3 Help St. Mary's Prepare of Vision 20/20! There have been several articles in the Catholic Messenger recently talking about the Vision 20/20 Initiative that Bishop Zinkula has invited us to engage in. It is going to be an enlightening process that the whole diocese will be able to participate in and benefit from. It will be an exciting chance to enliven our faith and to really help set the course for where the Diocese will be heading in the future. The time is NOW for the Diocese of Davenport to move forward and fill every life with the joy of the Gospel though a fresh encounter with Jesus Christ! Join Bishop Zinkula in opening our hearts to the Holy Spirit through Vision 20/20: From Pentecost to Pentecost. This diocesan-wide effort will begin with Listening Sessions in all parishes, schools, and ministries in the Fall of 2018, followed by Regional Conversations, and then a two-day Convocation in the Spring of At the Convocation, we will celebrate our unity in the joy of the Gospel and identify effective ways in which to share the Good News with others. In the Fall of 2019, we will take the next steps in our parishes, schools and ministries. Finally, there will be a diocesan celebration during Pentecost of 2020 to keep the momentum going. Please prayerfully consider your participation in Vision 20/20. Elsewhere in the bulletin there is information about when and where our preparation sessions and listening sessions will be. I encourage everyone to download the Holy Father's Apostolic Exhortation, "The Joy of the Gospel," and read, skim, or flip through it in preparation for the listening sessions. Please feel empowered to form small groups and discuss the document. All too often it seems that we are about feeling bad about our faith and our Church. Now, maybe more than ever, we need to celebrate what the Gospel calls us to. To be people of joy and hope in what seems like an otherwise dark and cruel world! The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. It is a longstanding tradition in the Church that a Priest may be requested to offer a Mass for a specific intention, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass. With that said, St. Mary s is need of weekday Mass intentions. So, consider having a Mass said for a loved one or a special intention, like a birthday or anniversary. Mass intentions are not restricted to those who have passed. There is a stipend associated for each Mass which is $5. Please contact the parish office for more information or to schedule a Mass. Thank you! CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH To view the Catholic Catechism this week go to: Join us for Eucharist Adoration in the Church from 5:00pm to 6:00 pm on Wednesdays.

5 At Pentecost 2018, Bishop Zinkula called the all of us in the Diocese of Davenport to a convocation that will be held at St. Ambrose University, in Davenport, in June of The purpose of the convocation is to: Celebrate our unity in the Joy of the Gospel Reflect on the call to be Spirit-filled evangelizers Look to the peripheries of our communities Read the signs of the times in the Diocese of Davenport Explore practical strategies for the future Begin to chart our concrete plans for taking next steps Pray for the grace to move forward The bishop has asked, in order for us to be prepared for the convocation, to hold a series of listening sessions. The listening sessions will help to: Assess the landscape in parishes regarding missionary discipleship and evangelization as the diocese prepares for the convocation Provide the basis for discussion and begin to identify participants from each parish as preparations are made for the regional conversations and convocation The listening session at St. Mary Parish has been scheduled for: Sunday, October 28, 2018 from 1:00-2:30 PM in the Parish Center To prepare for the listening sessions, Bishop Zinkula has asked parishioners to prepare themselves with Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel. It s suggested that parishioners form small groups to read and study the Pope s document. There is a good resource from Jesuit Forum for Social Faith and Justice that offers a study guide with guiding questions and suggested meeting formats for small groups. Additionally, there will be a series of large group study sessions. The schedule follows: October 23 October 24 October 25 6:30 PM 11:00 AM 6:30 PM All Large Group Study Sessions will be in Lower St. Mary Hall There are several sources where The Joy of the Gospel can be found. You can visit the diocesan website and download a copy from there. To do so do a Google search for Diocese of Davenport. When you are on the home page scroll down and at the right click on the logo for Vision 20/20. When you are at the Vision 20/20 page scroll down and click on The Joy of the Gospel. There you will find a copy that may be read on your computer or printed to read later.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the Annual Diocesan Appeal 1. What does the Annual Diocesan Appeal ( ADA ) cover? The Annual Diocesan Appeal is the major source of income for the Diocese of Davenport. The Diocese of Davenport is the administrative headquarters for the 77 parishes and 18 Catholic schools in the 22-county area. Priests and Deacons: The ADA covers the expense for priestly and deacon formation, the ongoing education opportunities for these men when serving in parishes, as well as assisting priests with their retirement. Confirmations: The ADA makes it possible for Bishop Zinkula to go to parishes for Confirmation and other events. Annulments: The Diocese of Davenport is one of the few dioceses in the U.S. that covers the expense of annulments so that there is no financial barrier to anyone seeking this process. Ministerial Resources for Parishes: The ADA covers the administration costs for many diocesan programs, such as, Ministry Formation, Catholic schools, Stewardship, Social Action, Catholic Charities, Youth Ministry and so much more. Parish Financial Reviews: The Finance office assists parishes with financial reviews, human resources and annual parish Corporation meetings. Archives: The Chancery houses and maintains the sacramental records and other important parish records for each parish. Expenses covered by the ADA include salaries for all diocesan employees including the bishop, all directors and their staff. 2. Why should I give to the Annual Diocesan Appeal? The Annual Diocesan Appeal is the major source of funding for diocesan ministries and offices. It is only with the support given to the ADA that these ministries are able to exist and flourish. 3. How does our Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Davenport assist the Diocese? The Annual Diocesan Appeal funds the annual operating expenses of the diocesan programs and ministries and income from our Foundation supplements it. Our Catholic Foundation now has a principal of approximately 13 million dollars. Our Foundation will enable the Diocese to be more financially stable for many years to come. Four percent of the Foundation s average financial assets of sixteen consecutive quarters is distributed to ministries the Diocese provides and to Catholic schools each year.

