3 SPIRITUAL GUT-CHECK The first reading last Sunday was a spiritual gutcheck for every single one of us, and a daily decision all of us have to make. "Decide today whom you will serve." Indeed. Let us pray for our beloved deceased, most especially for Giles Jay who passed away and whose funeral was this past Friday. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Let's decide, today. Friends, be confident in Christ's mercy and love. St. Mary's is starting a new College Outreach Ministry under the Parish Life Commission. 4 Contact Crystal DeNeve We will begin K-12 peer learning classes with Mass on September 26th. Registration information will be out soon. We had a great first night of training with our catechists. We welcome Deb Molitor as the new Pre-k through 6th grade Faith Formation Coordinator. We are still seeking help in the JH & HS classes, please contact Crystal. Reasonably priced at $10 a piece, and measuring 1.5 inches across. The coin is also available in our parish office. All proceeds will go toward the paying down the campaign mortgage.

5 Ooops! Has This Ever Happened to You? The ushers come forward to begin the Offertory collection process. You lean over and ask your spouse if she has the envelope? She replies that she left it on the table for you to put in your pocket. Ooops! No envelope to give this week! In the rush of getting off to church, we all forget the envelope once in a while. Do you know of parishioners who are home bound or who are in a nursing home and can't get to Mass? Please let us know! We don't know necessarily if people move or can't get to Mass. 7 As everyone knows, the Church is again, rocked by another sexual abuse scandal. Sexual abuse is not confined to acts committed by priests, but it might be one of the most horrific type of abuse. Abuse committed by one who should be preaching and displaying the unconditional love that comes from the Father. Abuse certainly comes from others ( teachers, coaches, other ministers, relative, parents ) but abuse by priests is...i'm not sure what the word is, I don't think I know the word for something so terrible. Our Holy Father sent a letter to the whole "People of God" in which he acknowledges the failings of the Church in light of the new abuse revelations. Bishop Zinkula echos the words of our Holy Father is suggesting that we all offer prayers and show repentance for the sins of the Church. Prayer Families, you are encouraged to set aside some time for prayer for the healing of the victims of abuse, in reparation for the sins of omission and commission that have lead to the crisis, and for our own conversion. You might consider: A Family rosary focusing on the Sorrowful Mysteries A Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament Praying the Stations of the Cross, especially on September 14. Fasting Our Holy Father reminds us that fasting opens our hearts to the needs of others and helps us grow in solidarity with them. Fasting can take many forms. Abstaining from meat or another food item. Or abstaining from other actions that distract us from the suffering of others, such as electronic media or other forms of entertainment. The key is to choose something that will remind us of those who have suffered abuse from the hands of the Church. Almsgiving Many of us make use of the Operation Rice Bowl program as a way to offer alms during Lent. During this time it might be possible to donate your time at a program or facility that seeks to help those who are victims of sexual or physical abuse, for example a domestic violence shelter or counseling service. Attend Daily Mass Attending daily Mass and praying for the victims or abuse or even offering the graces of your communion for them. On September 7 and September 28 we will be offering prayers for the Forgiveness of Sins for the intentions of those suffering from the effects of abuse. The key is that we all do something praying for the healing of victims or the repentance of the Church or for the conversion of us all to be more attentive to the needs of others.
