3 Town Meeting Today! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Block Party Success Thank you to all who made last Sunday s block party such a success. Sue Maher and her Rennaisance Group did a fantastic job organizing and hosting this community event. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus who grilled throughout the hot and steamy afternoon. Thanks to all who came and brought desserts to share. Congratulations to Jack Mahoney who won the Bernies Big Bucks Raffle -- the final prize was over $7,800. Thank you to all who supported the parish through the raffle. Saint Bernardwear More and more people are being spotted around town sporting our Saint Bernardwear tshirts, golf shirts --and soon our sweatshirts and jackets. Don t be left in the autumn cold. You can order your clothes with the Saint Bernard logo right from our online store at our website and pay with credit card, debit card or using Paypal. We re having a very important town meeting today (repeated this coming Wednesday) for all parishioners as we will hear recommendations for the renewal of the parking lot, the repair of the leaking tower on the church, and some rather dramatic changes in building use at Saint Bernard s given by the engineering firm Sanfanandre Justin Architects who have been studying our parish plant for the past six months. This presentation will be the very first step in beginning a process to decide what to do on our parish property over the next five years. The recommendations could lead to a multi-million dollar set of projects so there is no way I could begin to make a decision without the input of parishioners. As you might know, we already have in reserve a half million dollars from the last capital campaign. But depending on what we eventually decide to do, we are going to need to raise more funds. First, however, as a parish community we need to come to a consensus as to what direction to take and the architect s report will get the conversation going. We re not going to make decisions at these meetings, just listen to the possibilities. Over the next weeks we ll need to discuss these ideas and figure out what direction we want to take. I mentioned last week that it would be a good thing to bring children who are old enough to understand to this meeting. They can see the community in action as we consider the future of their parish. When we include our youth early and often, they have a clearer sense that they are valued members of the parish. So, please join me for ONE of the following Town Hall Meetings in the gym: Sunday, September 25th at 3pm til 4:30pm OR Wednesday, September 28th at 7:30pm til 9pm I think our time together will be thought-provoking, creative, renewing and practical. I really hope to see you later today or on Wednesday evening. 3

6 YEAR OF MERCY OCT NOV Facing Widowhood A Series of Help and Support Pope Francis has proclaimed December 8, November 20, 2016 a Year of Mercy. In celebration, St. Bernard s will sponsor a series of monthly presentations designed to support families who are facing various challenges in their homes or community. Mrs. Judith Pickel Monday, October 17, 7:30-9:00 p.m., Parish Center Whether recently or long ago, when death takes one spouse, the remaining spouse is left without a partner, and life is forever changed. What are the practical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of this new season of life? Join us as we explore the challenges of widowhood for both men and women, and suggest ideas and resources for help. Judith Pickel has been active in ministry in the Catholic Church on Long Island for 32 years, the first twenty as a Director of Religious Education, and the last twelve as Pastoral Associate at the Parish of the Holy Cross in Nesconset. She is also a certified Spiritual Director. Widowed in 2004, Jude was married to her husband Jim for 37 years. She has two children and five grandchildren, and lives in Massapequa Park. Words of MERCY from Pope Francis:...Most of us were once foreigners. Over the course of the next year we will feature some thoughts from one of Pope Francis talks, homilies or writings. We invite you to think, talk and pray about what it might be saying to you and to our parish about our MISSION as followers of Jesus Christ as we seek with faith, hope and love to bring the Gospel to the Levittown community and beyond. In recent centuries, millions of people came to this land to pursue their dream of building a future in freedom. We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners. I say this to you as the son of immigrants, knowing that so many of you are also descended from immigrants. From Pope Francis Address to the U.S. Congress, Washington DC, September, 2015 Why do you think people are sometimes fearful of foreigners?how does the experience of your immigrant ancestors or your own immigrant experience affect how you view foreigners entering our country today? 6