12 A new option for IRA owners that are 70 1/2 and required to take a minimum distribution from their IRA. The new change is called a QCD or Qualified Charitable Distribution. The new change permits IRA owners to make charitable distributions and not have to pay income tax on the RMD on their federal tax return. If you are a high-income individual with more than $250,000 of AGI, you would get the full tax reduction at your highest tax bracket on the RMD plus, you could save 3.8% Medicare tax on interest, dividends, capital gains or rents and royalties. Talk to your accountant for a fuller explanation. Thank you to all those who have donated items for the Country Store for Thursdays at Central Park. If you have not donated items, we welcome any items you wish to donate. Please Contact Crystal if you wish to donate or work at the store. Thank you! A huge Thank You to all those who contributed money and groceries to the Knights Fifth Sunday Food Drive last weekend. Your generosity ids greatly appreciated! Ooops! Has This Ever Happened to You? The ushers come forward to begin the Offertory collection process. You lean over and ask your spouse if she has the envelope? She replies that she left it on the table for you to put in your pocket. Ooops! No envelope to give this week! In the rush of getting off to church, we all forget the envelope once in a while. Check out an easier way to give. Go to Simply go to the home page our parish website at and scroll down to the bottom of the page. It s simple! It s safe! And it keeps God at the top of your giving list!

14 To parents of young children: May we suggest...relax! God put wiggle in children. Don t feel you have to suppress it in God s house. All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on at the altar. They tire of seeing the backs of others! Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priest, choir, and other ministers. Help them find the hymns and prayers in the hymnal or booklets. Sing the hymns, participate in the liturgy and pray. Children learn about worship and liturgical behavior by copying you. If you have top leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, L et the children come to me Remember that the way we welcome children in Church directly affects the way we respond to the church, to God and top one another. Let them know that they are at home in His house of worship. To the members of our parish: The presence of children is a gift to the church and a reminder that our parish is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. Grinnell s First Presbyterian Church runs a program that offers rides to people who have out-of-town medical appointments. There is a need for this program in our area as we have limited medical services and no generally available public transportation. This program open to anyone who expresses a need. The program serves Iowa City, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Newton, and other towns in that radius. The program works as follows: People who wish to utilize the program give two weeks notice of their appointment. First Presbyterian maintains a volunteer driver list. When a request comes, an goes out to the whole list and each person can decided whether or not they are able to drive. There are no expectations about how often someone will drive ( though it can be helpful to have a general idea of how available folks are ), and no questions asked when people decline a request. Drivers are reimbursed at the following rates: Iowa City: $25 Des Moines: $20 Marshalltown and Newton: $15 All other cities prorated from there. All drivers are covered by the First Presbyterian Church general liability insurance by virtue of being a volunteer for this church-sponsored program. First Presbyterian had a lawyer look at their policy and he assured them their coverage was sufficient. However, First Presbyterian requires drivers to have drivers licenses and car insurance, per Iowa law. First Presbyterian purchased a car seat to use for appointments when there is a child involved, and we have handicapped placards that drivers can use when they are volunteering for the program. If you wish to be a part of this program, may contact St. Mary s Parish Office ( ) and your name will be forwarded to First Presbyterian or you can contact First Presbyterian directly at
