"Atta boy" E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Blog Registration In this week s blog, Father Joe speaks about his experience of baptizing babies. Did you read it? Of course you can go to our new website and click on the The Weekly Blog to see what he wrote OR if you want to get our staff s weekly blog sent to your each week, go to our website and register your to subscribe to the blog. So far over 60 people have registered and we hope you will too. If you re reading this in the car going home (we presume you re not the driver) you can even sign up right now from your mobile device! We hope you ll join your fellow parishioners in getting an inspirational message each week from one of our staff members. And feel free to add your own comments at the end of each blog online. And someone sent in a video of a certain pastor joining the Division Avenue High School Chorus in singing the Hallelujah Chorus. You can see that on our website too! Nothing perks up children better than letting them know that you are proud of who they are or what they ve done. As we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord we hear in today s gospel (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22) that God the Father speaks to Jesus and says, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. This affirmation happens as Jesus is about to step out into a life -changing transition from carpenter to rabbi. And with his Father s blessing, there is no looking back. We have the opportunity to do for others what God the Father did for Jesus. Especially parents. Look for an opportunity each day to say something affirming to your children. No matter how annoying they might be on any given day, surely there is something you can affirm them for. Affirmation is not just for children. We have opportunities to affirm spouses, parents, co-workers, neighbors, friends and those we ve just met. (I ve made it a habit to say something affirming to supermarket cashiers, bank tellers, and even those people who call to say we re going to have a truck in your area in case you want to donate clothes or household items. ) If affirmation doesn t come to you naturally or easily, it would be good to keep a little notebook in which you could write down who you affirmed each day -- that practice will begin to establish the habit of affirmation. But we can t give what we don t have. So before you go out on this mission to affirm others, reflect on God s affirmation of you. God the Father has been wanting you to hear what he told Jesus 2000 years ago: You are my beloved child; with you I am well pleased. BUT, we might object. How can you be well pleased with me since I have these different flaws, weaknesses and sins? While it is true that God isn t pleased with unloving choices we make, still he is pleased with us. After all, we are made in God s image and he loves seeing his image (us) in the flesh. Those who are parents and grandparents understand this. While the kids might be flawed and annoying at times, we are still thrilled to watch how they are growing and loving. So too God looks at us with love and wants us to hear his words of affirmation. He gives us a holy attta boy or atta girl each day. Can you hear this? Do you believe his affirmation? 3

ADULT FAITH FORMATION O Come let us adore him? By Diane Vella As we Christians finish our celebration of the Christmas season liturgically at least with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we sing in joyful praise for the last time, O Come let us adore him, O Come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord!! One of the more beloved Christmas carols of our tradition, this is certainly one of my favorites. But hearing it throughout this Christmas season got me thinking. Have you noticed that in the Gospels Jesus never asks anyone to come and adore him? Not once. To sit with him, to be with him, to pray with him, to listen to him, but never to adore him. And when you think about it, when we speak of the people we love the most, although we might say things like, I just adore my boyfriend, or I adore my grandchildren, we don t really mean adore in the sense that we adore God. And we don t want to be adored in that way, even by those we love the most. No, adoration is not something that Jesus sought, and when you think about it, it makes sense. Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate GOT QUESTIONS?? AWAKEN YOUR FAITH! An informal study and discussion group for people in their 20s-40s All are welcome. No topic off base. Come and bring a friend, you can join in progress! 3 more Sat. Jan. 16, 23, 30, 9-10:15 am OR 3 more Wed. Jan. 20, 27, Feb. 3, 7:30-8:45 pm Youth Ministry Room in the School Building For registration and information: Diane Vella at or dvella@stbernardchurch.org What Jesus DID say in the Gospels, over and over again, was Come and follow me. We will hear this in the Sunday Gospel reading just a few weeks from now. For some of the people of his time, this may have meant literally following him physically, but for them and for us it has a much deeper meaning: follow him in being centered on God; in being loving, compassionate, forgiving, peaceable and reconciling. Follow him in being prayerful and humble and even challenging (with love) when necessary. Following him in being always ready to give of himself to teach and bring about God s reign of peace, love and justice in the world no matter what the cost. Soren Kierkegaard, the 19th century Danish philosopher, once observed that Jesus has many admirers, but few real followers. As we conclude this Christmas season, after we adore him, and after we admire him, let s do what he really wanted: O Come let us FOLLOW him! WHAT DOES THE BIBLE REALLY SAY AND MEAN? Winter Bible Study: The Gospel of Luke For most of 2016 we will hear the Gospel of Luke proclaimed in Church. What does it mean?? 4 weeks, evening or morning, starts Thursday Jan. 14, 7:30 p.m. or Friday Jan. 15, 10:00 a.m. St. Bernard s Parish Center Instructor: Diane Vella, M.A., Pastoral Associate Contact Diane Vella at or dvella@stbernardchurch.org 6

