How will we keep the faith and our parish mission going? Make the Mission A message from Father Jerry This weekend marks the beginning of our Lenten Parish Mission. We are fortunate to have 4 diocesan priests who have formed a mission team and have given missions in our diocese for over 15 years. Although they each have a primary ministry during most of the year, they periodically take time aside to give a mission and share a wealth of experience and pastoral insight in parishes throughout the diocese. They have been well received wherever they have gone. If you choose only one special thing to do this Lent, making the mission would be a wise and very worthwhile choice. The schedule of times and dates is in this bulletin B ig news travels fast, and by now most of you are aware that Fr. Ralph Sommer has been assigned by Bishop Murphy to be the new pastor of St. Bernard's effective this coming June. Although I will miss being the pastor of St. Bernard's, I am very pleased that Fr. Ralph will be succeeding me. He is a fine priest and a very talented man. For the past 12 years he has served as pastor of St. Brigid's Parish in nearby Westbury, which is a large, diverse, muti-cultural community. Despite many challenges Fr. Ralph's leadership has been outstanding. I have no doubt that he will bring that same ability and enthusiasm to St. Bernard's. At the same time I trust that you will welcome him and work with him to continue the good work that has been accomplished during my pastorate. He is coming to a parish of generous, faith-filled people who have always been supportive of their priests. These next few months signal a time of transition for the parish. With that in mind I am putting together a "Transition Team," a group of ten parishioners and a staff member, Sr. Christine, who will work with me and the incoming pastor to provide a smooth transition over the coming months. Aside from assisting me in bringing closure to my term as pastor, they will serve as a resource for Fr. Ralph Sommer in providing information about the parish and feedback from parishioners. Change is an inevitable part of life, and it can evoke a variety of feelings: excitement, anxiety, hope, uncertainty, etc. How we go about this transition time will have an impact on the parish for some time to come. Please join me in praying that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us in the days ahead. Also keep in mind the two upcoming Wednesday Evening Prayer Gatherings on March 13 and March 20 which will focus on change and the arrival of a new pastor for St. Bernard's. I have been assigned by Bishop Murphy to be the new pastor of Good Shepherd Parish in Holbrook beginning this June. While there is sadness in leaving St. Bernard's, I look forward to a new apostolate in the eastern part of our diocese. It is slightly smaller than St. Bernard's, without a school, and in a more rural setting. Good Shepherd is a newer parish having been founded in The current pastor, Fr. Tom Spadaro, is retiring after serving there for 31 years. As I prepare for this new chapter in my life, I ask for your continued prayers for wisdom and strength.. 3

4 4 parish news Catholic Daughters of the Americas Will be presenting their annual Bread and Soup Supper on March 6th, see details on page 9. Please come and support their efforts and make a small sacrifice for the Lenten Season. Girl scout Sunday March 10th is Girl Scout Sunday. All levels of Girl Scouts are invited to attend 9:00am Mass in uniform. Some Brownie Girl Scouts will be receiving Religious Awards. Diocesan Patches will be available. All are welcome to bring a paper good (tissue, toilet paper) for the benefit of St. Bernard s Social Ministry Program. Books for next year s Religious Awards will be available to purchase on Girl Scout Sunday. It is not too early to think about Religious Awards for next year. If you have any questions, please call Ann Tear The Sampson Ministry...read on Are you looking for a way to give to your parish that does not involve money, meetings, or much time?? We are forming a new "Sampson" ministry, named after the strong man of the Old Testament. The idea is to get a list of parishioners who would be willing to volunteer just a few hours during the course of the year to help with setup and clean up of large events, such as moving tables and chairs. Many hands make light work and a group of people who can give just an hour can make a big difference for our parish. An /phone list will be compiled and when an event is coming up a notification will be sent out and anyone who is able to help out will be given specific information. This is a great way to give back to the parish for those who cannot commit to regularly scheduled meetings and events as well as those who like to work in the background and not be in the spotlight. 8 Liturgy corner THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT March 3, 2013 In our vocation to live in Christ and to proclaim and work for the kingdom of God, we are led and empowered by the Spirit to bear good fruit. We are not alone in this mission, but neither is God and we are responsible for cooperating with God s grace offered freely to us. Lent is tilled ground, cultivated by God s nurture through spiritual discipline, inviting us to come to new life at Easter. First Reading: Moses, a refugee in the land, has an experience of God that will change his life. One day while shepherding his father-in-law s flock, Moses catches sight of a bush burning but, mysteriously, not being consumed, so he goes over to investigate. Then and there in that holy place, Moses meets God and receives his call to lead God s people out of Egypt. This text tells us two things about God: 1) he is inexpressible mystery, 2) yet known through his actions on behalf of his people. Responsorial Psalm 103 is a hymn of praise for all God does for his people. The same God who cared for the Israelites and revealed himself to Moses on Mount Sinai continues to care for us today. Second Reading: Paul invites the Corinthians to learn from the experience of Israel in the desert. These Israelites had passed through the waters of the sea at the time of the Exodus and drank of the water the Lord provided in the desert, yet were punished for their grumbling. We cannot take God s gifts of deliverance and salvation for granted. Paul s reference to the rock following the Israelites is based on rabbinic tradition. Rock is an image for God in the Old Testament; Paul transfers this to Christ. At another level, we can see Christ as being the ultimate fulfillment of the story of the water from the rock. Gospel: A tragic incident involving loss of life is reported to Jesus. According to the popular mentality, this was punishment for sin. Jesus warns that a worse fate will come upon those who refuse to take his words to heart and turn from their evil ways (echoes of Paul s similar admonition to the Corinthians in today s Second Reading). Nevertheless, as our Responsorial Psalm points out, God is slow to anger and abounding in kindness. Like the gardener in the parable, he gives every opportunity, every possibility, for growth and bearing fruit. Saints of the Week Thursday, March 7. Saints Perpetua and Felicity. In the year 203, these two women were martyred in the amphitheater at Carthage. Their crime was professing faith in Jesus Christ. Perpetua was a wealthy noblewoman, the mother of a young son; Felicity was a humble slave girl, who gave birth to a daughter just a few days before she died. These women, so different in their circumstances, were united in their death. The names of these heroic women are included in Eucharistic Prayer I, alongside the names of Apostles and martyrs. They lived the Gospel, by praying for their persecutors. Saturday, March 9. Saint John of God was a Portuguese friar who became a leading religious figure. After a period in the army in Spain, he began to distribute religious books, using the new Gutenberg printing press. At one point, John had an intense religious experience that resulted in temporary insanity. He was thrown into a mental institution, and while there, he realized how badly the sick and the poor were treated. Once he recovered, he spent the rest of his life caring for them. In Granada he gathered a circle of disciples around him who felt the same call and founded what is now known as the Hospitaller Brothers of Saint John of God. Sourcebook
