2 Do you or someone you know need help? As part of our 2017 Confirmation Group s Retreat they will be joining the Methodist Church with their Give Back Rally on October 29th. They are seeking projects in the community. Maybe you or someone you know needs help getting things ready for winter around the house. Contact Crystal at or grinnellstmarydre@diodav.org to request help or if you have any questions. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be offered during all Masses the weekend of Nov. 25 & 26. This Sacrament is appropriate for an individual experiencing the difficulties of grave illness or old age. It is also appropriate for an individual preparing for surgery. During the month of October the Church not only observes "Respect Life Month" but it is traditionally a month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In observance of both the Knight's of Columbus will once again be leading the Rosary before the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday. The Rosary will begin at 10:30 AM. Take Away Hunger Next Packing Day: Sunday, November 5, 2017 At the Elks Lodge (720 3rd Ave ) (St. Mary s Team will pack at 1 PM) Please contact Crystal or grinnellstmarydre@diodav.org if you are interested in being a part of a St. Mary s Team. Each Team consists of 12 members that sign up to work for 45 minutes and donates $360 ( $30/person ). Many of our team members are able to pay the $30/person but some are not. Thank you for your help! Join us for Eucharist Adoration in the Religious Education Center from Noon to 1:00 PM on Wednesdays. Eucharistic Ministers: The Worship and Spirituality Commission would ask that you please remember it is your responsibility to c lea n t he v essels aft er Mass. Don't assume that someone else will take care of this; it is part of your duties. Please take the vessels to the kitchen area to wash them out, remembering not to put dish soap directly into the cups as it does not rinse out well, and don t submerge the cups into standing water. Please clean with a wet, soapy cloth, rinse very well and dry. Thank you Baptism Class: Baptism is a special time of preparation within your child s life and in growing their faith. Baptism of infants is a blessed tradition of the Catholic Church and it s asked that children be Baptized as soon after birth as possible. This ensures the child becoming of God s graces and provides the first sacrament to the baby after birth. A Baptismal class is required for all first-time parents. If you are looking to have tour child baptized, please contact the parish office ( ) to help you schedule a baptism class. CARE NOTES: The Social Action Commission reminds parishioners that the Care Notes have been moved to the REC. Several new titles have been added. 4 Everything will be revealed We are all made up of dark and light parts. Not good and bad, but light and dark. In Friday's Gospel, we heard that whatever is done in the darkness will be seen in the light. This is more than just sin, because we all sin. This has to do with thinking that the sin we commit isn't going to be known. It's sort of like we try to fool ourselves. Even worse, we pretend that we don t sin. So we are being duplicitous. But God sees and knows everything. We can fool ourselves but we can t fool God. Isn t it best to say, Yep, I m sinned. I ve done such and such, and then go to confession and ask for absolution? That way, we don t fool ourselves or others, we haven t tried to fool God, and we have had our sins forgiven. RCIA: The RCIA group will meet in the parish office at 5:45 PM on Wednesdays. Everyone is welcome. The upcoming schedule is as follows. October 25, 2017 November 1, 2017 November 1, 2017 November 8, 2017 November 15, 2017 November 22, 2017 November 29, 2017 December 6, 2017 What makes me happy? What s your story, God? Solemnity of All Saints How do I know Jesus is real? Who is Jesus? Why be Catholic? Where am I Going How do I get there? You Cannot Love God and Hate Your Neighbor Scripture teaches: If anyone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen ( 1 Jn 4:20 ). This simple, straightforward teaching constitutes the heart of Christian ethics and is the reason Pope Benedict XVI can say, One is so closely connected to the other that to say that we love God becomes a lie if we are closed to our neighbor or hate him altogether ( Deus Caritas Est 16 ). To love our neighbor, fundamentally, is to respect him or her as a unique person made in the image and likeness of God. If we do not offer this respect to the creature, then we dishonor the Creator. Such a basic truth of the Christian faith must therefore be our guide when we consider the many kinds of people we encounter, people of different races, creeds, and traditions. Memories and Memorabilia: Do you have old photos of events and activities sponsored by or held at St. Mary's? No idea what to do with them? Do you have special programs or worship aids or other Catholic memorabilia and its getting moved from one pile to another? Consider donating it to the parish. We will sort through it, add it to what we have, and care for it. 6 Due to the destructive hurricanes which have befallen our fellow citizens over the past few weeks, St. Mary s will be undertaking a special collection to help. Funds raised will go towards Catholic Charities agencies' efforts to assist families and individuals with shelter, food, and other immediate and long-term recovery needs. This collection will take place NEXT WEEKEND October 28th & 29th. According to Covenant House, each year in the U.S. as many as 2 million youth experience