3 Important Town Meeting E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Car Parade Once again Hempstead Turnpike will be shut down on next Sunday morning during Mass times because of the County Executive Ed Mangano s 7th Annual Cruise to the Show Car Parade. We have been notified that the Turnpike will begin to be closed at 9am -- so for all the families who are attending the Blessing of the Backpacks Mass, please be sure you get to church on time or you may be blocked from coming to church if you live on the north side of the turnpike. Those who are coming to the 10:30am Mass may also be delayed. I have asked the police to interrupt the parade when people are trying to cross to get to church and they will do their best to make that happen. I keep hoping that since the car show is a two day event that some year the parade won t be held on a Sunday morning where it interferes with the Sunday service schedule of the churches on Hempstead Turnpike. Until then, just plan a bit more travel time. Next week our parish will have a very important town meeting and I m asking you to attend. The engineering firm Sanfanandre Justin Architects will be presenting a report that offers recommendations for the renewal of the parking lot, the repair of the leaking tower on the church, and some rather dramatic changes in building use at Saint Bernard s. Our staff received an advance look this past week and I d like you to come to hear what they are suggesting since what we end up choosing to do can have a significant effect on our parish life. This presentation will be the very first step in beginning a process to decide what to do on our parish property over the next five years. I should mention that the recommendations could lead to a multi-million dollar set of projects so there is no way I could begin to make a decision without the input of parishioners. As you might know, we already have in reserve a half million dollars from the last capital campaign. But depending on what we eventually decide to do, we are going to need to raise more funds. First, however, as a parish community we need to come to a consensus as to what direction to take and the architect s report will get the conversation going. I think it would be a good thing to bring children who are old enough to understand to this meeting. They can see the community in action as we consider the future of their parish. When we include our youth early and often, they have a clearer sense that they are valued members of the parish. So, please join me for ONE of the following Town Hall Meetings in the gym: Sunday, September 25th at 3pm til 4:30pm OR Wednesday, September 28th at 7:30pm til 9pm I think our time together will be thought-provoking, creative, renewing and practical. I really hope to see you at one of these meetings. 3

4 Parish News Next weekend, September 24 th and 25 th, there will be a special collection for St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility to support the special needs of the retired priests in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion In his 2014 novel Gray Mountain John Grisham takes on a serious but generally underreported environmental issue strip mining, otherwise known as mountaintop removal. Coal mining in Gray Mountain is as villainous an industry as insurance companies are in Grisham s The Rainmaker and law firms are in The Firm. At the center of this novel is one of Grisham s rare female protagonists, Samantha Kofer, a Wall Street lawyer given a leave of absence after the Great Recession of 2008, who suddenly finds herself interning at a struggling legal clinic in the desolate, impoverished Appalachian town of Brady, Virginia. Join your fellow parishioners for an informal discussion of this New York Times Best Seller on Wednesday October 12, at 10 AM in the St. Bernard s Parish Center. 6 YEAR OF MERCY OCT NOV A Series of Help and Support Pope Francis has proclaimed December 8, November 20, 2016 a Year of Mercy. In celebration, St. Bernard s will sponsor a series of monthly presentations designed to support families who are facing various challenges in their homes or community. Facing End-of-Life Decisions Sister Alice O Shaughnessy, CSJ, MD Wednesday, September 21, 7:30-9:00 p.m., Parish Center Not to make light of it, but the death rate among humans is 100%. All of us will someday face our own deaths and the deaths of those we love. We never know in advance about decisions that may have to be made to make the dying experience easier: What medical treatment to forego, and when? Who will make decisions for you if you can t or for your loved ones if they can t? The Church offers us guidance in all these matters to make it easier on ourselves and our loved ones then the time comes. Dr. Alice O Shaughnessy, CSJ, is a Sister of St. Joseph of Brentwood the same community of sisters who live in St. Bernard s Convent and staffed St. Bernard s School for many years. Sister Alice is an internist and geriatric medicine specialist, and is the former Medical Director of Good Shepherd Hospice. She has spoken extensively at churches and medical conferences on end-of-life health care. She lives in Seaford with two other Sisters of St. Joseph. Words of MERCY from Pope Francis: Politics must be at the service of the... person Over the course of the next year we will feature some thoughts from one of Pope Francis talks, homilies or writings. We invite you to think, talk and pray about what it might be saying to you and to our parish about our MISSION as followers of Jesus Christ as we seek with faith, hope and love to bring the Gospel to the Levittown community and beyond. All political activity must serve and promote the good of the human person and be based on respect for his or her dignity... If politics must truly be at the service of the human person, it follows that it cannot be a slave to the economy and finance. Politics is...an expression of our compelling need to live as one, in order to build as one the greatest common good. From Pope Francis Address to the U.S. Congress, Washington DC, September, 2015 Do you see the number one goal of politics in our nation as building as one the common good? In this election season, what can you do to promote this very Catholic vision of politics? 6

10 Liturgy corner TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 18, 2016 First Reading: The prophet Amos strikes out at those who exploit the poor and take advantage of those he calls the lowly when they come to the market place. The prophet uses the very words of the dishonest merchants as his judgment against them. His condemnation lies in reminding them that the Lord will not forget their wrongdoing. Responsorial Psalm 113: a hymn of praise using the typical phrase of honor: praise the name of the Lord. The text employs opposites to underline the goodness of God. Second Reading: Paul instructs Timothy to exhort the believers to pray. It seems that Paul expects these prayers of petition and thanksgiving to be done by the community at their common worship. Another reason for prayer is that God desires such prayer. These prayers are for the salvation of others, for God desires everyone to be saved. The prayers of the community are to be offered without anger or argument. Gospel: The parable of the unjust steward presents a lesson about judging wisely worldly affairs in serving God instead of mammon. The commendation of the unjust steward makes the meaning of the parable difficult to grasp. The children of this world are contrasted with the children of light ; the former are good at worldly affairs but the latter are charged with the true wealth that God will bestow on them. Saints of the Week Tuesday, September 20. Memorial of Sts. Andrew Kim-Tae-Gõn, Priest, and Paul Chõng Ha-sang, and Companions. Martyrs. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, approximately eight thousand adherents to the Catholic faith in Korea were martyred. 103 of whom were canonized by Pope John Paul in The canonized martyrs were victims of a particularly heinous series of persecutions happening between 1839 and During this time period, Korea was ruled by an anti-christian dynasty that did everything possible to eliminate Catholic ideology and influence, including the malicious mass murder of Christian missionaries and their followers. Wednesday, September 21. Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. Referred to as the tax collector, he is one of the Twelve Apostles and the evangelist who authored the first of the four accounts of the Gospel. His Gospel has a two-fold purpose: one, to announce that Jesus is the eternal king of all creation; and two, to encourage faith in the face of doubt, especially regarding persecution. We have very little information about him, other than he invited Jesus to his home to dine with societal outcasts (see Matthew 9:9-13), and that he preached the Good News after the Resurrection. Tradition says he began preaching in Judea, then moved onto Ethiopia, Persia, Syria, Macedonia, and possibly to Ireland. He is venerated as a martyr, even though there is no historical evidence to validate this claim. Friday, September 23. Early in life St. Padre Pius of Pietrelcina ( ), a Capuchin priest from Italy, demonstrated an unquenchable thirst for God. While praying one day before a crucifix, he received the stigmata. After an examination by a doctor, it was determined that there was no natural explanation for the wounds. He also experienced other mystical phenomena, including bilocation, and reading the hearts of those who sought counsel and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. These two miraculous gifts enabled him to lead both the sinner and devout closer to God. Upon his death the stigmata were no longer visible. Sourcebook
