The new ritual celebration must be used beginning December 30, 2016, and will be known as the Order of Celebrating Matrimony. Essentially, the prayers used for celebration have been updated, as well as the approved form for vows, and cultural adaptations for this Christian celebration have been revised. A number of years ago, Fr. Norbert Burns, SM, who taught at The University of Dayton, offered some reflections in his course on the theology of marriage. It is meant to be a guide for couples. Be sincere and don t play games with each other. Identify who you are, your values and your professional goals before you get married. The first year of marriage is the most important because behavior patterns are set. Don t get disillusioned when you have problems. Know that there s an art and science to conflict resolution. Keep romance in your life. Set aside at least one night a month to date. Try to always keep humor in your relationship. Never fight at the dinner table or in bed. Try to do things that keep your relationship fresh. Stress the positive. Keep criticism to yourself. We are all conscious of the struggles for married couples these days, given the influence of media, the challenges of raising children in our culture, job security and unemployment, and unforeseen sacrifices that are called for in day to day living. Let us pray for families; for those who seek to live a faithful married life; for a society that protects the sanctity of marriage as an expression of God s loving plan for our world and for our children. Whether we are single or married - or anticipating marriage, priest or religious, we believe God has called us to do some service in the world. Let us strive to live that vocation faithfully. May the peace of Christ live always in your hearts and in your home. May you have true friends to stand by you, both in joy and in sorrow. May you be ready and willing to help and comfort all who come to you in need. And may the blessings promised to the compassionate be yours in abundance. May you find happiness and satisfaction in your work. May daily problems never cause you undue anxiety, nor the desire for earthly possessions dominate your lives. Comprehensive Dentistry 373 Cline Ave SCHOOL NEWS St. Peter s School On September 12, St. Peter s Elementary School will celebrate its 90th anniversary of the blessing of the land, Benediction and groundbreaking by Father Rupert C. Goebel for the construction of the building which now houses grades 1-6. This September, too, the building that currently houses the parish offices, convent, and junior high, high school and San Damiano Hall students celebrates its 58th anniversary. Back in 1958, the school newspaper, "The Key", announced this building as the Dream Come True. With the land purchase of $30,000 and construction costs at 2.25 million, the top two floors of this building became the new home of the Franciscan Sisters. The remaining floors contained science labs, 14 classrooms, a library, cafeteria and a combination gymauditorium. Great care has been taken by maintenance staff, school staff and many volunteers and donors through the years to keep all buildings on campus in excellent condition. These past months, there have been some major improvements throughout the campus grounds. Including all registered students for Montessori Preschool/ Kindergarten, Kindergarten and elementary (grades 1-6), we welcome a total of 248 students to a new school year! In addition, for junior high and high school, we welcome 247 students to the new school year After the Day-5 Enrollment Report is submitted to the diocese in September, we will update you on enrollment status. 5 Page 5 St. Peter s Catholic Church, Mansfield, Ohio September 4, 2016 Confirmation Mass with Monsignor Charles Singler October 9, 2016 ~ 11:30 Fifty of our young people will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with Monsignor Charles Singler on October 9 at our regular Sunday 11:30 Mass. The Church will be unusually full with family and friends of the Confirmandi. Since it is a more solemn occasion, incense will be used! Parishioners with allergies or other sensitivity to incense may want to choose to attend another of our Sunday Masses that weekend. If you have mobility problems, you may also want to choose another Mass that weekend. Our other weekend Masses are Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 7:30 & 9:30 a.m. Please call the Parish Liturgy Office or the Parish Religious Education Office at if you have questions. On Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. there will be a special Mass for the dedication of the Mother Teresa Shrine at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine south of Bellevue, Ohio. Mass at 4:00 will be in the Outdoor Pieta Chapel. After the Mass we will process to the Shrine and officially bless the statue and site. Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing challenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gospel s demands first place. Today s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Philemon s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with unconditional forgiveness but with a counter-cultural, world-shattering change of status as an equal. No, even more a beloved brother in Christ. It s a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes, this Treasures column can seem to be a species of crib-notes for Catholic Jeopardy. Indeed, you may never know when knowledge of our particular vocabulary may come in handy. Such is the case with papal bulls, which conjure up all sorts of images, but are actually not what you might expect. A bull is a papal letter on a matter of great consequence, such as a decision about a crisis in the Church, the declaration of a doctrine, the summoning of a council, or the canonization of a saint. It has a more solemn intention than a mere letter or even an encyclical, a teaching letter circulated through the whole Church. Its odd name comes from the Latin bulla, which is the stamp used to apply a signatorial design to the hot lead, or even molten silver or gold, that seals the decree. The format for the bull is the name of the pope in Latin, followed by the title servant of the servants of God, also in Latin, and then the text. The title of the bull is always the first two words of the text. Some famous papal bulls are Exsurge Domine (Arise, O Lord), written against Martin Luther s Ninety-five Theses in 1520; Munificentissimus Deus (The Most Bountiful God), the promulgation of the dogma of the Assumption in 1950 by Pope Pius XII; or Humanae Salutis (Human Salvation), by which Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council in Rev. Before we accept a commitment such as marriage or parenting, we must plan carefully like the king in today s gospel. These are serious commitments which demand complete self-giving and are not for the faint hearted or selfish.
