Paradox is a word meaning seemingly contradictory statements that are nonetheless true. Some of the greatest teachings of the Christian faith are paradoxes, and Jesus gives three more in our gospel today: Anything you save will be lost; anything you share will be saved; and anyone who takes up the cross will have life abundantly. All baptized Christians are welcome to join in receiving Holy Communion as we celebrate the presence of Jesus among us. As you prepare for worship, please fill out a worship information sheets found in the red folders in each pew. Parents or children are welcome to use our Wiggle Room behind the sanctuary. WE GATHER TO PRAISE THE LIVING GOD *WELCOME AND GREET ONE ANOTHER Lift High the Cross *CONFESSION/FORGIVENESS Let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, confessing our sin and trusting in God mercy. (Silence is kept for reflection.) God of truth, we have sinned and fallen short of your glory. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have neglected the poor, and we have not welcomed all people in your name. Forgive us, and turn us again to you so that we may receive the fullness of your mercy. Amen. In Christ you are freed from your sins and given a place in God s household forever. Amen. 1

3 *PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Gracious God, we live in stressful and uncertain times. Help us know the joy of following you and trusting our burdens to your care. Strengthen us in our desire to take up our crosses and follow you. In Jesus name, Amen WE HEAR THE WORDS OF LIFE READING James 3:1-12 Listen to words from James: Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. 4 Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, 8 but no one can tame the tongue a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. 31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. 34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my 4

5 sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 5

6 WE SHARE IN THE LIVING LORD *PRAYERS Lord of creation, with confidence in your abiding care, we are bold to pray for the world, the church, and all in need. A brief silence. We pray for your church in the world to rejoice in the gift of word and sacrament, that we use our talents and resources wisely to bring good news to all. We pray for the will to create good conversations about how to live well in our communities, that we may fully enjoy the peoples and landscapes you give us. We pray for peace and harmony in your church on earth, that we may all listen to and respect each other. We pray today for children who are hungry and thirsty, that we may help them find loving homes, medical care, and futures that lead to life, not death. We pray for...and all who need the touch of your loving care, that we may take the peace of the Lord with us as we serve others. We pray for the courage to proclaim your grace, mercy, and forgiveness that we may one day sing around your throne with all your saints for eternity. Lord of creation, into your hands we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. Receive our offerings, and make them a sign of our dedication to provide for the needs of all people and creatures, in the name of the one who sustains all things by his word, Jesus Christ our Lord.
