3 Father Marty Hall E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Making Progress A little over a week ago I gave up my left knee for Lent and had a knee replacement. I m grateful to Father Joe and Father Innocent for covering for me while I m recovering from the surgery and thank you to Bishop Murphy for visiting each weekend to celebrate a Mass with us. Thanks to everyone who has sent notes, s, selfies at church, soup, cake, and other goodies. During the week ahead I continue in-house rehab, and if all goes well the staples will be removed next Friday. After that the more strenuous rehabilitation will begin. I ll be offering that up for all those who need extra prayers. I ll keep everyone up to date on the parish website and for those want to know what they can do to help my recovery, I ll post any needs online, but most of all, would you come to church and bring someone else during these Lenten Sundays? That means the most to me. We were sad to hear of the death of Father Marty Hall who served our parish and our diocese prior to his retirement. Here is the write-up the Diocese of Rockville Centre published about his life of service: Father Hall grew up in Brooklyn, one of three sons of Walter and Grace Hall, who were both deaf. Ordained June 7, 1952, for the Diocese of Brooklyn, he served the first two years of his priesthood at Holy Child Jesus, Richmond Hill, and St. Raphael s, Long Island City. Informally, though, he quickly began ministry to people who were deaf. One of the first things I did was prepare a deaf boy for his first Communion, Father Hall said. Opportunities for ministry to people who were blind also presented themselves. Jesus reached out to the forgotten, Father Hall said in an interview with the Long Island Catholic newspaper in 2012 on the 60 th anniversary of his ordination. Who is more forgotten that the deaf and the blind? In 1954, he was transferred to St. Thomas the Apostle, West Hempstead, continuing to minister to the deaf and blind on weekends. When the Diocese of Rockville Centre was created in 1957, Father Hall became a priest of the new diocese. That year he was appointed to the additional duties of director of the diocesan Apostolate to the Deaf and the Catholic Guild for the Blind, where he served until 1963, when he became associate director of diocesan Catholic Charities special services division. Father Hall returned to parish work in 1967 as associate pastor of St. William the Abbot, Seaford, serving until He then took a leave of absence to pursue a master s degree in educational psychology from New York University. After serving briefly at St. Peter the Apostle in Islip Terrace, Father Hall was assigned to Notre Dame, New Hyde Park, in In 1988 he was assigned to St. Bernard s Church, Levittown, where he was involved in religious education, chaplaincy for the Knights of Columbus, and other parish ministry in addition to his work with the deaf. He retired from parish work in 1996 but remained active with the deaf community for many years. Father Marty s funeral was celebrated on Saturday morning. 3

10 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT February 25, 2018 The Collect shows us the way to see God. God has commanded us to listen to the Word of his Son. We pray that, fed by his divine Word, our sight may be made pure so that we too may behold your glory. It clearly connects with the Gospel reading of the Transfiguration. The imagery in the prayer all but puts us in the Transfiguration scene. First Reading: The story of the near sacrifice of Isaac is one of the most gripping and disturbing of the many stories related to the covenant in the Book of Genesis. It is worth noting what God does not ask, in the end, of Abraham, rather than focusing on his initial request. Ours is not a capricious God putting humanity to terrifying tests, although the test does reveal the extraordinary willingness of Abraham to listen to God. Scholars suggest that this startling story points to the fact that Abraham s God is one that does not demand human sacrifice for appeasement, as do the gods of the many neighboring cults of the time. Responsorial Psalm 116: Like Abraham, like the psalmist, we are called to surrender ourselves to God in the manner of a servant. God in turn cherishes each one of us. Second Reading: To close his observations on what it means to live life in God s Spirit, Paul speaks to what having God with us looks like. One with Christ, we can count on God s presence and fidelity. While there may be those who try to condemn, they cannot succeed, because Christ is our intercessor. Gospel: Peter, James, and John accompany Jesus up the mountain, where they experience him transfigured. They see his glory revealed in the company of the great prophets and representatives of the law of Israel, Moses and Elijah. In his terror, Peter resorts to the practical: Perhaps they should contain the moment by erecting dwellings for the three. God names Jesus as his beloved Son, echoing the proclamation made in the first chapter of Mark at the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan. Jesus exhorts his companions to keep the experience a secret, a theme that weaves throughout the Gospel according to Mark when Jesus identity comes into question. Exodus 20:1-17; 1 Corinthians 1:22-25; Psalm 19:8-11; John 2: Daily readings can be found online at: Freedom of Speech & Freedom of Thought Wins - for now: Bakersfield, CA: In what has become a familiar story, cake-artist, Cathy Miller, was sued by a samesex couple when she declined to create a cake for their wedding because her faith "will not allow me to participate in things that I feel are wrong." In his court ruling, Superior Court Judge David Lampe rejected the argument that personal offense trumps conscience. "The State asks this court to compel (Cathy) Miller to use her talents to design and create cake she has not yet conceived with the knowledge that her work will be displayed to celebrate a marital union her religion forbids... Such an order would be the stuff of tyranny." This ruling by Judge Lampe is only temporary. The full case comes to trial in June. "Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freedom of speech." Benjamin Franklin Action Steps: Pray that Americans will value liberty and practice respect/tolerance for opposing views.
