3 Not Condemning E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Slow but Steady I m now going out to Physical Therapy for my knee three times a week. Most days are good, most night are still bad (hard to sleep) but I m making steady progress. My goal is to be fully operational by Palm Sunday. So keep those prayers (and selfies at church) coming. And once again, thank you to Bishop Murphy for coming to celebrate Mass Wedding Bells We rejoice with the couples who are participating in our Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation this weekend. We wish them happiness in the days and years ahead. Couples who are thinking of getting married at St. Bernard s in the future are encouraged to speak with one of priests or deacons to begin the process. You can read about weddings at St. Bernard online: Marriage I haven t been in church for the past couple of weeks as I m recovering from knee replacement surgery. And I totally understand feelings of frustration. But I heard that while I was out last weekend that some of our faithful were starting to get on each other s nerves. Comments about latecomers to Mass...comments about behavior of children...comments about people sitting in my seat... This week s gospel (John3: 14-21) comes none too soon for the grumpy faithful. Jesus tells Nicodemus, God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Nicodemus is a Pharisee and we know Pharisees specialized in judgment, criticism and condemnation. They had a world view that put people in two categories: the faithful and the unfaithful. Of course they considered themselves to be among the faithful, and if anyone didn t live up to their expectations, they judged them to be less than holy. The devil still tempts us to do that today, and even though we ve heard Jesus criticism of the Pharisees all our lives, we fall for the temptation to criticize others. Sometimes our judgements come out as full sentences, sometimes as a joking quip, sometimes as a sigh, and sometimes we just give others the look. And each time we do those things, I imagine the devil cackling with glee. Another division in the Body of Christ. When Jesus came to save the world, it would have been easy for him to preach non-stop condemnations against all the evil things people did. But as he proclaimed to Nicodemus, he came NOT to condemn. And since we re his disciples, we need to rid ourselves of the behaviors that reveal our judgment and criticism of others. Perhaps you ve rid yourself of chocolate or some other treat this Lent. Jesus words today encourage us to give up critical attitudes as an even more worthy sacrifice. And here s a way to turn from negative judgments: open your eyes and look around for something to praise. For example, while you might be temporarily annoyed at a crying baby, take time on the way out of church to affirm the parents who are bringing that child to Jesus. (They re no more thrilled at the crying than you are, and you ll have lifted them up with a kind word.) See how many kind things you can say in the week ahead. 3

4 Parish News Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion In the award-winning The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman we are swept into a story about extraordinarily compelling characters seeking to find their North Star in a world where there is no right answer. Set in 1918 Australia we meet a lighthouse keeper and his wife who make one devastating choice that forever changes two worlds. 10 Traditionally, this Fourth Sunday of Lent marks a joyful relief amidst the seriousness and somberness of the many weeks of preparation for Easter. Hence, today is called Laetare Sunday, a name that comes from the Entrance Antiphon for this Mass: Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast Even in Lent, a time of fasting and repentance, we rejoice, because we know that God is love, and our loving God will provide for all our needs. First Reading: After the reign of King Josiah, a number of kings have led the people poorly, subjugating the people to the Egyptians. Although Jeremiah has witnessed to Nebuchadnezzar s place as the servant of the Lord meting out deserved punishment against Judah, the unfaithful Zedekiah revolts against Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar destroys both Judah and Jerusalem and the Babylonian captivity begins. After 70 years, Cyrus, the good king of Persia, calls for the rebuilding of the Temple and allows the Jews to return to Jerusalem for this critical task. Responsorial Psalm 137: To lose Jerusalem and the Temple was to lose access to God. The people grieve in their captivity, and their captors demand entertainment from them their laments should be replaced with songs of joy and gladness. But the songs of Zion are songs of Liturgy Corner FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT March 11, 2018 worship, and they would be desecrated if sung outside of the worship of the Temple. Second Reading: The Epistle reminds us that we are saved by the pure and unfettered gift that is the grace of God. We are reminded that it is God who gives, and we who receive by this beautiful passage, and that even if we are dead in our transgressions, as were the people of Judah in their exile, God awaits us with salvific, healing grace. Gospel: Jesus has been conversing with the Jewish leader and teacher Nicodemus, who is both open and curious about Jesus, coming to him in the night and affirming that clearly Jesus must be from God, or he would not be able to perform such signs. Nicodemus wants to understand what it means to be reborn. Jesus begins his answer with a reference to the miracle performed by Moses in the book of numbers, where a bronze serpent on a stick is raised and the people are saved (a confusing passage for Bible scholars given the prohibitions of the second commandment). Jesus, too, will be raised on wood the Cross but his death is one death for the salvation of all, for all time. Verse 16 may be one of the most widely known verses of scripture in the United States due to its appearance in popular culture. SAINT OF THE WEEK Saturday, March 17. Many legends have developed around St. Patrick ( ), from driving snakes out of Ireland, to using the shamrock to explain the Trinity; however, his popularity stems beyond these stories, to his missionary zeal and astonishing ability to inspire faith. He was sold into slavery at a young age and eventually freed, and so he wanted people enslaved by doubt and skepticism to know the liberation found in Jesus Christ. Although he had little education, he was appointed bishop of Ireland. His many accomplishments include the conversion of Ireland, ordination of clergy, consecration of virgins, and organization of missions to evangelize Europe. St. Patrick s life has a universal appeal; therefore, his feast day is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England, the Episcopal Church in America, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He also makes an appearance in the Russian Orthodox calendar. Remember to celebrate this saint and to think of the outreach associated with him. Consider serving at a local food pantry as part of your Lenten concern for the poor. Sourcebook

Children: What are some of the ways that God shows his love for me? How can I show God my love? Focus on Religious Freedom From Catholics For Freedom of Religion- CFFR Update: Turning Lemons into Lemonade at Ohio School District When the atheist Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) threatened West Branch H.S., insisting they ban offering a short prayer at athletic events, and the school district agreed, admitting they couldn't afford a lawsuit, FFRF didn't expect that hundreds of young people would arrive at games with a better idea. "Everybody's really coming together to support the prayer issue," said a local pastor. (Now) we're having more conversations about prayer and the Gospel than we've ever had before." By mid-february over 5,000 "Prayer Matters" T-shirts were sold. More than half the attendees at a recent game were wearing these shirts and, when the team played on the road, the home team they visited made and wore their own "Prayer Matters" tees in a sign of solidarity. Some students have also created "Coexist" shirts, calling out the atheist minority's unwillingness to allow free-flowing ideas on campus. They believe allowing individuals to avoid all encounters with religion should be discouraged since it creates an atmosphere of closemindedness, intolerance, ignorance and hypersensitivity. "All the proceeds will go to any legal fee incurred on this matter," said one parent who helped start the drive to reinstate prayers. First Liberty Institute are now investigating a way to restore religious freedom to these students. Therefore, rather than being discouraged by the FFRF's efforts to censor prayer, a pastor enthusiastically declared, "The opportunities to talk about prayer and the Gospel are tremendous... all because of "No Prayer at Basketball Games!" These students are showing millions of Americans how to thwart the overreach of a special interest minority, just as the Founding Fathers intended.
