3 Divine Mercy E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Easter Thanks I can only begin to thank the hundreds of people involved in the wonderful celebrations of Holy Week. So many of you have commented at how beautiful the celebrations were and I too was lifted up by everyone s faith and participation. Palm Sunday was a beautiful start -- the weather cooperated -- and the young people who portrayed the gospel at two of our Masses were outstanding. The children s service for Holy Thursday could not have happened without the dedicated group of Moms and teens. The evening Mass also had its special moments and thanks to the Boy Scouts and Knights of Columbus who were the honor guard for the Eucharistic Procession. The music throughout Holy Week was beautiful and moving. Thanks to the Levittown Fire Department for the Easter Fire and to the countless others who shared their time and talents with us to celebrate the holiest days of our year. The second Sunday of Easter is known as The Sunday of Divine Mercy -- as declared by Pope John Paul II -- oh wait, it s SAINT John Paul II now. How fitting that this is the day he is canonized! And another pope, John XXIII is also being canonized today. These two men shaped the course of the church during my lifetime and are examples of God s mercy and love. Saint John s name was Angelo Roncalli -- he was the forth of fourteen children -- he was born in Italy in He did many good things as a priest and then as a bishop but in 1958 at the age of 77, he was elected Pope and in the five years of his pontificate he brought the church into the modern world -- chiefly by calling all of the bishops of the world together in the Second Vatican Council which helped the church to see itself in a new light with a new focus on the People of God. The liturgy was renewed (most notably the Saint John XXIII language of the Mass went from Latin to the different languages spoken throughout the world); greater emphasis was placed on reading and understanding the bible; laypeople were seen as equals in the church; it was recognized that God s presence and action took place not only in the church but also beyond it; and a recognition of religious liberty. Saint John Paul was born Karol Wojtyla in Poland and lived under both the Nazi and Soviet occupation of that country. He became a bishop just before the Second Vatican Council and so was one of the bishops who brought about the renewal of the church. He became pope in Among the greatest achievements of Saint John Paul can be said to be his endorsement of human rights all over the world and he was influential in the downfall of communism. He was the first Pope who visited the famous Jewish Synagogue situated in Saint John Paul Rome and the Auschwitz Holocaust memorial. He also played an instrumental role in the Jewish-Christian reconciliation because his aim was to unite these two great religions of the world. He added the Luminous Mysteries to the Rosary and wrote more than 150 volumes of explanatory encyclicals. Today we celebrate these two newest saints who brought divine mercy to our church and our world in countless and still-unfolding ways. 3

9 Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., St. Vincent de Paul: Our renovations are completed and we are back in busyness! Our pantry is in need of only a few items at this time: Long-grain white rice Bottles of water Cooking oil Condiments mustard, mayonnaise, etc. Paper goods towels, tissues, toilet tissue, napkins Laundry and dish detergent Pampers (4, 5, 6) and wipes As always, thank you for your kindness to our lowincome Levittown neighbors. God bless! Speaking of renovations, we were required to have our pantry shelves six inches off the floor. Ours were four inches! Through the great kindness of Mickey Foss, who originally created our office space in memory of his mother who died shortly after Parish Social Ministry was introduced at St. Bernard s, platforms were built and the shelves are now at their required levels. Thanks to Mickey, his son Michael, and a couple of his buddies, we are in compliance! Special thanks to those who endured the holy chaos during the building process! It was quite a big headache, but we did it! Thank you, Stop & Shop: Rob Altenburger of the Wantagh Avenue Stop & Shop presented us with a check which we split with St. James Outreach. Each program received $1, If you shop there, be sure to thank Rob. He is a wonderful man and works so well with us! In memory/honor of a loved one: People sometimes seek an alternative to sending flowers or a mass card in honor or memory of a loved one or friend, for whatever reason. If you would like to make a donation to Parish Social Ministry in such a case, we have printed cards for the person being remembered, which also indicate that a donation has been made, and by whom. Stop in if you would like to see one of the cards, or to make a donation. As always, thank you! Help is available: We have received many calls in response to the notices in the bulletin about ways to stretch food and utility dollars. We know that many are living on fixed incomes and sometimes choices must be made between food, utilities, rent, mortgages, etc. If you think we might be able to help with one of these programs, we would be happy to chat with you. 10 Liturgy Corner SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (or SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY) April 27, 2014 The Sunday of Divine Mercy is a day established by Pope John Paul II as a perennial invitation to the Christian world, to face with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that humankind will experience in the years to come. This is not a new solemnity or feast, nor does it celebrate a new or separate mystery of redemption, but rather, it leads into the continuing celebration of God s mercy during Easter Time. First Reading: We hear a description of the life of the early believers and what a model it offers to us in their devotion to the Apostles; teaching about Jesus, their commitment to their life in common, their fidelity to prayer and the Eucharist. The witness of their lives filled many with awe. No wonder they attracted new believers! Responsorial Psalm 118: This psalm of thanksgiving and praise celebrates God s mercy and covenant love. Response: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting. Second Reading: We hear Peter s prayer of thanksgiving for God s mercy and the hope and the promise received through the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We may fittingly ask ourselves if the joy Peter and these early Christians experienced is ours. Why or why not? Gospel: The opening lines of today s Gospel tell us much about both the disciples and the Risen Jesus. They are behind locked doors in fear and suddenly the Risen Jesus stands in their midst. Yes, it is really Jesus, but he has changed, his body is different now, no longer having the same limitations as before his Death. Although we may associate seeing and believing with the outspoken Thomas, note that the other disciples as well rejoiced when they saw the Lord. In particular, it was the sight of his wounds that led them to faith. Saints of the Week Tuesday, April 29. St. Catherine of Siena, Virgin and Doctor of the Church. St. Catherine of Siena ( ) was a Dominican tertiary and mystic, the twenty-fourth of twenty-five children. Against family opposition, she dedicated herself to Christ at a very young age. At 16 she withdrew from her family to lead a life of intense prayer. When she emerged, she began to dedicate herself to care of the sick and poor. Her joyful spirit attracted a number of followers. After a series of mystical experiences, Catherine felt compelled to write letters to those in secular and Church authority, which she dictated to her friend, the Dominican Raymond of Capua. Her influence became so great that papal legates consulted her. Catherine died in 1380 at the age of 33, leaving behind her writings, The Dialogue: a Treatise on Divine Providence, letters, and prayers. Friday, May 2. St. Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. St. Athanasius contributed immensely in the areas of doctrine and spirituality. In terms of doctrine, he defended the teaching of the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD) that Jesus was both fully human and fully divine. The Arians, who advocated that Jesus was not divine, unleashed a series of attacks on Athanasius, resulting in his exile not just once, but five times in his life. During one period of exile, he wrote a biography of the renowned hermit and monk, St. Anthony of Egypt. This spiritual classic, Life of Anthony, continues to be a source of inspiration for people longing to remove worldly distractions that prevent them from mystical union with God. Saturday, May 3. Two of the chosen Twelve, Saints Philip and James, grace the liturgical calendar today. Although few details are known about St. Philip, Scripture portrays him as one who leads others to Christ. St. Philip introduces his friend Nathaniel to Jesus, and points to Jesus as the source of nourishment in the feeding of the five thousand. St. James the Lesser was gifted with a special appearance of the Risen Christ (see 1 Corinthians 15:7). Both Saints Philip and James died as martyrs, shedding their blood for the sake of the Gospel. They are most likely celebrated together because the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles in Rome is dedicated to them. Sourcebook
