Richard Arthur Muwonge LEAD CATECHIST Evaristo Mary Baguma Sunday, 16th September 2018 Avoid evil practices; indeed, preach against them. Hear your bishop, that God may hear you. Work together in harmony: struggle together, run together, suffer together, rest together, rise together, as stewards, advisors and servants of God. So be patient and gentle with one another, as God is with you. -- St. Ignatius of Antioch TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B The Memorial of Sts. A reading from the Book of Isaiah The LORD GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the LORD GOD helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the LORD GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? 2 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 116:1-6, 8-9 (R. 9) R. I will walk in the Presence of the LORD in the land of the living. Or: Alleluia. I love the LORD, for He has heard my voice, my appeal; for He has turned His ear to me whenever I call. R. They surrounded me, the snares of death; the anguish of the grave has found me; anguish and sorrow, I found. I called on the Name of the LORD: Deliver my soul, O LORD! R. SECOND READING: James 2:14-18; Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. How gracious is the LORD, and just; Our God has compassion. The LORD protects the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me. R. He has kept my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling. I will walk in the presence of the LORD, in the land of the living. R. A reading from the Letter of Saint James What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. The Word of the LORD 2 Remember, Rejoice, Renew

3 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Galatians 6:14 V. Alleluia R. Alleluia V. Far be it from me to glory except in the cross of Our LORD Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. R. Alleluia. Gospel: Mark 8:27-35; You are the Christ the Son of man must suffer many things. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark At that time: Jesus went on with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, Who do men say that I am? And they told Him, John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets. And He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered Him, You are the Christ. And He charged them to tell no one about Him. And He began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took Him, and began to rebuke Him. But turning and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men. And He called to Him the multitude with His disciples, and said to them, If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel s will save it. The Gospel of the LORD. Remember, Rejoice, Renew 3

4 In our Second Reading this Sunday, Saint James challenges Msgr. Gerard Kalumba us in the following words: What does it profit, my brethren if a man says he has faith, but has not works? Faith manifest itself in surrendering our gifts by serving and improving the quality of life of Humanity. Jesus achieved the greatest act of generosity, charity and love through His acceptance of suffering, rejection, death and eventually His overcoming death through the Resurrection. This is the type of Practical Faith that Jesus taught by the example of His life. Actually in the Gospel text of this Sunday Jesus recommends the following; If any man (woman) would come after Me (would follow Me), let him/ her deny himself / herself and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel s will save it. Generosity, charity, love and faithfulness to God the Father is the identity of Christ and anyone who accepts to follow Him. Jesus had asked His disciples about how people identified Him: They told Him that some identified Him as John the Baptist; and others as Elijah and others as one of the prophets. But Jesus became more 4 Remember, Rejoice, Renew THE PARISH PRIEST S REFLECTION Isaiah 50:5-9a James 2:14-18 Mark 8:27-35 THEME: JESUS BY HIS EXTRA ORDINARY WORKS OF SUFFERING, REJECTION, ACCEPTING DEATH AND RISING FROM IT, TEACHES US FAITH IN GOD THE FATHER. Who do men say that I am? What do you think, that people say about My identity? personal to His disciples and He asks: And you who do you say that I am. It is Peter, one of the disciples who identified Jesus as THE CHRIST: You are the CHRIST. After Peter s answer regarding the identity of Jesus, He (Jesus) outlines the characteristics of that IDENTITY, which are suffering, rejection, death and Resurrection. This is identity and its characteristics are the heart of our Christian Faith and the centre of our CREED and the Gospel as preached by the Apostles. St. Paul in the First Letter to Corinthians 15:3ff puts it clearly: For I handed on to you as of First importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins, that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day. This is the centre of the Creed that makes the CROSS outstanding. This is the Gospel of Jesus in which we are invited to profess our Faith, by surrendering our gifts for the sake of the Gospel. We can conclude with the words of Isaiah in the First Reading this Sunday: The LORD God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the LORD God helps me. We are invited by Christ our identity to surrender our gifts for the sake of the Gospel the identity of Jesus Namely the CHRIST. LET US OFFER OUR LIVES TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE LIFE OF HUMANITY. 6 EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS Saint of the Day for September 14 The Story of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Early in the fourth century, Saint Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ s life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over the Savior s tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher on that spot. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. The cross immediately became an object of veneration. At a Good Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table together with the inscription Pilate ordered placed above Jesus head: Then all the people pass through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the inscription, first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move on. To this day, the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the September anniversary of the basilica s dedication. The feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh century after Emperor Heraclius recovered the cross from the Persians, who had carried it off in 614, 15 years earlier. According to the story, the emperor intended to carry the cross back into Jerusalem himself, but was unable to move forward until he took off his imperial garb and became a barefoot pilgrim. Reflection The cross is today the universal image of Christian belief. Countless generations of artists have turned it into a thing of beauty to be carried in procession or worn as jewelry. To the eyes of the first Christians, it had no beauty. It stood outside too many city walls, decorated only with decaying corpses, as a threat to anyone who defied Rome s authority including Christians who refused sacrifice to Roman gods. Although believers spoke of the cross as the instrument of salvation, it seldom appeared in Christian art unless disguised as an anchor or the Chi- Rho until after Constantine s edict of toleration.
