SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST September 16, 2018 a WELCOME b Welcome to all in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit! If you are a guest today, we welcome you and invite you to worship with us again. Please sign our guest register. a ORDER OF WORSHIP b OPENING PRAYER P: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ s sake. Amen. HYMN 446 What Is the World to Me CONFESSION OF SIN P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us: have mercy upon us, and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us a true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. THE KYRIE Out of the deep I call To Thee, O Lord to Thee. Before Thy throne of grace I fall; Be merciful to me. (Hymn 453, vv. 1, 4: Out of the Deep I Call) Lord, there is mercy now, As ever was, with Thee. Before Thy throne of grace I bow; Be merciful to me. 1
THE ABSOLUTION P: Lift up your hearts. The Lord God, according to his promise, is slow to anger and abounding in unwavering love. By the command of Christ and the authority of my holy office I forgive your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO (Glory to God in the Highest) P: Glory be to God in the highest. C: [sing p. 44] And on earth peace, good will toward men. All glory be to God on high Who hath our race befriended! To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended; God showeth His good will to men, And peace shall dwell on earth again; O thank Him for His Goodness! THE SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: [sing, p. 45] And with your spirit. THE COLLECT (Prayer of the Day) C: Lord God, heavenly Father, You sent Your son to be made flesh, that by His death He might atone for our sins and deliver us from eternal death. We pray, confirm in our hearts the hope that our Lord Jesus Christ, who with but a word raised the widow s son, in like manner will raise us on the last day and grant us eternal life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: [sing, p. 45] Amen. READINGS Christian Worship 3-Year Series (All readings from the NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION) The Old Testament Isaiah 50: 4-10 The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. I offered my back to those who beat me, 2
my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me! It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me. Who will condemn me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up. Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God. The Epistle James 2: 1-5, 8-10, My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, Here s a good seat for you, but say to the poor man, You stand there or Sit on the floor by my feet, have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. For whoever keeps the whole law and yet 3
stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith; I have deeds. Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. The Holy Gospel Mark 8: Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, Who do people say I am? They replied, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. But what about you? he asked. Who do you say I am? Peter answered, You are the Messiah. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. Get behind me, Satan! he said. You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns. Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. RESPONSE P: Here end the Scripture readings. C: [sing, p. 46] God be prais-éd for His glad tidings. THE CREED P: Having heard God s Word, we confess our Christian faith using the words of the Apostles Creed. 4
C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. C: [sing, p. 46} Amen. HYMN 494 I Know My Faith Is Founded THE SERMON The Cross...His...Yours Mark 8: HYMN VERSE Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your free Spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; 5
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. OFFERING HYMN VERSE We give Thee but Thine own, Whate re the gift may be; All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from Thee. HYMN 422 "Come, Follow Me," the Savior Spake THE COLLECT P: We thank You, Almighty God, that You have built Your Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Head Cornerstone. Grant that we may be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable unto You, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: [sing p. 58] Amen. THE BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: [sing p. 59] Amen, amen, amen. HYMN 471 Jesus! And Shall It Ever Be CLOSING PRAYER P: O Lord, we render unto You our heartfelt thanks that You have taught us what You would have us believe and do. Help us, O God, by Your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ, to keep Your Word in pure hearts, that we thereby may be strengthened in faith, perfected in holiness, and comforted in life and death. Amen. Organist: Darek Hartwig 6