a period of homelessness, and every year more than 5,000 of these young people lose their lives to the streets. MAKE A DIFFERENCE by learning about, and advocating for, youth in your area. U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking ( sistersagainsttrafficking.org ) This particular species is believed to have traveled in troupes. October is " R e s p e c t Life" month. We no longer have a Birthright in Grinnell, that we can lend support to, so we thought it would be a good idea to do something to help another organization that is helping pregnant women and new mothers. We will be collecting the diapers THIS weekend and NEXT weekend ( Oct ). Diapers being collected are for the Babies Room at the Home Health Dept. The Home Health Department provides an incentive program that gives support and encouragement to increase healthy behaviors in pregnant women and new mothers. They offer educational classes related to pregnancy, child birth, infant care and parenting. Thank you so much for your help, it's really appreciated. The Social Action Commission Thank you for your generous response to the request from Bishop Zinkula to make a pledge to the Annual Diocesan Appeal. We are now ***% toward our parish goal of $***. For those who have not returned their pledge envelope, I am asking, as your pastor, to do so next week. We will meet our goal quickly when you respond sooner rather than later! I am interested in becoming a member of St. Mary s Catholic Church Name: The name and address the way you would like it to appear. Address: City: A Prayer for Friends Guardian Angel watch over those whose names you can read in my heart. Guard them with every care and make their way easy and their labors fruitful. Dry their tears if they weep; sanctify their joys; raise their courage if they weaken; restore their hope if they lose heart, their health if they be ill, truth if they err, repentance if they fall Amen. Phone/ Please return via mail, the address is on the front of this bulletin, or drop in collection basket. You will receive a registration packet as soon as possible. Pope Francis launched a worldwide, two-year "Share the Journey" campaign calling on Catholics to 'encounter' migrants and refugees in an effort to break down barriers of fear and suspicion and build bridges of understanding and hospitality. "Brothers and sisters, do not be afraid to share the journey! Do not be afraid to share hope," he said. Many dioceses are sponsoring events in the coming weeks as a part of the campaign. The new website offers ways in which people, parishes, schools and other groups can participate. "Share the Journey" is a call to prayer, to reflection and to action. There are some specific action steps you can take today. One is to contact your members of Congress in support of the "DREAM Act of 2017." Go to Campaigns in support of the DREAM Act. It was recently introduced in Congress as a bipartisan effort to protect immigrant youth who entered the United States as children and know America as their only home. Earlier this month, the Catholic bishops of Iowa sent a letter to our Congressional delegation in support of DACA youth and the Dream Act. We also encourage you to follow up on the bishops' letter by sending one of your own to your local newspaper. Our system will send the letter for you. Direct your browser here for a sample: Campaigns. There is also a new action alert in support of our country's being generous in the number of refugees we admit. You can send a message here: The low numbers being suggested by many do not reflect the need, our compassion, or our capacity as a nation. 10 St. Mary s Parish Special Meeting Parish Council, Finance Council, Capital Campaign Building Project Committee, and Capital Campaign Fundraising Committee October 9, 2017 Religious Education Center In Attendance: Father Ron Hodges, Joe Bagnoli, Sheryl Bissen, Clem Bodensteiner, Tom Cirks, Dennis Crawford, Crystal DeNeve, Brad Donohoe, Brent Flander, Al Frischmeyer, Mark Godar, John Gorman, Julie Kracht, Lee McFee, Bill McNally, Sharon Mealey, Jim Miller, Marilyn Parry, Joel Smith, Kathy Utech Absent: Deacon John Osborne, Steve Bernemann, Renny Crawford, Dave Cunningham, Bill Gruman, Scott Keenen, John Landkamer, Patsy Probasco, Lucy Schmidt, Mike Sims, Jennifer Williams, Scot Wilson The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Father Ron. The opening prayer was led by Father Ron. Father Ron stated the purpose of the meeting was to have a discussion regarding the budget for the Capital Campaign building project. Father Ron turned the discussion over to Joe Bagnoli, Chairperson of the Capital Campaign Building Project Committee ( B PC ). General Discussion ( Joe Bagnoli ) Joe stated that parishioner Mark Godar is monitoring the progress of the construction work. At this point some decisions need to be made so that the contractors do not experience any delays in the project that could affect costs. The BPC is seeking immediate budgetary guidance. In a previous meeting of various councils and committees, a budget of $275,000 for unfunded elements of the project was approved with the understanding that the BPC would use its best judgment on additional, necessary expenses to meet project goals. The current total project budget is $2.92M which exceeds current pledges by approximately $350,000. Given this new level of financial commitment, the BPC wanted consultation with the joint committees before reaching pressing decisions on various project elements. Those projects included finishing classroom 03, the choir loft to be covered by a