3 Praise & Petitions May 27, 2018 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for (Hebrews 11:1-2). Because You Prayed: Ruth Ratzlaff has been moved to rehab near Stanford and our two summer interns are off to a great start (Hebrews 11:1-2)! Health Needs: Continue to pray for Pam Garcia (back surgery), Ruth Ratzlaff (rehab), Doug Peters (hospice), Julie Scales (West Nile Virus rehab), Bob Wiebe (knee replacement), Ron Melendrez (esophagus surgery),alicia Beckett (lung transplant, thigh infection), Stacy Coyle (cancer treatments), Joe and Carol Hannah (dementia/nph rehab), and Pastor Madou (back pain) as they are cared for (Psalm 28:7). Church Life and Ministries: Lift up the Summer Sunday planning team as final preparations are being made for June 10. Also remember Pastor Brent as he continues his sabbatical until early June (Psalm 28:8-9). Community, National and International Concerns: Remember the many military families in our nation as we recognize the Memorial Day Holiday this weekend (Psalm 18:1-2). Andy & Carmen Owen MB Mission in Thailand Pray for: Andy as the Southeast Asia Regional Team Leader and Carmen as the overseer of Member Care for Thailand Freedom Textiles, a discipleship/vocational program for girls from prison For new restrictions in prison to be lifted to allow for ministry and Bible materials (Matthew 28:18-20). READING BINGO We begin our summer reading program (for kids from preschool-age up to those beginning sixth grade this August) on May 27th! We will be playing Reading Bingo! You can pick up your BINGO card with instructions in the Church Library or at Children s Church beginning May 27th. The goal is to encourage our children to use the church s library this summer! MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY will be observed tomorrow and the church office will be closed. BACCALAUREATE Shafter High School Baccalaureate will be held this Tuesday, May 29 at 6:30 pm in the Shafter High auditorium. We encourage graduates and their families and friends to attend. WELCOME VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS! SMBC Volleyball will start playing on Wednesdays instead of Mondays during the summer, beginning this week, May 30, at 7:00 pm in the church gym, with competitive play (men only). Coed Volleyball is June 6. Anyone is welcome! PRAYER FOR OUR CHURCH They devoted themselves to prayer.. Acts 2:42 The first Christians, the first Church, spent time praying together. You are invited to come and pray and lift our Church to the Lord. Each Sunday morning in June there will be members from the Deacon Board in the Fireside room at 10:00 AM. This is not a meeting, program, or class, it is a time to individually ask The Holy Spirit to use us and guide us as a Church. You are welcome to join us. C.E. ANNOUNCES SUMMER PLANS The Board of Christian Education announces that there will be some changes to our summer schedule this year. All Sunday School classes have been cancelled from May 20-July 29. Sunday School and Koffee Klatch will resume on August 5. Children s Church will continue all summer. The C.E. Board has chosen not to offer traditional VBS this summer - instead we are planning two exciting events - Summer Sundays on June 10 and July 15. There will be something for everyone - all ages are invited! Watch for more details to come!

5 VBS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Anyone interested in volunteering at the Community VBS at Valley Bible Church on July 9-13 please contact Melany Millwee at Childcare will be provided for VBS workers, including a pre-school program. TEEN CHALLENGE BBQ FUNDRAISER Kern County Teen Challenge invites you to their annual Top Sirloin BBQ Fundraiser & Special Program on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Teen Challenge Men s Ranch, 650 Riverside St., Shafter. Join them for special music, a guest speaker and stories of transformation. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling SMBC BACKPACK TRIP The Annual Backpack Trip with Pastor Pat has been set for Friday-Sunday, August 10-12, This is an easy to moderate hike in the Kaiser Wilderness above Fresno and is open to men, women and children. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited so reserve your spot with a $5 non-refundable deposit to the church office by July 1. USMB NATIONAL CONVENTION July 24-28, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah Our theme is: Celebrating our Diversity and Unity "You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." 1 Cor. 12:27. Join together with Mennonite Brethren from across the United States as we gather this summer to celebrate our diversity and the mission that unites us. Winnie Bartel will be one of the featured speakers! Registration forms are available in the church foyer or online at USMB Convention COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY If you are a member or regular attender of a Mennonite Brethren, Mennonite, Brethren in Christ, or Missionary Church on the West Coast and attend a college or graduate school on the West Coast and will be at least a college junior, you could be eligible to receive a $1000 scholarship from Mennonite Insurance Services (your home and auto insurance company). NEED FOR THE PHILIPPINES Craig and Debbe Haley will be going to the Philippines at the end of October and would like to take a bunch of hotel toiletries to the people they will be ministering to. Soon we will start collecting hotel soaps and shampoos so please start saving them now. BABY BOTTLES The Bakersfield Pregnancy Center Baby Bottle Donations is continuing now through Father s Day. Collect your change, cash, or checks and place in a special bottle available in the church office. Please contact Sue Frantz for further information. Bottles can be dropped off in the church office. SUMMER CAMP SCHOLARSHIP FUND We have a number of kids that need help to get to summer camp this year. If you would like to give to the Camp Scholarship Fund please contact the church office. SUMMER INTERNS Once again this summer we are blessed to have two wonderful interns; MaKenna Cummings and Molly Enns! They will be serving in a variety of ministries here at SMBC as well as in Community Development with Melissa Bergen. Their support comes from three sources; the SMBC budget, the PDC and the SMBC Intern Fund. Their combined need in our Intern Fund is $3200 and you're invited to be part of that. Please keep them both in prayer as they serve and also consider supporting them financially this summer. AWANA NEED We need a Cubbies Director for next year. This is a vital position in order to offer a program for the club year for our 3 and 4 year olds. If interested please see Katie Wiebe or Craig Haley. Whether we re a little kid looking at adults or adults looking at one another, heroes inspire us. The book of Hebrews is filled with many to choose from!
