Baptism of infants is a blessed tradition of the Catholic Church and it s asked that children be Baptized as soon after birth as possible. This ensures the child becoming of God s graces and provides the first sacrament to the baby after birth. A Baptismal class is required for all first-time parents. 3 All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, All Souls Day The yearly trifecta of holidays/holy days will soon be upon us. Halloween has become almost completely secularized but All Saints and All Souls Days remain purely ecclesial days. But at one time they were more closely associated. There are several if not many stories of the development of All Hallows Eve and Halloween. Most of them have to do with superstitions or with ways to ensure a reduction of mischief on the night in question. All Saints and All Souls Days are much more important to us these days. They allow us to celebrate the lives of two groups of important people in our lives. Of course, on All Saints Day we celebrate those who have gone before us who we believe are in heaven and on All Souls Day we celebrate our faithful departed. The reason that it is important for us to celebrate these two groups of men and women is that we need their prayers and they need our prayers. Catholic teaching reminds us that death does not break the ties of friendship that unite us in life. So, if we can pray for each other in life we can pray for each other on death. We should ask for the intercession of the saints in our prayers. Since they are in heaven they are well placed to intercede on our behalf. We can pray for the holy souls in purgatory who are undergoing their final purification, begging God to hasten their release. If our prayers are effective, we would have yet another great friend and intercessor in heaven. Sometimes I pray for "Person X." Enjoy the holy, holidays next week. Don't forget, All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses are on Tuesday, 10/31 at 5:30 PM and on Wednesday, 11/1 at 7:00 AM. BACK TO THE BASICS Don't overcomplicate the faith. Daily prayer. Spiritual reading. Frequent the Sacraments. Devotion to our Lady. Yes, grace is there. Friends, be confident in Christ's mercy and love. ~ Jon Leonetti O h my gosh, it s three o c lock already. A Stewardship Moment Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of October 28/29, 2017 There is one word or command that summarizes today s Gospel: Love. For Jesus there is no distinction between these two commands of loving God and neighbor. One naturally flows from the other. In fact, for Jesus, these commands constitute a way of life for Christian stewards; a unique approach to life and to their relationship with others. Our neighbors include everyone with whom we come into contact: family members, friends, people we don t like, strangers and particularly those most in need of our love and compassion. Love is always for doing well and helping others grow closer to the Lord. What are ways in which we might do better at following Christ s love command? Memories and Memorabilia: Do you have old photos of events and activities sponsored by or held at St. Mary's? No idea what to do with them? Do you have special programs or worship aids or other Catholic memorabilia and its getting moved from one pile to another? Consider donating it to the parish. We will sort through it, add it to what we have, and care for it.

5 Five Ways You Can Cultivate Peace and Work for Racial Justice Pray Together. Visit the USCCB racism page at usccb.org/racism for prayers, liturgical resources, and links to the bishops letters on Brothers and Sisters to Us and What We ve Seen and What We ve Heard, and Bishop Braxton s The Racial Divide, as starting points for reflection on racism. Reach Out Together. Create intentional opportunities for members of your faith community to listen to the stories and experiences of people of ethnicities, languages, and cultures different from their own. The We Are Salt and Light website ( W earesaltandlight.org/reach-out-together ) has numerous resources on encounter, such as Building Relationships, Creating a Culture of Encounter through One-to-Ones and numerous resources on diversity. Bring what you ve learned through reaching out to pray and reflect on the hard questions. Gather with others, including decision makers, in your faith community and ask the hard questions: Does the leadership of our institution reflect the diversity of those we serve? Are the many faces of the diverse body of Christ represented in decision-making processes? How are we inviting and forming leaders? Who is missing around the table? In our worship together, and in activities of our community, do we cultivate welcome, hospitality, and participation for people of all cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds? How do we invite our members to reflect about and understand racism? Privilege? The dignity of all people? Whose untold story do we need to listen to? Are we preaching on, and praying together about, these difficult issues? How are we currently working to change perspectives and address the causes of racism? Learn Together. Make an effort to learn more about racial disparities and the causes of racial tension. Learn about the historical struggle for racial justice in the United States and some of the challenges that remain. In recent years, there has been ample media coverage on disparities in education, housing, employment, the justice system, and other areas. Use the Process for Group Discernment ( WeAreSaltandLight.org/learn-together/process-group-discernment) to draw from your experiences of prayer, reflection, encounter, and study to discern what action the Holy Spirit might be calling you to take as a community. Act Together. Faith communities highlighted at USCCB.org/racism chose to reach across faith traditions, joining ecumenical and interfaith efforts to work together on racial and economic justice. You can discover what efforts might already be happening in your community at the PovertyUSA.org website ( go to P overty Map ). Other communities felt called to commit to practical changes in the ways they practice hospitality, cultivate leaders, and celebrate cultural traditions. Others are just beginning, but are engaging in important encounter and dialogue that can lay the groundwork for future efforts. What is the Holy Spirit calling you to do, together with your family, neighborhood, parish, school, or other faith community? What will be your first step? Adapted from 5 Ways You Can Cultivate Peace and Work for Racial Justice, ToGoForth.org The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be offered during all Masses the weekend of Nov. 25 & 26. This Sacrament is appropriate for an individual experiencing the difficulties of grave illness or old age. It is also appropriate for an individual preparing for surgery.
