ths combnaton of understandng and experence came to ts clmax. There at the Temple when He accepted the responsblty of beng "a son of the law," a "bar mtzvah," as the Jews say, when He passed from boyhood to manhood, t was then and there that famly control, though not rejected, was yet superseded by God control. " must be about my Father's busness," He sad. And that "Father" was not J osep\t, but God. Here began the development ~f earth's greatest character. n hs dscusson of ths ncdent n Luke, G. Campbell Morgan has some valuable nsghts. Snce hs comments are too long to quote, must be satsfed by pontng out hs man deas n a condensed form. Frst of all, the chld Jesus developed f rom brth to 12 years of age as every normal chld should do. Luke says, "And the chld grew and became strong, flled wth wsdom; and the favor of God was upon hm." Ths s the descrpton of what every chld should experence. t s just growth; that s, growth wthout any responsblty n the realm of the wll... We do not grow by tryng; t s nvoluntaryo And proper chld development s lfe wthout responsblty except obedence to proper authorty. Ths s how Jesus grew. Frst He "grew and became strong" - that s physcally. Then He was 'flled wth wsdom." The Greek s more exact than our Englsh translaton - "becomng flled wth wsdom." He was never the ntellectual marvel that apochryphal lterature presents Hm, knowng everythng from brth. "He was ganng knowledge by observaton, and by askng questons, and by recevng nstructon." Lastly,.. the favor (or grace) of God was upon hm." He grew physcally, mentally, sprtually, but t was all natural, normal, nvoluntary growng. Then He went to the Passover. From ths pont on Luke speaks of Hm as "pas" (a boy), not "padon:' a lttle chld. For the acts of a "padon," a chld, the parents were responsble. But when the youth carne to the proper age n adolescence he became Ca son of the law," and was re~ponsble for hs own conduct. We are not told whether Jesus had already become a "son of the law" n Nazareth, or whether He took Hs vows at Jerusalem. But when He went nto the Temple He went n because of Hs rght as a bar mtzvah, a "son of the law." He was recognzed as a son of Abraham as soon as He was crcum.czed; He became a full-fledged Jew by acceptng Hs own responsblty -to observe the law. Whatever He may have done or sad before, when becomng a "son of the law," He ratfed n full, and even more than any one else ever thought or dreamed, when He sad, " must be about my Father's busness. " N ow Luke uses a dfferent word n descrbng Jesus' growth, the Greek word "prokopto," whch n ts very makeup s sgnfcant. t s composed of the preposton "pro" meanng forward or ahead, and t'kopto" meanng to cut or chop. He had grown for 12 years, steady, passve development; now He adv:anced, no longer as a chld, but as a ~man He had to hack Hs own way. He was responsble for Hs own progress. He had sad, eel must!" Here let me quote from G. Campbell Morgan: How dd He advance? Frst, "n wsdom_" He had to face problems. He had to seek for nformaton; He had to fnd out. From boyhood up to thrty years of age, we see a perfectly natural and beautful process of mental lfe, not growng merely. but as all mental grow,th s under the control of wll. He s seen havng to hack Hs own way on. We may reverently say of Hm. He advanced n wsdom, havng the lons of Hs mnd grt up. Then the physcal. The order s now changed. n the chld the frst thng was the physcal, "waxng strong'o; and there s always the frst thng wth the chld. But now the mental s frst. The physcal, howe'ver, s not excluded. He advanced n stature - not merely grew; He advanced, practcng the culture of the body, and the restrant of the body, holdng passon under the mastery of prncple. And fnally, "He advanced" sprtually, "n grace: o As a chld the grace of God was on Hm_ Now He s lvng n grace. He advanced n grace wth God and,men_ Here submt that the translaton, ' grew n favor," s faulty and msleadng_ t has constantly been taken to mean that as He grew up, He became more and more a favorte wth God and men_ The preposton here rendered wth"" reveals the true meanng of the statement_ t s the Greek preposton "para," by the sde of. He advanced n grace by the sde of God and men. He lved n all the years of development, mantanng Hs fellowshp wth God, and Hs fellowshp wth men; by th~ sde of God, and by the sde of men. Thus: abdng n grace, He advanced_ Thus we see the sprtual development of Jesus from boyhood to manhood under the constrant of a wll submtted to God." How clearly ths shows the tremendous change that came