ADULT FAITH FORMATION Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate St. Bernard s S.O.S.! (Sharing Our Support!) Series Pope Francis has proclaimed December 8, 2015-November 20, 2016 A Year of Mercy. In celebration, St. Bernard s will sponsor a series of monthly presentations designed to support families who are facing various challenges in their homes or community. Facing Concerns About Elderly Relatives Wednesday, January 20, 7:30-9:00 p.m., St. Bernard s Parish Center All are welcome. Nora Molloy, LMSW - has been a social worker for 24 years with extensive experience in geriatrics, oncology and end of life. She has worked at the Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, and currently works for MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care visiting patients in their homes and providing emotional support and concrete services to patients, elderly people, and their families. She makes use of her background in spirituality and religion which is very often at the heart of the work with elders and their families. Next Topic: Thursday, Feb. 25 Facing Bullying Nina Glenn, LMSW Words of MERCY from Pope Francis: Hate doesn t overcome any difficulty Over the course of the next year we will feature some thoughts from one of Pope Francis talks or homilies. We invite you to think, talk and pray about what it might be saying to you and to our parish about our MISSION as followers of Jesus Christ as we seek with faith, hope and love to bring the Gospel to the Levittown community and beyond. In families, there are difficulties, but these difficulties are overcome with love. Hate doesn t overcome any difficulty. Division of hearts doesn t overcome any difficulty. Only love is capable of overcoming difficulties. Love is to keep moving forward. From Pope Francis address at the Festival of Families in Philadelphia, 2015 Does anyone in your family have anger-management problems? Get help! (Our parish staff can connect you.) What needs to happen in your family so that love can move you forward? 7

Liturgy Corner THE FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 10, 2016 T he Feast of the Baptism of the Lord proclaims a theophany (a visible manifestation), revelation, or manifestation of the divine Sonship of Jesus by his anointing and appointment to his messianic office. It is the feast that proclaims the Baptism that elevates believers to the status of sons and daughters of God. First Reading: this text is the first of the four poems identified as the suffering servant songs. These poems are meant to be read as an integral part of a whole when they present Israel s mission to be the way to the Gentiles. For Christians, Jesus is the Israelite who is able to fulfill Israel s mission. The presentation of the servant s mission, his rejection and persecution and saving nature of his Death foreshadows the Gospel story of Jesus in an uncanny way. Responsorial Psalm: This is perhaps one of the most ancient psalms. The sons of God are called to acknowledge God as Lord and to adore him, the universe is God s temple which is given glory! All of us are sons and daughters of God; therefore we acknowledge God and come to give him praise and adoration. Second Reading: The reading from the Acts of the Apostles can also be seen to echo aspects of the passage from Isaiah. The God-fearing Cornelius represents the Gentiles who await God s salvation. God has no favorites, or to put it another way, all are God s favorites. Here again the story of God takes the initiative. By sending the Holy Spirit upon all gathered in the house of Cornelius it is a sign that those who are worthy of being baptized become heirs of the Kingdom of God. Also, like the servant in Isaiah they are called to be God s servants and to participate in God s saving mission, each in his or her own unique way. Gospel: The baptism scene of Luke is structured in a similar way to the first servant song. The scene commences with the voice of God addressing an audience, so Luke s account begins with John addressing the people about the imminent advent of Christ in their midst and of his mission. John emphasizes the difference between his baptism and the one that the Messiah will administer. John s baptism is an acknowledgment of sin and repentance while Jesus Baptism conveys the power of the Holy Spirit that will transform those who receive it in new birth in the Spirit. By the same token, one can only receive the cleansing fire and empowering gift of the Spirit when one acknowledges one s sinfulness. God s Word proclaims Jesus and his divine status and relationship to God. We now go into Ordinary Time. They are not termed ordinary because they are commonplace in some way but because they are numbered within the liturgical calendar. In fact, there is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time! In these weeks, we hear proclaimed the wondrous stories of our salvation, stories that we need to burn into our hearts if we are truly to know Jesus, love him, and share him with the world. In these weeks, we have the opportunity to listen to Jesus and learn exactly what it is that we are called to do as his disciples. Sourcebook

The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know that they provide: free pregnancy tests maternity housing with eligibility requirements medical care referrals cribs car seats diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change and return it the weekend of February 13th and 14th. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place.
