It's hard to be selfish and proud when you're busy being grateful. Friends, be confident in Christ's mercy and love.

During the next seven weeks we will begin our search for those virtues that will help us combat the sins that can defeat us.

2 Well dear companions, we made it safely through our search for the Seven Deadly Sins. We learned how to spot them and how they can harm us. But the best way to combat the Seven Deadlies is to embrace the Seven Virtues. The fact that there are seven and seven is no accident. During the next seven weeks we will begin our search for those virtues that will help us combat the sins that can defeat us. The virtues can be divided into two groups, the Theological Virtues - there are three - Faith, Hope, and Love; and the Cardinal Virtues - Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude. My friends, if we can embrace and master these virtues, we will be seen as living Christian lives. Are you trying to cut down on the paper you use? Finally, let us all pray for an increase in vocations and assist God by inviting men to consider the vocation of priesthood when we encounter likely candidates. The party is on May 5th, from 1-5 p.m., at the Grinnell Rollin Skate Center ( 6th Ave. West ). The Knights will pay for the admission of all students, and skate rental is included. Totus Tuus ( a Vacation Bible School/Camp ) to be held here at St. Mary s July 22-27. K-6th grade will met from 9am-3pm each day and 7-12th grade will meet from 7-9:15pm.

The Totus Tuus Team will be staying in Grinnell starting Saturday, July 21st and we will need to house them and provide meals for them. We will also need help with the K-6 day sessions.

CYC ( Catholic Youth Camp ) from the Des Moines Diocese: Catholic Youth Camp is a sleep away summer camp for students entering 3rd grade through high school graduation. CYC is located just outside Panora IA about an hour from Des Moines. Check out their website at for more information. There is a poster and more information located on a bulletin board in the Parish Banquet Hall and recent campers Lexi Gallagher, Della Pease and the Hartfamily would be willing to share their excitement about their experience. NEW this year CIA ( Catholics In Action ) for 7-9th grade students! CIA will continue to be a Diocesan Service retreat offered for young people in our Diocese. This year the group will stay at St. Mary s in Solon and do work around that area. Keep watching for more details and save June for this exciting event. FYI we will need high school and college students to help lead this event. CIA Family Style will also be based out of St. Mary s in Solon and those dates are tentatively set for July 19-22nd. Keep watching for more details. Adult Formation: Our NEXT Bible Study: A Biblical Walk Through the Mass had began. Please let us know if you are interested in having a summer study. The Next Women's Book study: Heaven Starts Now by Fr. John Riccardo is in Progress. Contact us if you have a book you would like to do after this one. We are going to reserve a spot at the Farmers Market this year again! We are looking for items we might be able to sell and workers. 5 St Mary Catholic Church Parish Council Minutes + April 19, 2018 Present: Dennis Crawford, Brad Donohoe, Joel Smith, Brent Flander, Steve Bernemann, Fr. Ron Hodges, Deacon John Osborne, Al Frischmeyer, Patsy Probasco, Crystal DeNeve, Sharon Mealey, Charles Willenbring, Scot Wilson 1. Opening Prayer led by Scot Wilson at 6:30 p.m. 2. Old Business Christ Our Life Conference Tina Layman was present to encourage Council members to mark September 29/30 on their calendar to attend Conference. She has tickets or they may be purchased on line. Conference will be promoted through bulletin inserts, messages, pulpit presentations, perhaps a YouTube presentation on Smart TV in Center; Council members were asked to promote at the individual meetings. There could be planning for tailgating in parking area, sitting together inside auditorium. Fabulous opportunity to participate in a family oriented NCYC -like event. Parish Center Dedication May 19, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. Mass with Bishop Zinkula, followed by a parish photograph on the church steps, Mary statue blessing, then parties will return to the Center where the Bishop will bless crucifixes to be taken to respective rooms by selected persons, along with a prayer, and those persons will recite the prayer in those rooms and hang the crucifix. All persons will reunite for a closing prayer and then be dismissed to partake in food, beverage and social time. A group has been convened to handle food (hors d oeuvres), 3 rd Degree KCs will handle beverage table (beer/wine), and 4 th Degree KCs will be present for honor guard at Mass. Invitations will be mailed to all parishioners and selected guests. Parish Council Elections One candidate has agreed to run for election as well as the two current members who are up for reelection. The sub-committee would like to have two additional names for the ballot. Biographies of candidates should be into church office by April 25, if possible. Election is to be held in May, however, due to Parish Dedication taking up one weekend, it is possible the election will not be held until first week of June if necessary. Rental Policy Review The rental fee structure has been revised to a tiered concept based on three categories of renters: Parishioner, Church Partner/Civic Organization, Outside Organization. A refundable deposit in the same amount as the rental fee will be required. Partner/Civic organizations will be required to provide proof of insurance as required by Diocese as well as a refundable damage deposit, but will not be charged a rental fee. It was suggested that policy be reviewed in a year. 3. New Business Collection Baskets Discussion regarding possibility of purchasing regular baskets to pass through congregation for collection instead of using the baskets with handles. This matter will be turned over to the Finance Council. Second Collections Brief discussion regarding the types and number of second collections. A consensus that persons always have free will to decide whether or not they want to support any monetary collections for the Church. American Flag in Sanctuary Per Diocesan policy, there is not to be an American Flag displayed in the Sanctuary of any church. 4. Finance Council report None due to the fact that the monthly meeting was rescheduled from April 19 to April Commission Chair Reports and Committee Updates Worship & Spirituality: Met on April 12, reviewed Holy Week liturgies and discussed ways to improve our planning process. Mary statue will be blessed by the Bishop as part of dedication event. High school graduates (class of 2018) will be honored at 9:00 a.m. Mass on May 27. Next meeting May 10. Faith Formation: Two adults and three youth were welcomed into the church at Easter. Twelve youth received First Eucharist. K-12 faith formation will be complete the week of April 23, ending with Catholympics. Our youth and youth at Methodist church will be combining for a service day on April 29 doing service projects for the Grinnell community. Adult bible class still meeting on Mondays and book study meeting on Thursdays; researching if there is interest in some sort of adult study for summer. Catholics in Action (CIA), a Diocesan sponsored activity, will be held this summer for jr. high youth and run by high school youth. The service area will be Iowa City. We will be hosting Totus Tuus July for incoming 1 st through outgoing 12 th graders. Will need help for that week hosting Totus Tuus team and working with the youth people. Crystal is working on forming a college outreach committee that will fall under Parish Life Commission. Plans are underway for a church rummage sale to be held in REC the weekend of June 22/23. A Country Store will be operated at the Thursday night Farmer s Market. Donations must be made in Iowa to be sold at the Store. Proceeds from the Country Store will be split between Faith Formation and Parish.