over Hm when He had sad, " must:' Hs sense of duty and oblgaton and responsblty determned Hs whole lfe from ths pont on. Constantly Jesus lved under a great purpose: " came not to do mne own wll, but the wll of hm that sent me.'o Also, He lved under a great urgency: " must work the works of hm that sent me, whle t s day: the nght cometh when-...qo man can work." And after Pentecost when the Sprt of God came n powe; upon Hs dscples, ths same sense of purpose and urgency fell upon everyone of, them. Dr. Burdck wrtes that ths s a temporary arrangement, untl the 'church secures another pastor. Mrs. Burdck and son went later to the West Coast to vs t ther relatves and many frends there. Among the many servces rendered by Dr. Burdck at Makapwa Msson before he left N yasaland on furlough, he reports, "prepared for translaton nto Chnyanja a tract on the dfference n belef between Seventh-day Adventsts and Seventh Day Baptsts." European Slde Sets Avalable A set of sldes of European church groups s now avalable for loan to the churches, on a frst-come, frst-served bass. Ths set of sldes shows vews of the Englsh, Dutch, and German Seventh Oay Baptst brethren as they met for the John James Commemoraton Servce n London on July 22-23, 1961; of the Dutch Conference meetng at Leeu\vardt-n, Holland, July 29-30, 1961; and of the German Conference meetngs at Brunswck, Germany, on August 5-6, 196L The set s a composte of pctures taken by the Rev. Gospel Work n Mam For Cuban Refugees MAM (BP)-One Cuban refugee has come to Mam every 30 mnutes for the past 31 months. The nflux has swelled to nearly 100,000 the number of Spanshspeakng resdents now to be found n ths metropol tan area of one mllon people. Three-fourths of the refugees are escapng church afflaton here, however, Yet twce as many are comng under Chrstan nfluence n Mam as ever dd n ther natve Cuba. f the refugees are a good cross-secton of the Cuban populaton, at least 24 of the average of 48 who have come here each day profess no relgous afflaton at all. Probably 19 of them are Sprtsts - half of whom are nomnally Roman Catholc. No more than four of them ever took any actve part n a Roman servce n ther homeland. And maybe one of them s a Protestant or evangelcal Chrstan. However, snce the refugees are not a real cross-secton of the Cuban lopulaton - more of the wealthy an. upper mddle classes are among the escapees - the percentage of Catholcs streamng to ths land of opportunty and relgous freedom probably s greater. Protestant and Evangelcal churches are not reachng as many as Catholcs numercally, but are dong better, percentagewse, than they have done n Cuba tself. By far the most energetc program emanatng from ths group s that of Southern Baptsts. About 3,000 Spanshspeakng Mamans are reached through 15 Baptst congregatons of Latn extracton. n that program can b~ seen an mportant fact about Protestant work among the Spansh-speakng here. Of the Baptst congregatons, one S made up completely of Puerto Rc~ns. Another s half Puerto Rcan and half Cuban. A thrd s half Puerto Rcan and half Mexcan. Mlton S. Leach, Jr., who drects the Spansh program for Baptsts, beleves Spansh-speakng are here to stay and should be ntegrated nto regular Amercan congregatons. An nterestng socal development bas arsen almost unnotced drectly because of ths nflux of Cubans. Racal barrers have been lowered wthout any problem where Cubans - some of whom are Negroes - have been ntegrated nto Amercan congregatons. Whle Baptsts do operate an ad program to provde food, clothng, and shelter for the refugees, t s not too extensve, perhaps because Englsh-language churches have not shown enough nterest, Leach declared. He sad at least 125 refugees a day seek ad from Spansh pastors who often cannot provde t. Most of the Cubans who attend Baptst churches are not reached through the ad program, though. Leach sad. They are contacted through regular vstaton programs by the pastors. Many of them were connected wth churches n Cuba, of course, but perhaps half of them are beng reached wth!the Gospel for the frst tme. Those leadng Spansh work also concur that Amercan", churches are not dong enough to take advantage of the need and the opportunty presented by the Cuban refugee stuaton. Unfortunately, Evangelcals have done the least to meet the challenge. - Baptst Press. Fall Meetngs of Assocatons The Md-Contnent Assocaton wll meet wth the Boulder, Colo., church on October 6, 7, and 8. The Pacfc Coast Assocaton wll be held, as usual, n Los Angeles wth the church at 4976 North Fgueroa Street n the Hghland Park dstrct. The dates are October 20, 21, and 22, and the theme, "Salvaton by Obedence." 8 THE SABBATH RECORDER 9

