2 IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THIS We can't give what we don't have. And we have nothing without God. Therefore, make time to pray today. There is simply nothing more important you will do. Friends, be confident in Christ's mercy and love. Grinnell s First Presbyterian Church runs a program that offers rides to people who have out-of-town medical appointments. There is a need for this program in our area as we have limited medical services and no generally available public transportation. This program open to anyone who expresses a need. The program serves Iowa City, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Newton, and other towns in that radius. The program works as follows: People who wish to utilize the program give two weeks notice of their appointment. First Presbyterian maintains a volunteer driver list. When a request comes, an goes out to the whole list and each person can decided whether or not they are able to drive. There are no expectations about how often someone will drive ( t hough it can be helpful to have a general idea of how available folks are), and no questions asked when people decline a request. Drivers are reimbursed at the following rates: Iowa City: $25 Des Moines: $20 Marshalltown and Newton: $15 All other cities prorated from there. Name: Address: City: I am interested in becoming a member of St. Mary Church Phone/ Please return via mail, the address is on the front of this bulletin, or drop in collection basket. You will receive a registration mailing as soon as possible. Welcome to St. Mary Church! All drivers are covered by the First Presbyterian Church general liability insurance by virtue of being a volunteer for this church-sponsored program. First Presbyterian had a lawyer look at their policy and he assured them their coverage was sufficient. However, First Presbyterian requires drivers to have drivers licenses and car insurance, per Iowa law. First Presbyterian purchased a car seat to use for appointments when there is a child involved, and we have handicapped placards that drivers can use when they are volunteering for the program. If you wish to be a part of this program, may contact St. Mary s Parish Office ( ) and your name will be forwarded to First Presbyterian or you can contact First Presbyterian directly at
3 A fair companion our journey through the Seven Deadly Sins is nearing its completion, but we do have two more Cardinal Sins to investigate. Finally, we arrive at the sin of Gluttony. There is much more to gluttony than merely observing an overweight person and declaring, "I spy the sin of Gluttony yonder!" Gluttony doesn't necessarily have anything to do with weight or eating; even though we most often equate it with eating too much. Gluttony is actually the overindulgence or over consumption of something. It is from Gluttony that the word gulp is derived. Gluttony becomes a sin when the overindulging or over consuming keeps food or other thing from the needy. Gluttony becomes a serious sin when, if in times of war, a person's overindulgence causes another to die of hunger. Gluttony can be described as selfishness; putting one's needs above another's. Our friend, St. Thomas Aquinas took a broader look at Gluttony, including: excessive eating of delicacies and costly foods and experiencing an obsessive anticipation of meals. Thomas lists five ways to commit the sin of Gluttony. Eating too expensively Eating too daintily Eating too much Eating too soon Eating too eagerly The last in Thomas' list is the most dangerous. This is the person that seems to live to eat and drink. It can cause one to lost attachment to health, social, and spiritual pleasures. An old saying comes to mind here. "Everything in moderation." 5 Last weekend the Iowa Knight of Columbus held it s annual State Convention. The Grinnell Council was honored to have two awards from the St. Mary parish. Fr. Ron Hodges was awarded the Chaplain of the Year, for the Davenport Diocese. This honor is based on the exceptional serve that Fr. Has done for both the council of Knights and the St. Mary parish. The second award went to the Bill & Sandra Gruman family, to be named the Iowa Knights of Columbus State Family of the Year. To the left the family is picture with their Family of the Year plaque alongside State Deputy Antonio Banuelos, right, April 7 at the River Center in Davenport. Congratulations to Fr. Ron and the Gruman Family!! The Grinnell Knights of Columbus is honored to present a check to the Poweshiek County ARC. The money has been raised through the generosity of the community and this parish. In the picture, is Grand Knight John Gorman, and Karen Veerhusen-Langerud, Treasurer for the Poweshiek Co. ARC. 7 The Annual Diocesan Appeal is an opportunity for us to be good stewards of God s gifts as we share with other Catholics our treasure and our blessings and show our love for one another. The ADA gives us the opportunity to act together as a family of faith and support the programs and services no single individual or parish can offer by themselves. Your gift is important. Every gift, regardless of size, is vital to the success of the Appeal.
