Edward and Lucy teaches, proclaims and lives the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do so through the celebration of the Eucharist, the administration of the sacraments and in loving and merciful service to all.
2 We welcome Fr. George Knab, OMI to the parish this weekend. Father is here representing Unbound, an organization that pairs sponsors with children and older adults in the developing world. It s a simple procedure that puts you in touch with a real person in need. Father will bring with him folders for a number of people that we can help with our support and with our prayers. Take time to listen to Father and then to investigate the people who could use our personal attention and support after Mass. Welcome, Fr. George...I attended a meeting for Catholic Charities last week in Akron. This is in preparation for the Drive that all parishes of the diocese will participate in the weekend of February 9/10. Last year the people of our diocese made a $4.5 million commitment during the In-pew process and the total from all sources was $14 million from 50,000 donors. The average gift was $ As you know, we have one of the oldest and largest Catholic Charities organization in the country. For over 100 years we have banded together to provide help to millions of people. It s incredible how much is accomplished by our Catholic Charities in our name. Every day we support feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, sheltering the homeless, counseling the doubtful and the rest of the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. And it s all done in our name as we are blessed to do them to the Lord, himself. I was challenged to increase the number of donors in our parish this year and encourage more parishioners to respond to helping us do even greater things. Last year 99 out of 334 households contributed to CC (32% participation at St. Edward and 83 out of 260 households contributed at St. Lucy (32%). Please consider becoming part of CC work in our diocese. Catholic Charities provides family individual counseling, drug treatment programs, working with our Samaritans on food baskets, as well as programs in our senior centers, etc. Their offices are located on route 44 as you enter Chardon. Please make your gift to Catholic Charities an important part of your Catholic giving...have you visited the website yet? They have an interesting article this week about the health benefits of joining the choir; and another on the health benefits from church attendance. Check them out!...for those who participated in Fr. Gaitely s 33 Days Retreat, plans are being made for another spiritual program this spring. Watch the bulletin for more details. IT S A MATTER OF LIFE We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, of war, of hatred. When a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other? Mother Teresa 2019 CATHOLIC MEN S CONFERENCE Men of SS. Edward and Lucy, the annual Catholic Men's Conference will be held on March 23, The event will be from 8:00 am with a closing Mass at 4:00pm at The Holiday Inn, 6001 Rockside Avenue, Independence A group of at least 8 men is $34.00 per person. To register just go to the website at CMFNEO and register. Be sure to register under St. Edward parish so we have the reduced rate. Please Deacon Greg if you are going at deacongreg02@yahoo.com. It always is a wonderful time to take time with the Lord and share that with men of the diocese....they have no wine It s interesting to see the way Mary acts during the wedding feast at Cana. She is worried that the wine might run out; in the Jewish society of that day, that would have been a great embarrassment for the newlyweds and their families. She turns to Jesus and expressed her concern in a simple, direct way: they have no wine. Jesus doesn t give her any encouragement; he says it isn t his problem: woman, how does your concern affect me? He says his hour has not yet come: was he on some kind of schedule? But she doesn t give up; she tells the waiters to do whatever he tells them. What s going on here? It looks as though Mary was a widow by this time. The Gospels do not mention Joseph during the accounts of Jesus adult years. At the age of thirty he is still living with her; she probably needed him to support her. She knows her son very well. So, even when he seems to refuse her request, she tells the servers to do whatever he tells them. Mary has that kind of faith that continues to believe even when she does not understand. (We have seen this before in her life.) She did not know what he would do, but she trusted he would do the right thing. And he did! We have all known times in our lives when we didn t know what to do. Things happen to us that make no sense, and we can t find the way. That s when we need the kind of faith that Mary had the faith that enables us to trust even when we don t understand. In times of trouble and confusion we turn to Jesus. (James DiGiacomo, SJ)

4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. It s time to put away all those thoughtful but unnecessary gifts that you received at Christmas. How about helping your church by donating them for one of the 2 Chinese Auctions that we host each year. Just bring them to church and mark them Chinese Auction. What a great way to help your church! A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ROSE HALL AND WINCA HALL RENTALS: CALL THE OFFICE