6 Tract Socety Looks to the Future How can the annual corporate meetng of the Amercan Sabbath Tract Socety (or the corporate meetng of any organzaton) be counted as really nterestng? The fact s that t cannot except as t represents a forward lookng program and s closely assocated wth thrllng work already n progress. There s no queston but that an electon of board members and?ffcers s forward lookng. Upon that electon depends the personnel avalable for all the commttee work n the year to come. n ths case the Nomnatng Commttee suggested a few changes n the consultant member lst wth a vew to stre~gthenng some of the commttees. n the two-hour quarterly meetng of the Board of Trustees whch preceded the electon of offcers (the same as last year) numerous encouragng reports were gven of the frst quarter of the fscal year whch 'began June 1. The correspondng secretary revewed the work of hs offce, notng that 43 orders for tracts had been flled wth a record total of 69,500. Nearly 40,000 of these were ordered by two Assocatons fa! dstrbuton from. state and county falc booths. The board had pad half the cost of rentng booths n Dodge Center, Mnn., Chppewa Falls, Ws., and Syracuse, N. Y. t also provded more than 2,000 specal-ssue Sabbath Recorders for free dstrbuton, pad for by acton of the Dstrbuton of Lterature Commttee. t was noted that 8,150 tracts were ordered for dstrbuton n Jamaca and 1,600 were sent to a Jamacan dstrbutor n London, Eng. The secretary closed hs report w th the followng words about tract dstrbuton coped from a folder of the Amercan Tract Socety:.? ~. Panton has. wrtten, "n scatterng dlvlfle hterature we hberate thstledown laden wth precous seed, whch, blown by the wnds of the Sprt, Boats over the world. The prnted page never Bnches, never shows cowardce. t s never tempted to compromse. t never tres, never grows dsheartened. t travels cheaply and requres no hred hall. t works y-rhle we sleep. t never loses ts temper and t wo.r:ks long after we are dead. The prnted page S a vendor whch gets nsde the home and stays there. t always catches a man n the rght mood for t speaks to hm only when he s readng t. t always stcks to what t has sad and never answers back. t s bat left permanently n the poo1." The Publcatons Commttee ga ve the ttles of all the tracts reprnted durng the quarter - a total of 47,000. Attenton was called to a new tract whch combnes the best of two other nformatonal tracts. "What and Why Are Seventh Day Baptsts," was n process of prntng at the tme of the meetng~ Two others are approved except for mnor edtoral changes or cover desgns, "The Frst Day of the Week n the New Testament," and an up-to-date revson of "Seventh Day Baptsts, Ther Place n Hstory." Progress was reported on a new short tract on the dfference between ours and the Adventst denomnaton. n tmes when budget recepts from our people are not suffcent to meet the growng demand of the expanson of board work, Ahe treasurer's report takes on new sgnfcance. Treasurer Charles North noted that the board had receved from Our 'W orld Msson treasure~ durng the quarter $2,095. He has pad out for the Sabbath Recorder, prntng of lterature, admnstraton, and other authorzed expenses - $8,474. Sources of ncome other than gfts of lvng donors made up most of the dfference but the board ended the quarter wth a defct of $1,225. L~ter n the meetng the Budget Commttee reported changes n the current?per~tng!'udget.t~ brng t more nearly ~n hne wth. a~hcpated recepts. Some tems (for prtnttng) had to be ncreased; others were lowered. The budget now totals $33,996, whch ncludes a budgeted defct of $4,425. The board has authorzed contnued expendtures for advertsng~ prntng, Sabbath promoton, and rado work. There s determnaton not to cut down durng ths tme of outreach even though t depletes the reserve resources. Presdent Charles F. Harrs presded over the organzaton of the new Board of Trustees n the thrd meetng of the afternoon. He appop.ted new members to commttees, leavng the charmen of the eleven commttees the same. The domnant note sounded by the presdent and mentoned by several mem- bers durng the afternoon was "Advance." The trustees and comm ttee charmen were ~onscous that they had a place to fll n the much-talked-of ccthra Year Program for Advance." Mr. Harrs closed the meetng wth the words of the hymn: "A charge to keep have, A God to Glorfy, A never-dyng soul to save, And ft t for the sky. "To serve the present age, My