restricted gift pledge, and carpet for the Parish Hall general area ( not in the kitchen ). Less expensive carpet options were considered twice by the BPC before consensus was reached to approve a durable, attractive, mid-grade carpet option. Additional options not in the $350,000 unfunded budget included restoration of the Stations of the Cross and new lighter kneelers As of October 9, 2017, there were $2,506,600 in pledges of which $2,335,580 has been paid. There is still $271,033 left to be paid on outstanding pledges, most of which the Fundraising Committee estimates will be paid over time. Discussion of mortgage and funding options occurred. Joe explained the importance of repairing the stained-glass windows in the Church before new interior paint was applied. If the Parish waited to address the windows later, there would be a chance of damaging the newly painted church interior. Father Ron discussed that we as a Parish will have to continue fundraising efforts to pay off the mortgage. Father Ron envisions working over the next four to six months contacting people who have not paid on their pledge or who made the initial payment on their pledge and did not make another payment. Additionally, new parishioners will be contacted via letter and asked to make a pledge. It is also time to contact the offertory enhancement company and approach parishioners about their ability to tithe. This effort needs to be conducted periodically and has not been done in quite a while. Mark Godar discussed contingency funds which were included in the Capital Campaign budget. Contingency funds are for nondiscretionary purposes ( s urprises that are not known before a project begins ) as well as discretionary expenses ( list of choices ). Upcoming Fundraising Effort ( Joe Bagnoli ) and General Discussion ( group ) Joe presented a Donor Recognition Concept from the Capital Campaign Fundraising Committee designed to inspire increases in pledges and to engage newcomers in the project. A letter of announcement is planned for later this week. Additionally, Joe mentioned that there had been some costs savings due to value engineering with the contractor and parishioners doing some of the work such as carpet removal and subfloor installment in the church building. Families who originally pledged in 2013 should be nearing the end of their pledge payments within the next six months. We could reach out to those families to see if they would be willing to continue their pledge payments for a little bit longer to help reduce the debt.

11 Joel suggested going to Parish families and asking if they could donate a certain additional amount toward this project but cautioned that we don t want to limit the potential amount a family could give. Joe stated that the Donor Window letter should go out around October 15 asking families to decide and communicate their decisions by November 15. By then, however, it will be too late to make timely spending decisions on certain aspects of the project. Therefore, he asked for guidance on a particular level of expenditure the BPC could go up to. The group agreed that new pledges should be used to reduce the mortgage ( not used to increase the project budget ) unless they are restricted for a specific purpose. Marilyn asked about the original budget and how the cost of the project is now different. Joe explained that the original project budget was based on the architect s projections. Until work begins, actual costs can only be projected and may not be exact. Other decisions were made along the way that impacted the budget such as putting brick on the new Parish Hall ( instead of vinyl siding ), retaining the stairs on the front of the church, and addressing the stained-glass windows in the church. Joe explained that the BPC is trying to make good decisions for the entire plant ( Church and Parish Hall ), not just the Parish Hall and sometimes the best decisions required additional expense that was viewed as important to the project goals. He also explained that several things people requested were not included in the project scope in order to keep costs down. Consensus and Decision ( group ) The Capital Campaign Fundraising Committee and the Capital Campaign Building Project Committee recommended to the Finance Council that the Building Project Committee be allowed to proceed with classroom 03, the choir loft with a restricted gift pledge to pay for it, the original mid-grade level of carpet and restoring the Stations of the Cross. The Finance Council approved. The Finance Council then made the same recommendation to the Parish Council. The Parish Council supports giving discretion to the Capital Campaign Building Project Committee to make future funding decisions that are essential to achieving the current building project goals including but not limited to items listed above. Not deemed essential to the goals of the project, the lighter kneelers at a cost of $12,000 were not included at this time. Other efforts including fundraising or a directed donation will have to be pursued in the future to fund items that the BPC cannot justify based upon the new standard of approving only what is essential to realize project goals. Father Ron led the closing prayer. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Marilyn Parry, Parish Council Secretary UNCOMFORTABLE CATHOLICISM Forgiving someone who has wronged you is uncomfortable. Doubling your charitable giving for the year is uncomfortable. Making time for daily prayer each day when you could be doing something else is uncomfortable. Did you think Catholicism would be easy?
