3 Teaching With Authority E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Confirmation Retreat Next Saturday, young people in our parish who are preparing for Confirmation will be having a retreat. Toward the end of the retreat day, they ll be joined by their sponsors and will be attending the 5pm Saturday Mass together. Please keep these candidates and their families in your prayers and get ready to squeeze in the pew a little more to make room at Saturday night Mass Got Old Palms? It s time to return them to church so we can burn them for Ash Wednesday s Ashes. Receptacles will be at church over the next weekends to collect them. Please don t put bags in the receptacles, just the palms. I ve been thinking about the teachers I ve had over the years. Most were good, and I grew not only in the knowledge of the subject, but in knowledge of the wider world, and also learned something of myself. Some teachers weren t as good in any of those departments. I could sense the respect my classmates gave the teachers who genuinely cared and could see those who we gave up on. When we hear in today s Gospel (Mark 1:21-28) that the people exclaim, What is this? A new teaching with authority! after Jesus heals a man, it invites us to think about how we teach with authority. No matter how old we are or what our stage in life is, we have a teaching role. Older siblings teach their younger brothers and sisters, if not directly, certainly by example. So the question is, What kind of teacher are we? Do we have authority or not. Authority isn t something granted by another. The people were amazed by Jesus care and healing of the man not because he was a local religious leader. In fact until that moment he was really known as a laborer/carpenter. But he claimed authority not by what he said or others said, but because of what he did. It s the same with us. We are respected because of how we act and what we do. So as this week develops, I d like to suggest that we think about the different ways Jesus acts, and then work toward spreading those works of healing and kindness to those we live with and work with. It s really part of our parish s mission statement, to bring the gospel of Jesus to the Levittown community and beyond. The deeper challenge is if we don t act like Jesus, we lose credibility and authority. As we get ready for the upcoming Lent, it would be good to reflect on where we can change attitudes, behaviors, ways of speaking, etc. and we can pledge to be faithful to our prayer life -- especially by coming to church each weekend to keep holy the Lord s Day. Then, like Jesus, we ll be among the good teachers. 3

8 Liturgy Corner Feast and Saints of the Week Wednesday, January 31. St. John Bosco. Priest. God gifted St. John Bosco ( ) with the ability to read and interpret the signs of the times. Living during raped industrialization and growing anticlericalism, he became very concerned about the emotional and spiritual livelihood of people, especially the plight of the young. St. John worked to provide positive and affirming environments, including orphanages and oratories, where the young could learn and recognize their infinite potential. In the spirit of his favorite hero, St. Francis de Sales, he founded the Salesians, a religious congregation devoted to works of charity, with an emphasis on empowering young people to become strong pillars of faith in a culture of instability. Friday, February 2. Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This Feast is rooted in everyday life. In faithful observance of the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple to consecrate him to the Lord. There they met the righteous Simeon and the prophetess Anna, for whom Temple worship was part of everyday life. God rewarded their fidelity by allowing them to see the one who was Savior and to hold him in their arms. When the ceremony of presentation was completed, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus returned to their hometown. There they created a home and a family life where Jesus grew up, becoming strong and wise and the Grace of God was upon him. According to Luke s account of the Gospel, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah in the Temple and declared him a light for revelation for the Gentiles, and glory for you people Israel. This sparked the tradition of blessing enough candles to last an entire year. This led to candle processions in churches and in the streets, which became known as Candlemas. Saturday, February 3. Although St. Blaise ( 316) and St. Ansgar ( ) were separated by time, they both wanted to care for souls. While serving as Bishop of Sebastea, in Armenia, St. Blaise was a visible witness of the Gospel, which eventually led to his martyrdom during the persecutions of Diocletian. His feast day is commemorated with a blessing of throats because legend says that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. St. Ansgar, born in France, was a monk with a missionary spirit. He longed to travel to distant lands to draw more and more souls to the saving message of Christ. His missionary endeavors were directed toward Scandinavian territory, thus earning him the title Patron of Denmark. He is credited with organizing missions to Denmark, Sweden, and Norway and building the first Christian church in Sweden. Due to his excellent leadership and preaching skills, St. Ansgar was appointed archbishop of Hamburg. Sourcebook 2018 February is the Month of the Passion of Our Lord. Friday, February 2 is the First Friday of the month and is always dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. 8

The certificate is traditionally given to the spouses of retiring military members but is not legally required to be given and is not an official document. Colonel Bohannon consulted others on the base and his command chaplain suggested he file a religious accommodation request that would excuse him from signing the certificate. That request was returned six weeks later "without action." Instead, an off base superior officer agreed to sign the certificate in Bohannon's place. Subsequently, the master sergeant filed a complaint alleging Bohannon discriminated against him by not signing the certificate himself. "No airman... should ever have to forfeit their religious beliefs in order to serve in the military," said a First Liberty Institute attorney. "...The accommodation should have been granted." (military.com,10/27/17; prnnewswire.com, 3/29/17; abqjournal.com, 10/26/17) "a wind is picking up that is hostile to those with traditional moral beliefs." SOUPER BOWL OF CARING FEBRUARY 3-4, 2018 Each year, students and employees from Molloy College travel to the Big Laurel Learning Center in Kermit, West Virginia to run a camp for boys in the area for one week. Kermit continues to be one of the poorest rural areas in the nation. Most of the boys who come to the camp live in extreme poverty. Although they go to school, they struggle with reading and writing. If they graduate from high school, very few go to college. The Big Laurel Learning Center is run by two religious sisters, Sister Kathy O Hagan and Sister Gretchen Shaffer. Besides this camp, the sisters provide programs for the people in the area throughout the year. In addition, Molloy holds fundraisers to raise money to give to the sisters. All of the money raised goes directly to the people. It is an amazing experience that we are so blessed to part of! Thank you again for choosing Molloy College and this very special trip! God bless! Sister Diane Capuano, OP Associate Director of Campus Ministries at Molloy College, Rockville Centre, NY Levittown, Puerto Rico: Thanks to everyone who contributed to our collection for our brothers and sisters in Levittown, Puerto Rico who have been devastated by the recent hurricanes. To date, we have over $3000 from Exercise for Others, $315 from our Christmas raffle, $200 from the children in our religious education program, and over $2,000 from our Giving Tree donations. We will give you an exact total as soon as we have it ready. Remember that our donation will be shared by the two Catholic parishes in Levittown, Puerto Rico. As always, thank you for your extreme generosity! 12
