3 Eureka! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Thanks for Feedback This coming Tuesday our pastoral staff will begin the analysis of the hundreds of feedback cards we ve received regarding the proposal to take the church tower down, build a bigger lobby, add a steeple and consolidate the parish offices. If you haven t sent your card back, please do so right away or indicate your opinion online at our website. I ll be letting everyone know the results after we count them and read the comments. One frequent comment so far suggests that we help finance the project by selling the house on Salem Lane. In order to do that, we d need to give up the Salem Lane entrance to the property since the driveway would need to be attached to the property if it was to be sold. Since we don t want to lose that entrance, the sale of that property isn t feasible. I appreciate all the people who took the time to write comments, make suggestions and ask questions. Today we continue celebrating Christmas (are your decorations are still up?) with a feast sometimes known as Three Kings Day -- even though the Bible never tells us that there were three or that they were kings. More commonly, the feast is known as the Feast of the Epiphany. An epiphany (the word comes from the ancient Greek word epiphaneia) is an experience of sudden and striking realization. Generally the term is used to describe scientific breakthrough, religious or philosophical discoveries, but it can apply in any situation in which an enlightening realization allows a problem or situation to be understood from a new and deeper perspective. So why do we call the visit of the Magi to the child Jesus the Epiphany? What is the sudden, striking realization that comes about in this feast? It has to do with why Jesus came -- or perhaps more pointedly, for whom did Jesus come? Up until the incarnation of Jesus, the Jewish people believed that the Messiah would come to save them. But the newly evolving community of Jewish people who believed that Jesus was the Messiah were coming to grips with the fact that the Messiah had come to save not only them, but all people. Some in Saint Matthew s heavily conservative community were resistant to gentiles being accepted as members so his description of the Magi from the east (definitely pagan gentiles) was a revelation to his community that from the time of Jesus birth, God s light drew all people to Jesus as the savior of all. The early Christians would see in this account that even the gentiles recognized Jesus as King (thus the gift of gold), as God (thus the gift of incense), and as the Savior who died to give us new life (thus the gift of myrrh, a kind of burial ointment which foreshadowed the death of Jesus). While it would take some time for the gentiles to be fully accepted into the earliest Christian communities, the epiphany that Jesus was for all people was an important one that would shape the history of Christianity, and in fact all of humanity. However you choose to celebrate today s feast, let there be some time for gratitude for Jesus who has come to redeem you! And pray to be open to spreading his light to others so they might be drawn to him through your words and actions. 3

8 T oday we celebrate that the child born in the darkness of night in a lowly manger is revealed as the manifestation (the meaning of epiphany) of God. Christ is revealed in many ways as Lord, as King, as the one in whom God is present and acts. All of these manifestations are lights that shine on Christ, revealing a deeper understanding of who he is. All the readings for today reveal, in a way, a different manifestation of who Christ is for all who believe, the visit of the Magi, the wedding feast of Cana, and the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. First Reading: Isaiah reminds us that the true wealth of the Jewish people lay in its children. No wealth compares: a lavish procession of camels bearing gold or all the riches of the seas cannot come close to the beloved face of one daughter or son. What parent cannot relate to your heart shall throb and overflow at the sight of one s child, especially one who has been threatened, as today s climate of violence has made increasingly frightening? Poor and inferior in many ways, Israel is radiant because of God s presence with her. Responsorial Psalm 72: The hopes of all the world s peoples are ultimately the same for peace, wise leadership, just government. People around the globe will hear LITURGY CORNER SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD January 8, 2017 and sing this psalm today in their own languages, a tribute to the magi who came from afar to worship the infant Jesus. This is the feast of inclusivity; no one was unwelcome at Bethlehem. Second Reading: Christians who hadn t been born Jewish must have felt enormous relief to hear this message to Ephesians. They are in no way secondclass in the new Christian community. Rather, they are affirmed as coheirs, members of Christ s body, and sharers in the promise. What might have been a small, middle-eastern sect can now spread gloriously throughout the world, to everyone. Gospel: The story of the Magi following the star to find and worship the newborn King, stopping to ask Herod, then continuing to Bethlehem where, overjoyed, they find the child with his mother is deeply familiar, and resonates not only because people have heard it so often. Those in the assembly have also pursued quest, with varying degrees of success. They have looked to their own stars, and may have blundered into palaces of evil along the way. But the Gospel brings hope at the journey s end, a new way of being and a return by another way. Feast and Saint of the Week Monday, January 9. Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord proclaims a theophany, a revelation or manifestation of the divine Sonship of Jesus by his anointing and appointment to his messianic office. It is the feast that proclaims the Baptism that elevates believers to the status of sons and daughters of God. Friday, January 13. St. Hilary. Bishop and Doctor of the Church. St Hilary was the Bishop of Poitiers, France, during the era of Arian heresy, and he fought for the correct understanding and expression of the divinity of Christ. He was known as the hammer against Arianism and the Athanasius of the West, after the Bishop of Alexandria who fought the heresy in the East. The Christian world was so divided by Aryanism that Hilary was exiled twice. His great contribution was the successful expression in Latin of the theology about Christ, or Christology, that been developed in Greek. January it the Month of the Holy Name of Jesus. 8

10 Catholics For Freedom of Religion CFFR "Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light." George Washington Bigotry Against Christians in America: Students at the publicly-funded University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are given community service credit for attending Planned Parenthood presentations but not for teaching classes to children in a Christian environment. Students were denied credit because the classes met at a Catholic church and focused on Christian values and beliefs. Alliance Defending Freedom filed a legal complaint alleging the students' Constitutional rights were violated because "no public university should ever use a community service program as a vehicle to advance and instill anti-religious bias." (lifesitenews.com, 11/30/16; liveactionnews.org, 12/3/16) Over the past several years, same-sex activists have targeted Christian small businesses for harassment. Christian florists, bakers, photographers, t-shirt printers, etc. have seen these activists come into their businesses, make demands they knew would put these Christians in conflict with their religious beliefs, then turned to various state governments to punish those Christians who refused to violate their faith. (theresurgent.com, 12/1/16; townhall.com, 12/2/16) Notes to Consider: "Your faith isn't private, and it's more than where you worship on Sundays. It's who you are, and it influences the way you live every day of the week. "But today, efforts are being made to remove religion's moral influence on society by censoring it from the public square. People of faith are increasingly threatened, punished and silenced for simply living according to their beliefs." (adflegal.org) "If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed."