callng to fulfll; o may t all my powers engage, To do my Master's wll!" - L. M. M. CHRSTAN EDUCATON - Sec. Rex E. Zwebel Youth Feld Worker When the Board of Chrstan Educaton presented ts budget for to Commsson, t ncluded an tem for a fulltme Youth Feld Worker. Because the budget was not rased n full, t was thought best by Commsson that the tem for the feld worker be omtted. But the youth and ther supporters at Conference felt that the matter must not be dropped. Therefore, Conference recommended that the Youth Work Commttee of the Board of Chrstan Educaton secure a feld worker to spend a full year vstng our churches ana workng n our camps and youth meetngs. A consecrated person would be asked to serve wthout jay. Only the expenses would be promse by the Youth Work Commttee. These are estmated to be n the neghborhood of $1,000. t was further recommended that each Seventh Day Baptst youth fellowshp and youth group of the denomnaton be asked to offer the proceeds from a specal project to th~ cause. n fath that you, our youth, wll support ths endeavor by sendng n the returns from your projects, the Youth Work Commttee s gong ahead tryng to get someone to nvest a year (or mere) of hs (or her) lfe as a feld worker for the Lord among our people.. We need the support of every Seventh Day Baptst youth fellowshp and every youth to brng ths to pass. How about you? Does t have your vote to be so f t can? Wll you start on your project soon? Wrte J. Paul Green, Youth Work Commttee, charman, Alfred Staton, N. Y., and declare your ntentons. A suggested lst of projects wll be sent soon to every church. Let's go over the top! We can do t. You and Your Church The new book, You and Your Church, publshed by the Seventh Day Baptst Board of Chrstan Educaton may be ordered from the offce of Secretary Rex E. Zwebel, Box 15, Alfred Staton, N. Y. t may be secured n any quantty for 50 cents a copy. You and Your Church s desgned to teach junors and those older the hstory of the church and the belefs of our denomnaton and to lea,d them nto church membershp. t wll be found useful n junor Sabbath School classes to be used when other quarterles deal wth the mssons and belefs of other denomnatons. t can be used proftably n pastors' classes. Every Seventh Day Baptst famly, every lone Sabbathkeeper, and every junor should have a copy. What les hdden beneath ths towerng folage? You could not guess wthout seeng the other sde. No, t s not a barrel cactus n Arzona or Calforna. Ths two-stage tower has no message n the mornng for those hastenng to ther work, but to those returnng or desrng to pass t n the opposte drecton t has a message of warnng. Clearly vsble amd the surroundng vnes s the famlar 2-foot square metal sgn markng the ext of certan narrow streets, "One Way, Do Not Enter." t s fun to take snapshots of the unusual thngs seen n the daly routne of THE SABBATH RECORDER r lfe. t s also worth-whle to thnk about them, especally when the message s as plan as ths one. sn't t wonderful to know that when we are gong the rght way, n harmony wth the law of God and the example of Chrst the contrary sgns do not even have to be notced. They appear beautful. But when we attempt to go the wrong way, when we steer accordng to our own wllful pleasure, then the other sde of God" s holy law shows up. "Do not enter," t says. How about applyng ths lesson to the Sabbath? Are you gong the rght way on God"s holy day? WOMEN'S WORK - Mrs. Lawrence W. Marsden A CONDENSATON OF THE MNUTES OF THE WOMEN1S BOARD Our frst meetng as the offcal Women" s Board was called to order by our presdent, Mrs. Charlotte Whtford, at the home of Mrs. Elmo FtzRandolph wth twenty women present. Mss Marjore Burdck opened the meetng wth a prayer for gudance n the task we have undertaken. The Dnutes of the meetng of July 3 and of the specal meetngs of July 22 and July 24 were read, corrected, and approved. n order to acquant ourselves wth some of the more recent actvtes of the board, the recordng secretary, Mrs. Eleanor Walters, read the followng mnutes: (1) Board meetngs of July 10 and July 27 at Battle Creek, (2) Women"s Work Commttee of General Conference, August 15, 16, and 17, (3) Ar,tnual meetng of Women"s Board at Amherst,. Mass., August 17, A letter from Mrs. Anna North relatve to her attendance at the Natonal Assembly of Unted Church Women at Mam, Fla., was read. There was consderable dscusson concernng the selecton of a second person to attend the meetng. t was voted that we lmt our delegaton to one ths year and that we pay her expenses. Our treasure.r was nstructed