8 Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., St. Vincent de Paul: We are most grateful to everyone who helps us help our low income Levittown neighbors. Our pantry is truly a safety net for almost 100 families and we appreciate our parishioners support. This week, our pantry needs include: Hearty soups Oatmeal Canned pasta ( Chef Boy-ar-dee type) Again, thank you! Please remember the poor boxes and to buy one, get one free! Friends of the Poor Walk: On Saturday, September 24 th, our Vincentians and Charitable KIDZ participated in the Friends of the Poor Walk at Bethpage Community Park. The Charitable KIDZ: The Charitable KIDZ are our young Vincentian teenage community service group which meets throughout the school year under the guidance of Carol and Ted Blach. The group is open to 8 th to 12 th graders (although some have stayed on after high school.) Their Welcome Meeting for the year will be on Saturday, October 15 th in the Parish Center at 10:00. This group is very unique in that parents are welcome to accompany their teens to the meetings and activities, so it is an intergenerational activity! Young people who attend may count their hours of participation toward required community service time for Confirmation or school. Please think about joining this group or encouraging your teens to join. The KIDZ have a good time, make new friends and contribute positively to the life of others. Call our office if you have questions. The is: Charitable KIDZ@aol.com. The Blue Wagon Returns: Just a reminder that our Blue Wagon will return to the 9:00 Family Mass on Sunday, October 16 th. 9 Catholics For Freedom of Religion - CFFR "Out of our memory of the Holocaust, we must forge an unshakable oath with all civilized people, that never again will the world stand silent." President Jimmy Carter, 1979 Shameful Silence by media on Christian genocide: The American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) is calling upon the U.N. to fight and protect Christians and other minorities from genocide at the hands of ISIS. In addition, on August 30, the ACLJ filed suit against the U.S. State Department after they failed to answer a request about what action the administration is taking to respond to, or stop, the genocide. It's been over 5 months since Secretary Kerry declared the ISIS atrocities as genocide. "...it is important that Secretary Kerry act quickly and decisively in advancing at the U.N. the cause of those Christians targeted by ISIS," said ACLJ. More than 1.3 million Christians have fled Iraq and another 1 million fled Syria according to the Knights of Columbus. Archbishop Auza, observer of the Holy See to the U.N., said, "We know of summary executions and mass beheadings, sexual violence, immolations, beheading and crucifixions." Countless thousands have been subjected to rape, enslavement and death. (cnsnews.com, 8/31/16; dailysignal.com, 6/20/16; christianpost.com, 5/26/16) "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Visit Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion In his 2014 novel Gray Mountain John Grisham takes on a serious but generally underreported environmental issue strip mining, otherwise known as mountaintop removal. Coal mining in Gray Mountain is as villainous an industry as insurance companies are in Grisham s The Rainmaker and law firms are in The Firm. At the center of this novel is one of Grisham s rare female protagonists, Samantha Kofer, a Wall Street lawyer given a leave of absence after the Great Recession of 2008, who suddenly finds herself interning at a struggling legal clinic in the desolate, impoverished Appalachian town of Brady, Virginia. 10 Liturgy corner TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 25, 2016 Our Scriptures today invite us to reflect on how we treat those vulnerable and most in need. This would be a good time to reflect on the relationship between those involved in the parish s outreach ministries and those involved in liturgical ministries. The call to help others comes directly from sharing in the Eucharist. It is no coincidence that in the United States, the voices of those in the Liturgical Movement of the Twentieth Century went hand in hand with the call to social justice, exemplified in the lives of people like Dorothy Day and her ministry with the Catholic Worker. First Reading: Amos continues his denunciation of those who ignore the lot of others. In last Sunday s text it was the dishonest rich who care only about their own comfort, ignoring the plight of the poor. He does not condemn their wealth but their complacency. Their wealth allows them to have lavish meals and the best oils; they drink wine from bowls as though there was no end to the abundance they enjoy. Their selfish actions will lead to their exile. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm146 proclaims the faithful love of God who secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry and sight to the blind, loves the just, and protects the stranger. The tone of the text is in sharp contrast to the actions of those addressed by Amos. The nature of God s love will define the mission of Jesus. Second Reading: Paul s letter to Timothy encourages him to be faithful to the commandment of God until the return of Jesus Christ. Paul would know and expect that his letter would be read to the local gathering of believers and so the phrase I charge you could apply to those who listen to the reading of his letter as well as to Timothy. In this vein, the words of Paul s letter are addressed also to us. Gospel: Jesus addresses the Pharisees with a parable that contrasts the actions of a rich man and a poor man. The contrast between those who do not, as noted in the First Reading and the Responsorial Psalm is sharpened by the message of the parable. Jesus does not dwell on the status of the rich man but rather on his being oblivious to the needs of the poor man lying at his door ; he was his neighbor! Saints of the Week Monday, September 26. St. Cosmas and Damian ( 287) were brothers, possibly twins, who practiced medicine without accepting money for their services. They are known in the East as the anargyroi, meaning moneyless ones. As vibrant witnesses to the Christian faith, they were arrested during the Diocletian persecutions. When they refused to renounce their faith and engage in idolatrous worship, they were beheaded and cast into the sea. They are patron saints of twins, confectioners, the sightless, and many medical professions. Tuesday, September 27. St. Vincent de Paul, a French peasant, was ordained in As a parish priest in Paris, he founded a home for foundlings because it upset him to see so many babies abandoned by parents unable to care for them. He founded the Daughters of Charity with Louise de Marillac and the Congregation of the Mission (also known either as Vincentians or Lazarists), both dedicated to helping the poor and visiting prisons. Thursday, September 29. Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels. We celebrate the feast of three archangels, Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the great heralds of salvation and defenders against the power of evil. St. Michael is guardian and protector of the Church, from its roots in Israel to the Church of today and beyond. In Hebrew, his name means who is like God. St. Gabriel, whose name means hero of God, announces that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth and Zechariah. He is entrusted with the most important task of revealing to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Then, there is St. Raphael, whose name is Hebrew for God has healed. He is named in Tobit 12 as the one standing in the presence of God, and in 1Enoch (early Jewish writing) as the healer of the earth (10:7). Friday, September 30. St. Jerome. St. Jerome is the patron saint of scholars and librarians. With a great love of learning, and books, as a monk and priest he developed a passion for the interpretation of Sacred 10

11 Scripture. With a comprehensive knowledge of classical languages, St. Jerome produced a Latin text of the entire Bible eventually known as the Vulgate. He wrote numerous commentaries on several books of the Bible, including a highly reputable work on the Gospel according to Matthew. St. Jerome joins three other saints (Ambrose, Augustine, and Gregory the Great) as the first Doctors of the Church. Saturday, October 1. St. Thérèse of Lisieux of the Child Jesus. St. Thérèse of Lisieux of the Child Jesus ( ), was a Carmelite nun. She is known as the Little Flower, was a spiritual athlete, but not in the same way as her contemporaries. Contrary to the spirituality of her time, which favored self-mortification and miraculous phenomena, she approached God through the ordinary. She is patron saint of the missions and a Doctor of the Church. Her book The Story of a Soul, was written at the request of her Mother Superior and is a sort of diary which tells the story of her little way. The Ride Home This feature is for families to share their thoughts as they travel to and from Church.
