3 A Case for Alpha E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Mardi Gras We re offering something new this year as we approach Lent - - a Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner on the Saturday night before Ash Wednesday (March 2 nd ). It will take place right after the 5pm Mass and as an added feature, we ll burn the palms from last year outside the school entrance just before we go in for the dinner. All are invited to join us after the Mass as we prepare the ashes for Lent. We are selling tickets to the dinner (no tickets needed for the palm burning) in order to be sure we prepare the right amount of food and if you didn t purchase them at church this weekend, you can get them at the rectory office til Wednesday or order them online by going to our homepage A Great Success While we were hoping to collect 90 pints of blood at our blood drive last Sunday, we collected 115! Thanks to Ernie and Maryclare Meditz and to all who donated this gift of life. Last fall, a hundred parishioners gathered for eight weeks to share a meal, watch a video, and have a conversation about faith in a program called Alpha. What encouraged me was that while sometimes weekly programs start strong and then attendance lessens over the weeks, Alpha had staying power as people came back week after week because the experience of sharing a meal and sharing faith was comfortable and fulfilling. So we re doing it again this spring. And given how good the first time was, I can confidently recommend Alpha to you, dear reader of this column. Alpha takes place on Friday nights at 7pm and starts with a meal. If you have children, you can bring them along as there is babysitting after the meal and you don t have to cook! In the fall, high school teens came (some with their families) and they ate at the teens table and then went to view the teen video while the adults had their own Alpha experience. People sometimes bemoan that there s nothing for our teens these days... so I ask you to spread the word about our teen Alpha program. If you don t have children (or if they re all grown up) Alpha is for you too. I was happy to see the intergenerational aspect of the program as people of all ages joined in. We did have a table of young parents and another of people in their 20 s but we also had tables of different generations sharing a meal and faith together. Some parishioners who converse primarily in Spanish joined Alpha and there were two tables who shared food and faith in that language. While the videos are in English, we re certainly open to any other language groups coming together to experience this unique program in our parish. Well, actually it s not all that unique in that there are Alpha groups in parishes throughout Long Island and throughout the country and throughout the world! But it was a new experience for us at St. Bernard s and one that I hope you ll be part of this Spring. This semester of Alpha starts on Friday, March 22 nd and registration is necessary so we can prepare the right amount of food and materials. Alpha runs for eight sessions and if someone isn t ready to commit to the whole program, I invite you to consider volunteering your time during one or more of the sessions to help with such things as setting up, serving food, greeting, etc. However you wish to participate you can sign up at church or online. Go to our homepage for the link. 3

4 Parish News Thank you to all the lifesavers who came out to St. Bernard s Winter Blood Drive! Our goal was to collect 90 pints and we received an amazing 115 pints of blood for patients in Long Island hospitals. What an awesome community minded Parish we are! Your donation of blood can save up to 3 lives and your time and efforts were greatly appreciated. If you tried to donate but were unable to for some reason last Sunday, thanks for trying and please try again, we need you! Thanks again to all our lifesavers! The Rosarians will meet on Monday, March 4 at 12:30 in the prayer room of the church where we will pray the rosary together. As members of the Body of Christ we share in the communion of saints when we pray for each other and all those who have gone before us. We will offer our prayers for our Catholic Church and the Pope, all bishops and priests, especially Fr. Ralph, Fr. Joe, and Fr. Innocent and the Sisters of our parish. We will continue to pray for an end to abortion. Our country and its leaders and all those who protect us are included in our prayers. We also offer our own personal intentions. All women of the parish are welcome. 7 Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., St. Vincent de Paul: Thanks to everyone who helps us help our neighbors by providing staple food items and other basic needs of living. As always, we are most grateful! This week our pantry needs include: Canned pasta ( Chef Boy-ar-dee type) Please remember the poor boxes and to buy one, get one free! Special thanks to Boy Scout Troop 189 for their recent food drive and donation to our pantry! The Souper Bowl of Caring: As of Friday, February 15 th, when we submit our column for the coming week, our totals for the Souper Bowl are: $5,371! We will happily accept donations until the end of February and have found a Dominican sister who can personally deliver our check to Annunciation House in El Paso, Texas to further their work with those who are disenfranchised for any reason. We will keep you posted as other donations come in! As always, thank you for your extraordinary generosity! Thanks to our sixth grade religious education coordinator Laura Cardinale, the catechists and the level 7 and 8 students who conducted a bake sale on February 17 th for the benefit of our pantry! We are most grateful! Word has it that they raised $410! Thanks, everyone! For many years, under the leadership of Denise Lownie and later Laura Cardinale, the children have made over 20,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches which are brought to the Mary Brennan I.N.N. soup kitchen, and to our pantry. At the present time, we are looking for someone to take over the leadership of this important service project. Laura would love to mentor a new person (or persons), and would be happy if s/he could meet with her, the children and the other supportive adult volunteers on Thursdays, February 28 th and March 28 th in the parish center at 3:00 to see the project in action. The children meet once a month during the school year to make the sandwiches. If you are interested in learning more, please call our office ( ) and speak to Sister Christine. Thanks to the Levittown Community Council for the food and toiletries donations gathered at their 2019 Winterfest! We are delighted to be able to share these donations with our Levittown neighbors through our pantry! Thanks, again, everyone! Help Wanted: As you may know, children from our parish who are preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation are required to complete community service hours. St. Bernard s Alzheimer s Caregiver Support Group meetings are held on the 2 nd and 4 th TUESDAY of the month from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon in St. Bernard's Parish Center. This program is designed to help each other cope with the challenging situation of dealing with someone with dementia. For more information, please call Sister Maureen Ashe, at

11 Liturgy Corner February 24, 2019 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: The Lord saves Saul s life as he went into the desert with three thousand Israelites to search for David. David finds Saul asleep with weapons nearby. Abishai, who accompanied David in the desert, wants to use the weapons against Saul, but David recognizes him as God s anointed one and refuses to inflict harm on him for fear of divine retribution. David s words at the end of the reading proclaim that the Lord will reward the just and faithful. Responsorial Psalm 103 is a common psalm for Ordinary Time. The refrain from verse 8 makes us mindful of the Lord s kindness and mercy. In the verses, the psalmist blesses and thanks the Lord for all his benefits, especially forgiveness for sins. The Lord has put significant distance between us and our sins. What fatherly compassion we have experienced. Second Reading: We continue a proclamation from the next to last chapter of 1 Corinthians as Paul continues to develop his teaching on Jesus Resurrection. Paul uses the Adam-Christ typology as he speaks about the first man, adam, as a living being and the last adam as a life-giving spirit. The first man was earthly and the second was from heaven. When we live, we bear the image of the earthly man, but in the future, we will bear that of the heavenly one. We will share in Jesus Resurrection. Our eternal home will be in him. Gospel: Jesus Sermon on the Mount continues as he teaches his disciples to love their enemies and bless those who curse them. The way the disciples relate to people is turned upside down by Jesus wisdom. Jesus makes a distinction between what is required of his followers and the way sinners live. His disciples are to extend mercy in the same way the Father does. Sourcebook 2019 Friday, March 1 is the First Friday of the month and is always dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Ride Home This feature is for families to share their thoughts as they travel to and from Church. 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Luke 6:27-38 February 24, 2019 Adults: What has allowed you to overcome obstacles and forgive someone who has hurt you?
