2 A New Home Well, here we are in our new, temporary home. Thanks everyone for your flexibility and patience as we continue to figure out how all of the details will work. Recently, we've had conversations about what should be done with the Blessed Sacrament. Should it be moved out of the REC and back into the Church during the week? Should the Blessed Sacrament be reserved in one of the RE classrooms? Should the Blessed Sacrament be kept in the tabernacle in the REC?" I've suggested that retaining the Blessed Sacrament will provide us all an opportunity to refresh ourselves on the proper etiquette and behavior we should display in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The REC, although it's not our full time Church it is our Church now. The Blessed Sacrament is in the REC so we genuflect when we see the tabernacle. If the Blessed Sacrament weren't kept in the REC we would bow to the altar because it is the location where the Holy Sacrifice takes place during. The REC is our Church now so we probably shouldn't run around or rough house in the REC during this time. And a great "Thank You!" to Msgr. Frank Henricksen for his kindness and flexibility in covering es in my absence. Thanks Monsignor! May God continue to bless you until come back again! The NEW catering company for the Iowa Speedway, Amricrown, has contacted us ABOUT working a Beverage Tent at the Metallica Concert June 9th! We are still needing worker for the 2pm-8pm shift. Workers would need to be 18 for this opportunity as alcohol and non alcohol beverage bottles/cans will be sold. Please go to the parish website for more information. In addition to the concert conversation I discussed our Hospitality contracts for the race weekends. Some things will be different so there will be learning curve this year. I feel excited for this opportunity as Americrown does Hospitality tents at six other race tracks around the country. One of the BIGGEST change will be the age of volunteers. This company will ONLY allow volunteers that are at least 16 years old. I hope we can continue to get the volunteers we need with this change. Please put June 23/24, July 8/9 & 28/29 on your calendars and keep watching for more details. The Speedway work we do helps fund MANY youth activities AND our Capital Campaign. Contact Crystal DeNeve grinnellstmarydre@diodav.org Current 5th-8th grade students: Join us for an End of Year Bash at Ahrens Park (after school) on Thursday, June 1st from 12-3 PM. Sponsored by FCA and Local Churches. You can ride the bus there or get a ride from your parents. Totus Tuus: because of building issues we will not be having Totus Tuus this year. Since there is not a local opportunity for VBS, Sacred Newton is extending an invitation to St. Mary s families to participate in their VBS. Tracking Mary: Mysteries and Messages will be held June 19-23rd 8:45 am-noon. Registrations are due June 9th and a link is on the front page of our parish website. Current 9th-11th grade students should consider joining DYMC (Diocesan Youth Ministry Council). Check out our website under Faith Formation > Youth Activities for more information. NCYC Diocesan and National Forms are now available to be filled out. More information and forms can be found on our website under Faith Formation > Youth Activities. Summer Opportunities for Students/Families: JH/HS River Tubing: For students currently in 6th grade and older we will be joining others in the Grinnell Deanery as we tube the Des Moines river June 29th. A registration form and more information can be found on St. Mary s webpage under Faith Formation > Youth Activities for more information. CIA Family Style : (Catholics In Action) This Family Style service retreat was new to the Diocese last year and to be held July in Pella this year. Registrations are now available and a link can be found on our parish website under Faith Formation > Youth Activities. Forms should be turned directly into the Diocese. Fundraisers: we need to fund a lot of activities, please keep watching for fundraiser information. We now have an opportunity to serve beverages at the Metallica concert to be held in Newton. Please see the larger announcement for more details. From the Parish Life Committee We have decided to purchase new china for the parish hall as our older dishes have proved to be quite heavy for some of our members and guests and take up quite a bit of storage space. The new dishes will be much lighter and easier for parishioners and guests to handle as well as maintain and store. We would like to ask each family in the parish to purchase a set of dishes, (a plate, mug and saucer, and a bowl), for each member of their family. The cost per place setting is $ The dishes are the line known as Corelle Impression Enhancement. The dishes will be purchased at a significant discount. If you wish to contribute to this cause, please mark on your check dishes. Thank you!
