3 No Wine? No Whine! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Government Shutdown Aid If you are one of the federal workers who didn t receive a paycheck this past week and are facing some difficulty in paying essential bills, or are facing a heat vs. eat dilemma, please consider contacting Sister Christine in our Parish Social Ministry Office to see what assistance might be available to you during this time. Sexual Abuse Response Thanks to the Pastoral Council for hosting a conversation about the revelations of sexual abuse in the church. This week s revelations by the Jesuits of the priests who had credible accusations made against them over the past decades reminds us of the number of people who have suffered from abuse over the years. We pray for all survivors of abuse -- not only those who experienced it in church settings. Prayers I m away leading a weekend for couples whose marriages are in distress. Please pray for all involved. I love the story of the wedding feast of Cana for many reasons, but certainly because the back story has got to be funny. Think about it: if you were God and wanted to make your first big move in bringing about your reign on earth, what would YOU choose to do? Cure cancer? Bring world peace? Help the suffering? Forgive sins? I doubt it would be bring wine to a wedding. I suspect that was the case with Jesus. He s just gotten together his band of believers (the apostles) and he s probably got something in mind in order to roll out the new ministry which he s stepped into after many years of carpentry. I really doubt that the first thing on his checklist was to do a miracle involving wine. That might be the reason he says to his mother, Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come. And why does she go to him in the first place when she notices that the wine ran out? (There is no suggestion that throughout his growing years he helped the family by turning sand into flour or stones into steaks.) So why go to him? Well I laughed out loud the other day when someone suggested that the reason they ran out of wine is because Jesus brought all his friends to the wedding and they (with all the other guests) drank all the wine up. Of course she would go to him if she thought his friends were the reason they ran out. In fact she probably was as surprised as the steward as to how he solved the problem. She might have expected him to take his friends over to the local wine merchant and bring back a few extra jugs. But instead, Jesus surrendered his plans for his first sign of the kingdom-come and made a decision at that moment to show God s glory by providing not just enough wine, but over 150 gallons of the finest vintage. And he did the wine without whining. We who are his disciples could learn a thing or two about this, don t you think? There are plenty of opportunities for us to do things we didn t plan on doing or want to do -- without whining. Let s get to it! 3

6 WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY Adult faith formation Each year, the World Council of Churches, including the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world, celebrates a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity between January 18 and 25, which is the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, who first spread the Christian faith throughout the then-known world. This year s Biblical theme is: Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue Churches and individuals of all Christian denominations are asked to pray and work for the unity of all Christians that Jesus himself so urgently prayed for (cf. John 17:20-21) so that the world might believe. It s easy to see how the world DOESN T believe when we Christians ourselves are so split apart that we give scandal to our own faith. Recent popes, especially Pope St. John Paul II, called Catholics to urgently dialogue and act with members of other Christian communities at every level so that together we can better proclaim and exemplify the mission of Jesus in the world. The Graymoor Ecumenical Institute in Garrison, New York, run by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, provides materials to help individuals and parishes pray and act during this week. For a daily scripture and prayer guide that you can use at home, and for many other resources, visit the Graymoor website at week_of_prayer_for_christian_unity/theme_announcement_2019.html. ALPHA IS HAPPENING AGAIN! 9 weeks: 8 Friday evenings March 22 May 24, 7-9 p.m. (Skips Good Friday April 19, and meets Sat. May 4, 1-4 p.m. instead of Fri. Focus on Religious Freedom from Catholics for Freedom of Religion CFFR "Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freedom of speech." Benjamin Franklin How to Crush Free Speech: Facebook: Evangelist Franklin Graham was suspended from Facebook for 24 hours at the end of December for his stand on biblical beliefs that were posted in Graham accused the social media giant of actively "censoring free speech." Even though his account was restored, the suspension raises serious questions as critics ask, if Facebook is willing to block one of the most prominent Christian leaders in the world, then what's next? Apple: Apple pulled a Christian app from its App Store after a small group of 356 LGBT petitioners demanded the app be removed. The app from the online store is designed to help individuals struggling with same-sex attraction. After its victory intimidating Apple, Wayne Besen, director of the LGBT group said, "We demand that Google and Amazon immediately stop selling and promoting this app..." Something to think about: Is freedom of choice in the consumer marketplace becoming an illusion? "Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth." John F. 10 Liturgy Corner THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 20, 2019 The Ride Home This feature is for families to share their thoughts as they travel to and from Church. First Reading The First Reading comes from the portion of the Book of Isaiah known as Third Isaiah, dating to the period when Israelites began returning to Jerusalem from their time in exile. The language is filled with hope and the promise of new life. Israel s situation is totally transformed and the nation s relationship with the Lord is renewed. The marriage imagery tells us that the people have a fresh start, a second honeymoon. Responsorial Psalm 96: If we read the psalm in the context of the First Reading, we can see it as the response of the people of Israel to their renewed relationship with the Lord in the land that he gave them. They respond with joy and praise, recognizing that all the good they have experienced is due to the Lord s power and his mercy. Second Reading: Speaking the oft-divided Church in Corinth, Paul introduces the concept of unity in diversity. He reminds the Corinthians (and us) that, though the Spirit has bestowed a variety of gifts, these gifts have a single purpose: to build up the common good. By placing our gifts at the benefit of the community, Christians build up the Church and the Kingdom of God. Gospel: John calls Jesus first miracle at the wedding at Cana the beginning of his signs. At his mother s urging, Jesus transforms the situation, turning water into wine and changing what could have been a social disaster into a triumph. The seemingly unlimited fine wine calls to mind the pure, choice wine that the Lord has promised to provide on his holy mountain (see Isaiah 25:6) and so his disciples began to believe in him. 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 20, 2019 Adults: When have you stepped in, as Mary did at Cana, to try and make a difficult situation easier for someone? She said: Regardless of who we are and where we came from, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another. We are well aware of how polarizing the issues of border security and immigration are, and at the same time, we have an opportunity to help provide for basic humanitarian needs such as food, clothing and shelter.
