2 Lent! It's just around the corner... Boy, it seems like we just finished putting Christmas away and Lent is already here. That's because we did and it is! Lent is very early this year. It's only about 10 days until Ash Wednesday. It's time to start praying about what God would like each of us to do, accomplish, or be this Lent. Is there something that is keeping us from fully embracing God's love and mercy? Is there something that is keeping us from showing mercy to a friend, spouse, child, parent, or stranger? We have a unique opportunity this year during the Jubilee Year of Mercy to let this Lent to be really life changing. Imagine how freeing it would be if we could work toward repairing a relationship or sharing in God's mercy to someone from whom we've been estranged for years. Imagine how refreshing it would be to really accept GOD'S mercy; let let go of a past sin or embarrassment that makes us think God surely can't love us! Have we been giving up the same thing for Lent for years? No chocolate, no desserts, no caffeine, no alcohol? These are OK but the Church has given us a rare opportunity this year. Pray about the upcoming season of Lent. Ask God to speak a word to you. I pray that during this extraordinary jubilee year of mercy our combined Lents might be truly extraordinary! We are very near fulfilling our goal for the Annual Diocesan Appeal. Thus far we have raised $38,725 in pledges towards our $42,609 goal which means we have $3,884 left to go! Thank you to all those who have participated in this appeal. For those of you who have yet to decide, please prayerfully consider your pledge to the Annual Appeal. Pledge envelopes are available on the back table of the church or in the parish office. 3 Next Packing Day: Sunday, February 7, 2016 (St. Mary s Team will pack at 1 PM) Please contact Crystal or grinnellstmarydre@diodav.org if you are interested in being a part of a St. Mary s Team. Each Team consists of 12 members that sign up to work for 45 minutes and donates $360 ($30/person). Please do not let money prohibit you from being a part of a St. Mary s team. We not only host the event here in the REC but we also help unload the supply truck at noon, which takes about if we get enough people. In addition we are also seeking Refill People these people help keep ingredients and supplies being used full along with loading the truck at the end of the event. Times can vary. There is no charge to these positions and it would be a great way to get service hours in. NEXT Saturday, February 6th RESERVATIONS must be made by THIS Monday, February 1st by 9 am. Thanks to all of you that have signed up to attend or help! All proceeds will be donated to the Capital Campaign. Eucharistic Adoration is the adoration of Jesus Christ present in the Holy Eucharist. It offers a time of quiet and intimacy with our Lord. Join us from 5 to 6 pm for all or part of our time in the sanctuary every Wednesday. Over 1,000 pounds for MI- CAs food pantry. We will b taking donations until Wednesday, Feb. 3rd. The following foods are needed: pasta/canned pasta sauce, canned beans/fruit/vegetables, peanut butter, juice, cereal and oatmeal. Thank you for your support, we can't do it without you. Contracts were recently signed to work with the Spectra Company at the Iowa Speedway. There are three race weekends scheduled for the 2016 Racing season with at least two races each of these weekends. Please keep June 18/19, July 9/10 & 29/30 in mind when making summer plans. A book study is being offered jointly by First Baptist Church, United Church of Christ, and the First Presbyterian Church. This book study is open to anyone interested. The book will be, "The New Jim Crow: Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness and the schedule of meetings to discuss the book will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the stated church below, with refreshments and informal fellowship time at 7:30 for those who would like to stay. The St. Mary s Scholarship applications for students who will be graduating this May and beginning college in the fall are now available in the parish office. The Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting will host the Bishop's for Scouting on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at 2 pm, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport. Bishop Amos will preside. This celebrates Catholic Scouting, including Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls and Boys. All Catholic Scouts, leaders and friends and families of Scouting are welcome. This celebration also acknowledges Catholic Scouts who have recently earned their Catholic Religious Emblem Awards. There will be a brief reception following in the lower level of the Parish Center. 5 Highlights from the 1st Eucharist class last Saturday, January 23! Please keep our young people preparing for this sacrament in your prayers! Guided by the Four Pillars of Conversion, Reconciliation, Discipleship, and Evangelization, the Iowa Catholic Men's Conference is dedicated to building faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. We encourage and challenge men to boldly proclaim the Kingdom of God, the Catholic truths, and living a virtuous life within their families and society. The date has been set for the 2016 Iowa Catholic Men's Conference - from 9-5pm on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. We are excited to announce that we have 4 great speakers lined up already, Al Kresta, Jim Blackburn, Dr. Dan McGuire and John Crudele.