Budget request for FY2019 would remain the same as last year. Building & Grounds: Met March 21 and April 18. Awaiting quotes for electrical work for outside wiring to Mary statue; have received two quotes for replacement of light switch panel in church. Sanctuary lighting repaired, some lights replaced and redirected to provide better illumination. Ad hoc committee of four parishioners formed to look at ongoing custodial needs of the church, parish hall, educational and office facilities, and make recommendations on how best to maintain our facilities. There is ongoing discussion regarding rainwater runoff from buildings and what needs to be done to divert water away from building. Landscaping work yet to be completed, and Fr. Ron summarized some discussion he has had with Earl May and county water conservationist regarding plantings, etc. for areas around church. Reconstruction work in church basement is proceeding. There have been issues with past electrical in that area, as well as other discovered problems in false ceiling. There are some issues with the work product of the contractor who installed the new cooling unit in the sanctuary. A meeting will most likely be held with representatives of this contractor, Steve Bernemann (chair of Building & Grounds) and Dennis Crawford (Council President). Next meeting June 13. Stewardship Committee: No report 6. Knights of Columbus No report. Fr. Ron was congratulated on being named Chaplain of the Year by the Knights at their State Meeting. Bill and Sandra Gruman family were congratulated for being named Family of the Year at the Knights State Meeting. 7. Pastor s Report Fr. Ron reported that the parish pictorial directories have arrived. There was some overall disappointment in working with Life Touch on this project in regards to follow through, communication, etc. Church only received ten extra directories. Extra can be ordered and purchased for $3 each, and will be advertised in bulletin for those in parish who did not have their photo taken, but who may like to order one. Fr. Ron emphasized that all committee/commission meetings, parish functions, events of any type need to have space reserved with Jay (parish office) and be placed on parish calendar. If an event/meeting is not on the calendar, it cannot be held in the center. Fr. Ron reiterated he nor Jay are going to spend time attempting to resolve issues/complaints that are brought to them in an anonymous way. If any person is sharing issues/complaints brought to their attention by other parishioners, they should identify who those parishioners are. Fr. Ron is in the business of handling confidential information. Fr. Ron reported that he will be having surgery on his foot/ankle on May 31, and will be unavailable for Masses at least two weekends. 8. Next Parish Council Meeting May 17 at 6:30 pm; Opening Prayer: Brent Flander, Closing Prayer: Patsy Probasco. 9.