to send a check to Mrs..N orth. Our cofrespondng secretary, Mrs. Leora Hartman, was' asked to send a note to nform the Natonal 'Councl of Church Women of the change of address of the Women" s Board. Two of our members, Mrs. Sylva Burdck and Mrs. Evelyn Marsden, attended the meetng of the Plannng Commttee at Amherst, Mass., on August 13. They reported that t s very mportant that our presdent attend the next meetng of the Plannng Commttee to be held n the Denomnatonal Buldng at Planfeld, N. J., on October 16, 17, and 18. t was voted that we send our presdent to Planfeld for ths meetng as requested and pay her expenses. Correspondence was read from the Coordnatng Councl regardng survey and evaluaton of all boards. t was felt that we were too new as a board to make any such evaluaton at ths tme. t was felt by the members that they would lke to nclude the women of the Walworth, Ws., church on the board. t was voted that the Walworth women be asked to consder themselves members wth the Mlton, Mlton Juncton, and Albon women. t was voted that we desgnate The Natonal Bank of Edgerton, Ws., as the bank for the depost of our funds and that sad funds be deposted under the name of "Seventh Day Baptst Women's Board." Because the treasurer and recordng secretary are both from Albon t was voted that the recordng secretary be gven the authorty to countersgn the checks for the comng year. A request from the Natonal Councl of Churches for the name of our educaton leader was brought to our attenton. t was vqted that our presdent's name be sent so that we wll receve any nformaton that mght be sent from the Natonal Councl. The matter of date and tme for the Executve Commttee meetng and the regular board meetng was dscussed. t was voted that both meetngs be on the frst Monday evenng of each month wth the executve meetng at 7:00 p.m. and the board meetng at 8 :00 p.m. The meetng was adjourned to meet at the home of Marjore Burdck on Monday evenng, October 2, '.

And Paul demonstrated, as perhaps no other has done, snce, the sense of duty and oblgaton whch Jesus expressed n Hs " must!" Lsten to ths quotaton from Dr. Cuyler: When Paul sad, " am debtor both to the Greeks and to the barbarans, both to the wse and to the unwse," he dd not mean that he had receved anythng from them for whch he was bound to pay them. He had never bought anythng. n ther markets wthout gvng ts pnce; nether had they lent hm any sums on nterest. No human beng had any pecunary clam aganst hm. Nether dd he owe to Greek or barbaran any grattude for favors whch he had receved at ther hands, for n almost every cty n whch he labored he had encountered persecuton and suffered wrong. Not, therefore, on the ground of anythng he had obtaned from them, but solely on the grounds of that whch he had receved fwm another for them, does he acknowledge hmself the debtor. "The glorous Gospel of the blessed God" had been commtted to hs "trust:" he had been "allowed of God to be put n trust wth the Gospel" for ther beneft, and therefore, that he mght be a fathful steward of -the mysteres of God, he was exceedngly desrous of preachng the truth~ as t s n Jesus, to men of every naton and of every degree. He could not honestly hold t back. t had not been gven to hm for hmself alone; and f he had attempted to keep t from hs fellow men, he would have been gulty of the greatest defalcaton, and could not have vndcated hmself ether at the bar of conscence, or at the bar of God. Ths explans the earnestness, the perseverance, and the self-sacrfce of hs mssonary lfe. The House of Bshops of the Protestant Epscopal Church agreed unanmously and wthout debate on September 20 to "explore the possbltes" of a fourway merger wth the Unted Presbyteran Church, the Methodst Church, and the Unted Church of Chrst. Ths does not mean that such a merger s lkely to occur n the near future. There wll be much debate. At the trennal general conventon of t~e Epsc~pal Church there has been agtahon on the part of some to wthdraw from the Natonal Councl of Churches. There has also been consderable dscusson, accordng to the papers, to drop "Protestant" from ther church name. Ths s not a new debate, but a perodc one. Many feel that the hstory of the church n separatng from the Roman (:atholc body s not suffcent justfcaton to keep the term "Protestant" n ther offcal name. Such people clam that ther :hurch s so essentally Catholc n outlook and rtual that the name s a msnomer. Others do not agree. t s lkely, the leaders say, that the church wll try to contnue to be both "Catholc and Reformed." The Rt. Rev.