3 Document Shredding: On May 30th, we will have a document shredding company on site to help us dispose of old unneeded documents. If you have any documents you need shredded, you are welcome to bring them to the parish office by 10 AM, TUESDAY MAY 30th and we can have them shredded for you. If you wish to make a small contribution to help offset the cost of this service, you are welcome to as well. Thank you! A persistent drought has left nearly 23 million people across the Horn of Africa without enough to eat. Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official international Catholic humanitarian relief and development agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is present and assisting in these countries right now. Depending on the situation, CRS may be providing food, water, health services, seeds, tools and fishing nets to help in their recovery. Please prayerfully consider giving to the special collection to benefit the areas affected by the East African famine on the weekend of June 3-4. Checks are to be made payable to St. Mary s Church with CRS East Africa Famine Relief on the memo line. For more information please visit stories/famine-threatens-east-africa. Marriage Preparation Instructional Programs: The Diocese of Davenport offers several marriage preparation program formats: Sponsor Couple (through your parish), One-day, Weekend (two-day) Vespers and The Ordination of Bishop-elect Zinkula There is a long tradition that the evening prior to the ordination of a bishop that he join together with clergy and laity in praying Vespers or Evening Prayer. That tradition will be honored in the Diocese of Davenport as we prepare to celebrate with Bishop-elect Zinkula his episcopal ordination. There will also be an opportunity for clergy and laity to be present a the actual ordination. Vespers will be celebrated on June 21 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Davenport. Normally this would be celebrated in the Cathedral, however, due to renovation and construction the Cathedral is unavailable. The Episcopal Ordination will take place on June 22 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Davenport. Tickets will be needed for both events and a finite number of tickets will be made available to each parish. When we receive the tickets we will make them known and begin to compile a list of those interested in attending. This is probably a once-ina-lifetime event for most of us - being present at the ordination of a bishop - so if you are at all interested we hope you will keep watching the bulletin for more details. To report child abuse contact: Iowa Department of Human Services Child Abuse Hotline: and if it involves clergy or church personnel also notify Alicia Owens, the Victim Assistance Coordinator, ; vac@diodav.org or PO Box 232, Bettendorf, IA Weekend and One-day: August 5-6, 2017: Mt. The registration form and more information can be found on the Marriage and Family webpage ( If you have questions contact Barb Butterworth or A Call to Prayer, Fasting and Advocacy. Because of deep cuts proposed to affect government programs that are vital to hungry people struggling with poverty a three -day fast will begin on Sunday May21st and will continue for one day a month the 21st of each month through the close of the 115th Congress at the end of The reason for fasting on the 21st of the month is because that is the day that 90% of SNAP benefits run out for families. He walked into the 4th grade class, where the children were studying the states, and asked them how many states they could name. They came up with about 40 names. Father William jokingly told them that in his day students knew the names of all the states. One lad raised his hand and said, 'Yes sir, but in those days there were only 13 states. Grinnell College will welcome over 100 new international students to campus in August, and the Office of International Student Affairs invites YOU to consider befriending o ne of t he m through Friends of International Students (FIS) a non-residential friendship program. All first year students live on campus, but this program offers a nice way to introduce them to the local culture of kindness! Local FIS Hosts are matched with a student from outside of the U.S., to establish a supportive friendship during their first year at Grinnell (some student/host relationships last longer, but that is a perk not an expectation). This is an awesome opportunity to engage the world, right here in Grinnell! Please visit to learn more! 7 ADA Payments A huge thank you to a family, who through their kindness and generosity, h a ve anonymo u sl y p aid our outstanding ADA balance. Had we not received this gift, approximately $5,800 would have been taken from our general fund to make up the difference! Thank you and God Bless you! A Prayer for Friends Guardian Angel watch over those whose names you can read in my heart. Guard them with every care and make their way easy and their labors fruitful. Dry their tears if they weep; sanctify their joys; raise their courage if they weaken; restore their hope if they lose heart, their health if they be ill, truth if they err, repentance if they fall Amen. Continued Plea As you can see from the ;financial information from last weekend we are starting to not hit our mark for our weekly collection. This isn't something new. We begin suffering from people traveling or taking the summer off but our expenses don't really go down that much during the summer. In some cases our expenses can actually go up during the summer. Please consider making your weekly or capital campaign pledge payment via WeShare. We hope you will be with us for most of the summer and not take the summer off from Church. I hate to be crass about it but we also need your contributions during the summer. Please consider prayerfully making your weekly or capital campaign pledge payments via WeShare. Thank you to those of you who have switched to making your payments via weshare. P o w e s h i e k A n i ma l League Shelter (PALS) is desperately looking for volunteers!
